In manual mode, you can change gear by hand using gearshift controls on the steering wheel.

Today on a long motorway run I kept noticing that the Auto Tip was hanging around in third gear when I was doing 70 - ready for me to boot it - but I had no intention of doing that and I kept switching to manual to put it back in 5th gear....not sure why it was doing this...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Tiptronic S
The Tiptronic S is an upgrade to the original Tiptronic, with the ability to adapt to driver's behaviour, and also allows driver to change gears without entering manual mode. In manual mode, if there is no manual input for a period of eight seconds, the system reverts to automatic mode.It was used as early as 2000 Porsche Boxster.
In the Porsche Cayenne, the Tiptronic S was upgraded to six-speed.
In the Porsche 911 (997) Turbo, the Tiptronic S model has faster acceleration over manual counterpart.
It came from the 993. When it was fitted with steering wheel switches it became Tiptronic S. Prior to that, it was plain old Tiptronic.
Tip S was an option on early 993s, but became standard in 1995 IIRC.
Doesn't answer your question though. Steering? Switches? You know how imaginative German engineers can be!

Nice marketing!
F1 indeed :floor:
I have an advanced ceramic high-temperature liquid recepticle similar to ones found in the F1 development centres around the world.
Did Tiptronic-S introduce Sport mode?
Porsche Glossary Info....
"The versatile Tiptronic S transmission system combines fully automatic five-speed operation with the option of manual control.
In manual mode, you can change gear by hand using gearshift controls on the steering wheel. Simply press up to change up, and down to change down. The system responds to every input with virtually no interruption in drive.
In automatic mode, Tiptronic S can choose from a range of shift points for every gear. The standard gearshift pattern, designed for maximum fuel economy, can be steplessly varied up to a dedicated 'Sport' configuration for optimum high-performance driving. Each gearshift point is auto-matically selected based on current driving style and road conditions. Within a short space of time, you'll develop a feel for the system and begin to influence gearshifts using the throttle alone.
The benefits of Tiptronic S are particularly apparent when exploring the car's potential. Even in automatic, the rapid gearshift action enables remarkable agility under acceleration. The immediacy of response can even be compared with that of a Porsche manual gearbox.
While still in automatic, you can change gear by hand using the rocker controls on the steering wheel. This function is particularly useful when performing an overtaking manoeuvre. If there is no manual input for a period of 8 seconds, the system reverts to automatic mode.
In addition to the above, Tiptronic S offers the following useful functions: When the car is started, a warm-up programme increases the engine's rpm to bring the catalytic converters up to temperature.
If the car is driven assertively, the system automatically selects the 'Sport' gearshift pattern without any need to use the kickdown. Unlike conventional automatic transmissions, Tiptronic S will not perform an upshift before entering a corner, only to shift down again on exit because the speed has dropped off. Acceleration out of corners is therefore smooth and uninterrupted. Mid-corner gearshifts are also prevented, thereby enhancing stability and safety.
Under heavy braking, the system shifts down to use engine braking to slow the car. An incline sensor improves uphill acceleration and makes better use of engine braking on descent. If traction is lost under braking in the wet, the system automatically changes up to restore lateral grip and bring the car back into line."
Thank you all for the info much appreciated it's all clever stuff very interesting, I've been quite happy driving in auto but need to use the steering wheel controls to get the hang of it especially knowing it wont let you mess up!
Cheers George
Careful, it won't stop you from messing things up but it will help you not to.
The beauty of a tip in manual is it will change up for you if it gets close to
the rpm red line and if you slow right down it will down change for you.
Put it in manual and have a bit of fun with it.

mine does the exact opposite to this and always wizzes up to fifth (at anything above about 40mph)and stays there until quite alot of throttle is applied and then will kick down to third or fourth depending on the speed and speed i push the pedal, i think you must have been driving quite on/off with the throttle previosly as the system does adapt to your driving style, or you might have a fault? i dont know if this is the case but i have never had to second guess the auto mapping and change up! only down or to hold a gear when i want to and prevent the system changeing up before a corner.
