Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Car is at the dealer right now for 30k check up, and I got a call saying the license plate lights are out - he thinks they just need to be plugged back in to the socket, and that nothing is wrong with the actual assembly. Its $125 labor to remove the back bumper and "plug them in". Any comments/instructions on how difficult this would be for me to just do on my own next weekend? Experiences? Thanks all.

POST 2Original post

If that's truly what's wrong with it, then you can do it yourself. It should take a half hour or so.

POST 3Original post

I would tell them to plug them in for free as a good will gesture ... you just spent $800+.

POST 4Original post

Absurd! The bulb/socket assembly comes out the front of the bumper cover (no way do you need to remove the bumper cover). I just removed one of mine in about 30 seconds with a Phillips screwdriver. There is a rubber boot on the backside that once slipped off allows you to change the bulb or plug the wires back in. I think I would start looking for a new dealer!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Loren, Thanks for your reply. I won't have the car back for another week, but when I get it, I will try your suggestion. Is the rubber "boot" you refer to behind the license plate, or are you talking about the "bumperettes" on either side of the plate being removed? Thanks.

POST 6Original post

The license plate lights are directly above the license plate under the curve of the bumper cover. You don't need to remove anything to get to them. Once you take the two Phillips screws out, the socket with the rubber cover come out with it and they actually dangle by the wires. Slip the rubber boot off (towards the wires) to get to the bulb and wires. From the owners manual: <img src="http://web.dsldesigns.com/~ljcook/images/license%20plate%20lights.gif" alt=" - " />

Thanks Loren, I'll try it as soon as I get the car back...
