I am planning on picking up my Cayman S next week and was told that the dealership can install satellite radio as it does not come with the Cayman S. Has anyone had a dealer install it and what was the cost? In addition, where do they place the antenna, unit, and if you have any pictures I would greatly appreciate it.
I thank you in advance.
Jeff
No pics but I had XM installed with Ipod connector and bluetooth phone on my 08 CS--thru the dealershp--they charged 2300 US --I fet that was a bit high as I didnt have the 6CD changer ever installed (they need to remove that as that is how the Ipod is recognized)--the antenna is part of the front window--no attachements were added except the microphone for the phone up by the sun visor....I Love the setup and it was done very neatly with no signs of damage to the cocoa leather.
I had my local dealer install it after I bought the car. They charged me about $540 for everything. They installed an XM Commander MT unit just forward of the shifter below the ACC. They connected the XM unit through the head unit by tapping into the FM antenna. Now I just tune to an FM station and I can hear the satellite radio. Originally, they installed the antenna on the dashboard, but I moved it since I had major issues with signal dropouts. Now the antenna sits neatly on the plastic cowl between the wiper arms. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.
XM Install
You can put in an XM unit from the Cayanne. It may require a PWIS calibration from the dealer, but mine works almost flawlessly. When on occasion it has a problem a simple off- on again brings it up. It is fully integrated with the nav screen. The antenna is typically mounted under the right side wiper cover panel. The windsheld antenna has nothing to do with XM reception. Cost depends on independent installer or Dealer. If you are in So Cal try

Well, I dont have PCM, so I went the aftermarket route (it was also less expensive than retrofitting PCM). Many others, myself included, have had reception problems with the antenna mounted inside the vehicle. Maybe you are fortunate enough to travel in areas where the line of sight to the antenna is not interrupted by the terrain. Anyway, here are the photos of my installation.
Nice installation job. I like it a lot.
Gonzo,
the cowl just to the right of your antenna pops out, and you can place the antenna underneath it. Shouldn't have any signal problems. The factory nav antenna is there. Several members (including myself) have placed their XM antenna there as well.
Nope. Does not work well there at all in my car, although YMMV.
It does work very well in the city, likely because there are actual terrestrial antennas there, and sat reception is not used. But once you go out onto the open road, its problem city.
As I posted in another thread, when the car was headed east bound (round trip to Parade and back) in eastern New Mexico, West Texas, and Oklahoma, reception was quite good. But on my return trip with the car headed west, it was completely un-usable.
I have tried a position to the immediate right of the air filter, and lastly on top of what is said to be the nav antenna shelf. Both are fine in the city, but unacceptable on the open road, depending on the terrain and direction of travel.
BTW, I too am using the XM Commander, mounted in the same spot as Gonzo.
My next trick will be to try his antenna location.

XM Radio install
I have been searching the thread but couldn't find an exact answer, maybe someone out there does. I have a new DE1 but without the PCM. I am missing my XM radio (specifically for NHL hockey) and am unsure of which way to go; either retrofit a PCM module (will the new Cayenne with XM radio fit?) or separate XM unit install. Any and all suggestions welcome.
Thanks
My2cents-- If you plan to keep the car put in nav, add a cayenne XM unit and maybe a Tookie Bluetooth hands free phone kit. ---ENJOY
I had the same receiver posted in the same location (see Gonzo's picture above). It looks almost factory-installed. I set the display to show a black background with white font to match the instrument panel. The dealer used a local high-end car audio store to do the actual install. I negotiated getting XM installed as part of the the purchase so I don't know exactly how much it ultimately cost - the dealer had been telling me around $750. The installer took off the dash and installed the antenna on the underside of the dash, near the windshield. I've had a few dropouts around my house but I live in a fairly heavily wooded area. I sometimes get dropouts under larger overpasses but it doesn't bother me enough to move the antenna.
