Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

The trouble i'm having is understanding all the models, i've been researching on here, looking for ones for sale on autotrader and piston heads and also researching wikipedia but have still not got a proper knowlege on how the models work
Hello everybody, my name is grant and i'm wanting to move into 996 ownership :bye: :bye: So I hope this will be my new friendly forum.
I currently have an escort cosworth that I have for sale at the moment, once that sells i want to get a 996.
The trouble i'm having is understanding all the models, i've been researching on here, looking for ones for sale on autotrader and piston heads and also researching wikipedia but have still not got a proper knowlege on how the models work
Carrera - is this the entry as well as everymodel.
C2- does this mean carrera 2wd
Carrera 2 - is this different from above or is above just the shortened version.
C4 - 4wd?
Carrera 4 - as above?
c2s - is this a wide body or is it only the c4s???
Damm the models are confusing, :?
Are the 3.6 models any better than the 3.4?
I have £13 - £15k to spend, low I know but I have seen a few in this range.
Colud somebody recomend me the best model for that sort of money.
Thank you ever so much in advance and for reading all this nonsence
Sorry.
Here is the said cosworth that i'm selling to make way for my new arrival 8)
Hi mate i also came from a escort cosworth and got my self a 996 there great cars and you wont regret it :thumb:
im sure someone will be along soon to tell you the diffrence in the models as its a great site :thumb:
I wise man once told me to always get the car with the lowest miles and do not focus on the age.
Given the budget then you may want to go for a low mileage, early model Carrera but the miles may still end up being high which could cost more in the long run...
Essentially there are 2 different engines(excluding turbo) between early model and late model 996. The Carrera and C4S Sport have the same displacement, just the trim and 4WD option. Parkers is a good place to compare specs.
I think once you drive a few you will realise the world of difference between the Cossie and the Porsche. A world you may never look back from...
Love the Cossie, looks very clean.
Good Luck and Have Fun!
Hi mate
I've just bought my first ever porsche, a 996 turbo, but I've got a good understanding the other models in the range too.
So - comments on your findings so far....
Carrera - is this the entry model? Yes.
C2- does this mean carrera 2wd? Yes.
Carrera 2 - is this different from above or is above just the shortened version? Just shortened as you say
C4 - 4wd? Yes
Carrera 4 - as above? Yes
c2s - is this a wide body or is it only the c4s??? This model doesn't exist in 996 form, only 997.
In addtion there is;
C4S - (Carrera 4S) - this is a widebody version of the carrera 4, but has more beef underneath in the area of brakes, suspension etc. It's basically a turbo without the turbochargers, intercoolers, side intakes behind the doors and rear spoiler. This model is only in 3.6L form.
Below cars are £28k+
Turbo / Turbo S - 420hp/450hp respectivley - tell me if you want more info
GT3 Mk1 / GT3 Mk2 - GT1 engine block, naturally aspirated road rocket - again, just say if you want more info
GT2
GT3RS
So - in a word, 'choice'.
I suspect for your budget you're looking at a C2 or C4 - probably a 3.4L pre-facelift model.
2002 was the major facelift year when the headlights and front end got restyled to look the same as the turbo model. Pre-2002 Carrera models do sell for less than post-2002 models. 2002 was also the year when the engine went from 3.4l to 3.6l. They made the engine capacity bigger by increasing the stroke length, not the bore, so pistons/block/heads all the same as far as I know.
One other thing to consider is Manual or Tiptronic. Don't automatically discount the Tip option - it's not your regular autobox, it really is a diamond... I have a Tip in my turbo and it's ace.
Enjoy the search - it's great fun!
One other quick thought - if your budget is limited you may well want to consider a Tip - as you won't have a clutch to worry about budgeting for replacing, plus you know the engine won't have ever been over-revved etc.
Tips are generally driven slightly easier than Manuals, but that is my own view.
C2 are the quickest because they are lighter and don't have the transmission losses of the 4WD. There's not a lot in it to be honest though. Marginally more 'boot' space too.
Tiptronic (semi auto) are Marmite here. Some swear by them, some wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.
The 3.4 engine was more troublesome than the 3.6, but the ones you are looking at are probably past the stage where the trouble would have happened if it was going to.
If you like not having a roof then the Cabrio seem to fetch a little less than the roofed cars like-for-like so you might get a newer / lower mileage one.
Targas are very much heavier, but have a usable rear hatch if you need to load lots of stuff onto the back seat.
Unpopular colours and unpopular paint/interior combos always fetch less, but then again when you come to sell it...
HTH
(Good choice by the way - you will find it soooooo much better than the Ford. There is no comparison.)
Gents, I love the pictures of the Cossies coming from an early Ford RS2000, Mexico background as well.........
The one thing you definitly need to concider before you buy is to have a PPI carried out on the car
before you buy
as I learnt from a bad experience.
I've had my 2003 3.6L C2 now for just over a month and can't stop grinning when I'm in it as well as when I look at it
Another thing I'd try to make sure was fitted on the car you buy is the PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust) as the sound you get from it is truly amazing
Good luck in your search and make sure you use the expertise of the members on here as I've found them invaluable.
Hi and welcome to the forum. Here are the models:
All 'cooking' versions of the 996 911 are called Carrera (denoted by 'C'). The post 2002 facelift models are all 3.6L and include:
C2 (RWD) - available as Coupe or Cabriolet ('Entry model')
C4 (AWD) - available as Coupe or Cabriolet
C4S (AWD) - Wide Body, available as Coupe or Cabriolet
C2 Anniversary (RWD) - available as Coupe only (slightly more performance than the cooking models as it had the optional PowerKit fitted as standard which included a 345bhp output).
The non-Carrera models are listed below and all of these are the performance models (except the Targa which is a 'cooking' model - albeit the world's fastest hatchback  ):
Targa (RWD)
Turbo (AWD) - Wide Body, available as Coupe or Cabriolet
Turbo S (AWD) - Wide Body, available as Coupe or Cabriolet
GT3 (RWD) - Coupe only
GT3 RS (RWD) - Coupe only
GT2 (RWD) - Wide Body, Coupe only
The pre-facelift (ie. pre-2002) models have the 3.4L engine and are limited to:
C2 (RWD) - available as Coupe or Cabriolet ('Entry model')
C4 (AWD) - available as Coupe or Cabriolet
C2 Millenium Edition (RWD) - Coupe only
C4 Millenium Edition (AWD) - Coupe only
GT3 (RWD) - Coupe only
Turbo (AWD) - Coupe only (This model always had the 3.6L engine and external face-lift from inception).
Still as clear as mud?

That's a helpful list.
One thing though, what distinguishes the Millennium model from its counterparts?
:?:
Being a Ford man the OP may assume this means they are painted bright yellow.
Thanks :thumb:
The Millennium models are mechanically exactly the same as their respective C2 & C4 models. They are marked out by their cosmetic differences and higher levels of standard equipment. They were only manufactured in 2000 and include a special 'chromaflair' metallic paint finish, chrome finish 17" alloys, PCM1, CD player, Savannah leather interior amongst a few other bits and pieces.
