Suggestion

I find that the best technique is again to use a smooth application of throttle from 1500 while releasing the clutch out and flooring it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just curious as what the best launch technique is for a 996C2... I tried from 4,000 rpm and there is tons of axle hop... not the best thing for this car... I know the 996 isnt' a dragster but what rpm do you launch it at... (wheelspin or no wheelspin).. cheers Pete <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

POST 2Original post

Axle hop?? Wow. If I over-rev, I get a sick sweet smell of burnt clutch. Mine's a C4S, so it miay be different. I usually go up to 2500, let the clutch bite, then quickly without droppping release the clutch followed quickly with WOT. That clutch bite and micro-second hesitation with the gas seems to keep that smell at bay and give me a satisfying tire chirp. Wish I could say it was an all 4 tire chirp, which would be cool, but it's just the rear. I don't do the launches often, since, as you say, the P car is not a dragster and I just don't think it's worth burning the clutch to prove otherwise. There may be others with better technique.

POST 3Original post

Why abuse the car like that? just properly modulate the throttle and you can launch it just fine with a c2 by going at 1500 or less- otherwise you are just EATING you clutch for sure

POST 4Original post

My. $.02 1. Left foot on brake 2. Put selection in "M" 2A.Press steering wheel button to engage "1" 3. Rev up to 4500 rips 4. Remove foot from brake 4A.Press accelerator to floor 5. Do not lift while pressing "+" button at appropriate RPMs.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ok, I hear ya... I didn't think the 6-speed cars where meant to do burnouts... yah I KNOW the clutch smell very well... I was just curious cause I couldn't get a smooth launch like my other sports cars... corvette, mr2turbo... how much is a new clutch on these cars anyways? installed and alll thx Pete

POST 6Original post

A new clutch is not cheap a friend just did one on his c4 and he paid 2400 after all was said and done, but I don't know if he got ripped or not. The clutch kit itself is about 450 if you look around for it. I find that the best technique is again to use a smooth application of throttle from 1500 while releasing the clutch out and flooring it. The technique is simular to many cars that have too much horsepower for the rear tires etc.(modulating the throttle on clutch release), even though the 996 depending on what size tires it has is difficult to brake loose without hurting things.

POST 7Original post

If this is something you just absolutely have to do, you may want to check back issues of Car & Driver and Road & Track. They have worked this out to get the best and most consistant starts. I forget which one, but one of the magazines published their procedure within the last year. Of course, they are using someone else's clutch, driveline, tires, etc. and that no doubt changes ones approach to the subject.
