Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Or perhaps it was because I checked the "Getrag performance 6 speed" box on the order sheet?
Leading evidence: 'Check "getrag performance 6 speed" box' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check "getrag performance 6 speed" box' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. This is good news for those looking to change some gearing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Now that I have a
Cayman S
, I took a look at the gear ratios and final drive, and have noticed that since the
Boxster
6 speed, there are now a number of different gearsets and final drive ratios available for possible transplantation into a "short" gearbox...for instance the
Cayman S
has a final drive ratio of 3.88:1...my old
986
S had a final drive of 3.44:1, but with shorter gearsets from first through sixth...if the
986
S box is a Getrag unit like the
Cayman S
, then would it not be interesting to put a gearbox together with the shorter gears and the 3.88 final drive? Unless one of you guys comes back and tells me that it's already been investigated and can't be done, I plan on looking deeper into this...
I would be interested in what you find. Some of us have wondered about the CS gearing, which seems ... uh, "interesting" to say the least. The first two gear ratios are higher than in the '06 BS, which, in turn, are higher than in the 997. Some suspected that
Porsche
wanted to be sure that the CS wouldn't be nipping at the heels of the 997. A change in just the pinion gear (cheaper and easier) could lower all the gear ratios. That would also lower top speed a bit, but I never get to 6th on long track straights anyway.
Jim, the
Cayman
has the lowest final drive ratio of all the mid-engine gearboxes (
986
/987) at 3.88:1...except for the original
Boxster
five speed, which is a 3.89:1 ring & pinion...from what I've been able to dig up, the best gears would be the
986
S gears with either the 3.88 or the 3.89 (if it would work) final drive...
I haven't looked at any
911
ratios, and I don't know what might be interchangable with our gearboxes...
I'm quite willing to give up some top speed for better acceleration, but it would also mean 6th gear highway cruising at higher rpm, which I wouldn't want.
So far, my investigation has turned up that the
986
/987 six speeds are the same, so the gears should be interchangeable...Paul Guard of Guard Transmissions said that the 996/997 boxes are very similar, so the internals should interchange...my plan would be to get a
986
S box and transplant a
Cayman S
3.88:1 ring & pinion...
I need to check out the 996 gearboxes for possible additional ratios...I'll post some numbers soon...
Uhh, Jhellow...if you look on the photos of K-Man's car being fited with his Quaife, you'll see in large friendly letters, the name Getrag cast into the side cover...I used to think the 987's had
Aisin
boxes, but when I crawled under mine and looked, it said Getrag, just like K-Man's...all of the
986
/987 and 996/997 six speed gearboxes are Getrag G50's...
I stand corrected. I was told early on at my dealer that these were getting Aisins. I did not notice the big Getrag stamping on Ken's photos. How unobservant of me!
One of my favorite trannies was a 4-speed Getrag in a 79' 320i. Short shifts similar to the Cay with the factory SS kit.
Sorry for the misinformation. This is good news for those looking to change some gearing.
