Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

2008 Cayman S , Manual, 39,500 miles, bone stock, all maintenance up to date, never wrecked, super clean. I have owned this car for a full year now and like it so much that i decided to keep it and play with it. I have researched many options and watched tons of videos. RENN, P9, PCA, etc. After much deliberation, I decided to roll the dice with a grand for the IPD comp kit now and then follow with Soul PP full exhaust and tune. Perhaps backwards from the ideal upgrade sequence but the IPD kit is a straight forward bolt on, not as much work or money as full exhaust swap. I bought the kit 3 weeks ago but just installed it last night. I moved slow and deliberate, triple checking everything. ZERO chance that I left something undone or did anything other than follow the directions. All of the connections are fully on, in place, and tight. The small vac line is plugged with the plastic bit and the longer vent hose is plugged with the aluminum bit. From the very first engine start (post-install) the engine is running horrible. Idles poorly, engine is missing, will not go above 30 mph, will not go above ~ 3,000 rpm. Even in neutral, mashing the throttle to the floor, only yields about 2800-3000 rpm. NOTE: Prior to kit installation (24 hrs before install), I pulled the engine cover and let the car cool down from the ride home from work. After 2 hours, pressured washed the top of the engine like i have done twice before. Generally not a big deal, just knock all the dust off with just plain water. Used a fan to help dry the engine for about an hour after and then locked it up tight for the night. Did not restart the car after the wash and before the kit install. In the past, would start the car within an hour after the engine wash to heat it up...help dry. I did not do that this time. It dried "naturally". Have no idea if this has anything to do with my current issue but wanted to mention it, Anyone with similar experiences? All comments, suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated. POST 2Original post

Just some thoughts...at the risk of sounding elementary. If no codes, I would again check all connections, vacuum, oil breathers, and electrical including at the MAF sensor as the installation of the plenum and TB moves everything around. I inadvertently pulled the vacuum line from the vacuum manifold side on the passenger side top of motor. Had to fish back through and reattach. Don't know how this affects running as I fixed the error before running the engine. If no change, I would reinstall the old plenum and TB to see if problem corrected. I have not read anything about faulty TB but have to believe there is room for error in the electronics or butterfly valve. I will tell you with all the mods in place running properly with a good tune, the car is another animal. Best of Luck

POST 3Original post

Sounds like maybe you missed to do a TB calibration? To perform this simple reset / recalibrate procedure of your TB follow the following 3 steps. 1. Turn key to the “ON” position (one click before engine starts) for 60 seconds. 2. After 60 seconds with the key still in the “ON” position depress throttle Pedal all the way down to floor once and release. 3. Turn key off and pull key out of ignition.

POST 4Original post

hallonz is SPOT ONZ! Please disregard my previous post. I completely forgot I had exactly the same issue after install and major reinspection. Follow the steps; new car. I am sorry for the misinformation in the earlier post.

POST 5Original post

Just closing the loop on this thread. Thank you for posts, emails, and IMs on this topic. RESULT: The GT3 TB included in the IPD comp kit was DOA. Defective right out of the box. The most obvious sign/symptom was the inability to manually move the throttle plate. Greg at IPD was fantastic. One phone call and after about 5 mins, a new TB was on its way. Greg included a pre-addressed and pre-paid UPS label that i used to return the defective part. IMPRESSION: With the new part installed, the engine started right away. No CELs, no spit, no sputter, no cough, no wheez. That is the good news. Unfortunately, there was also: no difference. If I had not installed the part myself, I would not know the kit was installed. After 250 miles, no difference in acceleration, no difference in throttle response, no difference in sound. Not having access to a dyno, I decided to do a series of before and after rolling sprints. 2nd gear only, 20 mph per cruise control, full throttle to 65 mph per the speed limit gong on dash. Just using a stop watch measured 10 sprints each, before and after: Before 6.55s and (250 miles) After 6.51s. 4/100th of a second should be well within any margin of error for this sort of test. Frustrated by lack of progress, I pulled the engine cover and went back over every detail of the simple install. I also did a DME reset by way of battery disconnect. I also used Durametric to look for any codes or anomalies that might be suspect, none found. NOTE: 2008 Cayman S , bone stock, 40,000 miles with recent major service performed. My car does not have PSAM, PSE, or Sport Chrono. 6sp manual. I must make a quick decision to keep or return the kit. I am a little outside the 30 day window but feel like Greg would be fair since the time I lost dealing with DOA TB unit. I do plan on eventually replacing headers and exhaust. Comments, suggestions, and advice all appreciated. Ron Milliet Long Beach MS

POST 6Original post

If the engine only needs 800cfm or whatever, going from a throttle body that will flow ~900cfm to one that will flow 1200cfm isn't going to force any more air in there. There is power to be gained by increasing the plenum volume, but it has to be pretty drastic. Like adding a couple *liters* to it. Once you get headers and the ECU tune it should wake up a bit.

