The alarm system was never intended to operate with the top open, it used the same micro-switch in the windshield header to determine that the top was closed.

The red clip isn't intended for the alarm, it's design purpose is to disable the top from operating when you use the speedster hump and tonneau cover options.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I saw something on ebay and it's a OEM Porsche alarm clip for convertible. Do anybody know what is it for and how it works?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the photo. How does it work? Do you need any installation?

POST 6Original post

the clip tells the car that the top is in locked mode and activates the interior motion detector so if you stick your hand inside the car with the clip on it trips the alarm.

POST 8Original post

Do they have a 987 version, or does it work on both? Great idea. I don't leave the top down unless I'm at a resturant where I can keep an eye out, but that doesn't mean I can watch it every second.

POST 9Original post

Some people spray paint them black so they are hard to see when installed. I'm thinking that if anyone knows what the red clip does they will be more apt to see red than black. Hence, I left mine red!

POST 11Original post

Just snapped mine in place today. I could not leave my car with the top down without it.

POST 12Original post

OK, I have a question. I have one also and have yet to use it. With it in place, the interior ultra-sound motion detector is enabled with the top down. The clip also disables the top from raising. My question is; If the alarm is set and someone knows what the red clip is and they reach over and remove it, will the alarm go off? I know the detectors are under the latch assembly pointing down.

POST 13Original post

The answer is no, the alarm will not go off, unless the person accidenntally moves within the area of the sensors. The red clip isn't intended for the alarm, it's design purpose is to disable the top from operating when you use the speedster hump and tonneau cover options. The alarm system was never intended to operate with the top open, it used the same micro-switch in the windshield header to determine that the top was closed. The red clip only tricks it into thinking the top is closed, nothing more. The infrared motion sensors are not that sensitive, and even with the red clip in place, it's possible to slowly move your arm inside and remove something, plus, it's coverage area isn't complete, there are several blind spots. So you really should never leave any valuables inside.

POST 14Original post

LB's right on... lots of unarmed dead spots. Reaching into your center cubby holes or your dash to snag your GPS or radar detector will trigger the alarm. However, anything in the door pockets or rear storage compartment (above the engine) is unprotected. Same goes with your center windscreen or the rollbar inserts. All are at greater risk for theft when the top is left down and the clip is in use. Center console is wired to the system, so if it's opened the alarm will sound regardless of red clip use. Raising your windows with our without the red clip's use is a good idea for top down parking if you must do it. The red clip, BTW, was designed for owners of factory humps. The idea was to disable the top switch so one could not accidently to raise the top when the humps were installed. Factory humps came with the red clip and extras were sold through the parts department because they're easily misplaced.

POST 15Original post

As ineffective as it might be, I would consider it to be better than no red clip if you do decide to park with the top down.

POST 16Original post

Parking with the top down is only suggested if you can keep the car in site and carry a large calibre pistol.....

POST 17Original post

If you're a good shot, a .380 will do fine. Also, using a smaller caliber weapon will do less damage to your car if you're not a good shot. I do agree with the whole line of thinking though. In principle, you're spot on! After some fine upstanding citizen spat out his gum onto my brand new floor mat when the top was down one day when I ran into a grocery store, I no longer leave the top down anywhere out of my line of sight.

POST 18Original post

I do believe official factory procedure for the above infraction would be 8mm Lugar, multiple shots.
