Stick with what your Indie is using Magnatec - suited to older engines.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My car's telling me that it needs a top up of oil. If it's at the bottom of the indicator, how much oil do I need to put in to return it to normal levels?
I've checked and my indie uses Castrol Magnatec 10/40w, so I'll be putting the same in. Does anyone know a cheap supplier? I read somewhere that Costco sell one kind of oil cheap, and even Tescos are quite reasonable.
The difference between the top and bottom mark of the digital bar chart display is 1.5 litres. You really should aim to top up when no more than two bars have disappeared. Obviously if you drop below the MINIMUM graduation you can/will damage the engine. Also, I wouldn't consider 1.5 litres a "top-up" - you would be doing almost 20% of an oil change
The bars are 250ml each (prefacelift 3.4)
The bars are 200ml each (facelift 3.6)
The flat sixes are "fragile" enough, don't tempt fate with lazy lubrication.
You should only use fully synthetic.
The Porsche flat six is a strange beast, and you should pay attention to the approved oils.
There are over 100 approved varieties from over 30 different oil companies - so there is no vested interest in a "favoured" manufacturer, just a pre-defined spec best designed for the 996.

Plenty of discussions/opinions over oil type and grades.
Stick with what your Indie is using Magnatec - suited to older engines. And its sold nearly everywhere - cheap as chips (even at Halfords) :thumb:
Thanks for the tips guys. I park on a very uneven surface, so I've learned from past experiences that my electronic sensor isn't really to be trusted. After parking the car on a level surface and taking another reading (both from the dipstick and the electronic metre) the oil wasn't quite as low as I first thought. Still, I take your point GT4 - and topped it right up, I'll also be keeping a closer eye on her in future.
Oh, and if anyone's interested, the Castrol oil was £30 for 8L in Costco.