POST 7Original post

Removed mine. Frustrating... - Magnaflow headers w/cats - Tubi cat back - APR tune - desnork Chased somewhat rough idle and seemingly random various exhaust codes even after reinstalling a couple times. Changed MAFs, replaced O2 pre and post, cleaned and carefully sealed everything. Multiple air filter replacements (OEM). The TB worked fine, no leaks (carb cleaner checked). Did learning sequence many times. Rebuilt exhaust, confirmed no leaks at header manifold gasket. Replaced AOS. Checked torque on intake manifold runners, confirmed flapper valve movement. Short Term Fuel consistently reporting lean conditions (~ 5%) on bank 1 and 2 (~ 2%). And although those are minor variances within range, still bothered me. Returned to stock, no issues, STFT at 0 or -1, steady idle, mid range torque returned. To their credit the IPD setup felt stronger over 6k but I was tired of looking for the ghost in the machine affecting the overall system and my DD style likes the mid range torque. POST 8Original post

This particular mod is one that just baffles me in that its still one of the most popular modifications despite so much empirical evidence that it is nothing but useless snake oil. I have yet to see one single dyno from anyone (other than the guys trying to sell it to you) that shows anything other than a zero to couple HP gain above 6K, and in many cases the car actually loses power or torque. It's been years that people have been doing this mod on both the 987 and 981 and it's always the same result by those that actually dyno the car before and after, so you would think that after all these years and units sold that either A) there would be at least one person that could demonstrate empirical data from a dyno showing that it actually does anything to improve performance at all, or B) the word would be out by now considering all the data shows the exact opposite and people would quit wasting their time and money on this. One issue is many combine this mod with headers install or ECU tunes and then anecdotally sings its praises when the reality is what they are feeling is coming from the headers and tune alone and has nothing to do with the plenum change at all. Below is yet another recent quote directly from guys who do this sort of thing for a living when asked about plenum upgrades and once again its the exact same info and result as always.

POST 9Original post

So I have new info from the State of Washington, saying they are discontinuing the DEQ every two year testing requirement to get your licence tabs later this year, unless this get extended by the Department of Ecology. I recently had this inspection done in December 2018, so I am good to go with a cat less exhaust system from Fabspeed, Soul or Cargraphics. I have an Agency Power plenum, 82mm thottlebody, Evoms air cleaner and Milltec exhaust on my 3.4 motor. My question is with a ECU tune from FVD using a custom tune program to include these mods, can I get close to 308 RWHP @ 6000 RPM. Soul is asking me to be a test bed for their system if I go through all the hoops of before and after dyno testing. Is that HP realistic? The other question is which is very subjective, which exhaust system would give a smoother mid range torque/HP curve? Does the length of race tube headers make a HP or torque difference? If so, does it make sense to pay more for Cargraphics as their 987.1 headers look to be a couple of inches longer. They go forward, then bend back towards the rear much more than other headers supporting the notion of longer tubes. I can use all the mid range torque that this system will give me for my race applications. " style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: -webkit-standard;">

POST 10Original post

I have to add my $0.02 here. I have IPD products on all 4 of my Porsches, and each one we noticed a gain in performance. I'm thinking you didn't go far enough to realize the parts potential. For more air to get into the plenum you need to Desnorkle the car, add the evoms V flow filter, and reduce pressure on the back end. More air in + more air out = more power. You cant do JUST the plenum and expect butt dyno results, it wont happen. and actual dynos aren't worth crap on the 987/991 cars, the air intake depends on the air speed along the body to ram air into the intake. on a dyno its just sucking dead air.

POST 11Original post

I’ve got the Softronic GT3 plenum, Evoms intake, desnork, Softronic flash, and I guarantee my butt dyno feels those upgrades. I had a Carnewal modded exhaust but the noise was too much for my honey. I went to a stock Sport exhaust with Gert Carnewal’s ashtray switch kit. I also installed a Sprint Booster . The most significant sign of more power is “gettin rubber” between 1st and 2nd. No CELs. I would think something is wrong if you are getting CELs with a plenum/TB. I’m thinking about Magnaflow headers....

POST 12Original post

Did you do the GT exhaust mod through Cantrell? Was thinking about pulling the trigger on that but don't want something too obnoxious (which doesn't seem to be the case based on the majority of the feedback).

POST 13Original post

Yes I had a stock system I bought separately for the car and had that modified by Cantrell. The workmanship was excellent and it definitely added more power. The sound is great. But my wife is very sensitive to the noise so I removed the Carnewal, sold it and found a decent used Porsche Sport Exhast on eBay and set that up with a manual switch that Gert Carnwell sells. I still have my stock exhaust. I also added a Dream 2 dual tip. The dual tip is a true “dual exit” where the exhaust tee is converted to a true dual outlet, further uncorking the factory exhaust. The Dream 2 has a number of competing products now where the exhaust tee is replaced with two pipes.
