Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Quite right - that's why I never mentioned it was the only oil to buy.
Leading evidence: 'only oil' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only oil' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend i' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I use Motul 8100 5w40 for all of the reasons above and more - mostly because it is a pre-SM specification oil, and so contains proven anti-wear additives.

There's another regular that goes to the same indi who has a 996 that he uses exclusively for track days and he has only ever used the same oil.

Paragon used Shell Helix in mine when it was serviced there.

I have just done my own service and used Castrol 10w60, mines a 01 turbo and a lot of people have recommended I use it!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My indi puts Castrol GTX Magnatec in mine - and has done for the last 5 years with no problems. There's another regular that goes to the same indi who has a 996 that he uses exclusively for track days and he has only ever used the same oil.
If it works for him then it will certainly work for me!
There's a lot of oil-snobbery around if you ask me - a bit like wine buffs! I would stay away from Mobil 1. It's a 0/40 oil which is just too thin for the climate that we live in (UK). That stuff is thin enough when it's cold - it's literally like water when it's up to working temperature. My engine sounded audibly quieter when I changed to the GTX, it sounded like the engine was almost 'dry' with the Mobil 1!
Adrian.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Mobil 1 isn't simply 0W-40 full stop. There are a range of viscosity indexes available to the buyer suitable for different ambient temperatures.
I know of an indy who uses Esso Ultron - it's approved by Porsche. Porsche publicise a list of all approved oil brands. A search on the 'net' will find you the list.
Be wary using too low a viscosity oil, remember the M96 engines have a tendancy to leak from the RMS.
Finally, 0W-40 and 10W-40 oils should be the same viscosity when hot.
Yeah, you're right. Mobil 1 do a range of oils - they even do one for diesels. Doesn't make it the only oil to buy just 'cos Porsche say so though, does it?
If you ask me there are far more superior oils for sale than Mobil 1 out there at cheaper prices too. People only refer to Mobil 1 on Porsche forums because they've "got the contract" with Porsche - and that's why you've probably got a big "Porsche only recommends Mobil 1 oil" sticker under your engine cover and almost certainly why they show a picture of a 911 Turbo in their ads when they advertise Mobil 1. They're getting massive trade from being associated with Porsche - they must be chuffed!
Quite right - that's why I never mentioned it was the only oil to buy. In fact, I've illustrated the point that an indy I know uses Esso Ultron.
The list of Porsche Approved Oils doesn't revolve solely around Mobil.
I believe my indi (paragon) used Mobil 1 05W-40 in my MY00 car last time the oil was changed.
Said it was slightly thicker & more suitable for an older engine.
Paragon used Shell Helix in mine when it was serviced there. I am now on Mobil1 15W50 - thicker oil for older high performance engines if you read the Mobil site.
Having done some 'research' I would be more than happy with Castrol Magnatec - or even the Texaco/Havoline fully synthetic that CostCo sell in 20L drums for ~£50 if the oil is dropped regularly :thumb:
It's a bit like jeans - George at Asda do a pair for less than a tenner or you can go to Armani and pay £100+ Same function :floor:
I use Motul 8100 5w40 for all of the reasons above and more - mostly because it is a pre-SM specification oil, and so contains proven anti-wear additives.
You can even buy it in a big drum :thumb:
I have just done my own service and used Castrol 10w60, mines a 01 turbo and a lot of people have recommended I use it! Seems fine and noticeably quieter than 0w40 that was in.
Maybe OK for a 993 but I don't think that Paragon would entertain putting 15W50 into a 996. The 996 engine range use hydraulic lifters. If the engine oil at start-up is too thick (high viscosity level) it will not be delivered in sufficient quantity for component lubrication or cooling requirements and the hydraulic chain tensioning may suffer as well. Oil pumps in all 996 engine types are driven by the intermediate shaft. The harder the oil pump wofks the higher the loads applied to the intermediate shaft. Its a vicious circle. This is one of the reasons that Porsche have never appoved any oil grade other than 0W40 or 5W40. Make of oil is not such a big issue but grade of oil for the 996 range of engines is.
