I just windex the inside of the windows every time I clean the dusty inside of the windscreen, and try not to open the windows immediately after rain or a wash.

I rolled down the windows and cleaned the inside edge of the window seal with windex.

He went to another dealer (50 miles away) and they just changed a bad seal, under warranty.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had the same problem I took it to the dealer and they realigned the window and problem was solved.
The window streak problem is so annoying. Every time the car gets wet on the outside I get this streak on the inside. EVERY TIME. When I wash my car, when it rains. If kids throw water balloons at me. I get this stupid greasy streak that dries hard on the inside.
My Porsche Dealer has told me this is 'normal' and there is nothing they can do.
Amazing.
They said, if they open the door up and remove all the grease then the window won't operate properly. They tell me that's just the way it is.
Great.
I had the same problem. It only occurred after the car was very wet (almost always after a car wash - don't distinctly remember this happening after rain) and I rolled the window down. I got in the habit of not lowering the window until the car was well and truly dry.
Happens to me too...

I read that there are quite a few with the window streak, used to think glad I don't have it, being somewhat anal to say the least, well it's made it way over to my windows now......figured I'd get the same story that Hawc got with the dealer so I was half right, but I also could see me pissing them off saying it's not normal then kinda pushing to have them remove the excess grease/lube, then worrying that they not re-install the door panel properly or have the window not operate or sound right, just seems when things are tinkered with they are never the same than from the factory, what to do?
prolly live with it I guess......
I have the same problem (and have asked about it on forum before as well) - usually after carwash or hard rain if I lower the window before car dries out thoroughly. Trying Rain-X on the inside of the window sounds like an idea . . .
Mine does not streak. It did one or two times when they looked for the "Window Ghost" problem. I guess they just greased something in the mechanism. After a few days, all was well, no streaks were to be found.
Hmmm....
So I've read through this thread and all the other threads on this issue (including one started by me a long time ago) and
THERE IS NO FIX.
The responses range from:
1) Wow, doesn't happen to me
2) Happens to me and I live with it
3) Tried to get my dealer to fix it and they couldn't
Great. Well, unless someone can correct me and tell me to go to my dealer and tell them to do ___________ . I guess I'm screwed.
This and the rear trunk clunk, and the chirping rear quarter panel windows, and the slightly rocking drivers seat and lose underbody panel that rustles at over 100km/h are constant little annoyances in an otherwise brilliant car. Dissapointing.
Same here; and it gets worse as the inside rubber on the door wears out. One fix is to replace that rubber inserts, I cannot imagine them being expensive, but same thing will repeat eventually. And because it is a wear item, not covered under warranty.
Our 2005 Bimmer has the same issue.
I think you are overlooking the "easy" fix.... simply don't roll your windows up or down.
Aside from that the dealer CAN attempt to clean off some of the grease (if that is what is causing the streaking) on the window mechanism in the door. Sometimes that helps either stopping it altogether or significantly reducing the amount. If your dealer says they won't try doing that, then I would either complain to PCNA HQ or go to a different dealer who will at least look at the window mechanism and amount of grease on it.
Have them show you the cars at the dealership that have the same streaks. If it is normal, they all should have it.
Ask them what the purpose of the streaking is. To shade the passenger? Obscure occupants so as to confound the aim of car jackers' 9s?
Explain that since they seem to enjoy lying to you, that you would like to give them an opportunity to go hog wild and whip up some really good ones.
Is it actually the face of The Virgin Mary?
I had the same problem I took it to the dealer and they realigned the window and problem was solved. From what the tech told me that its a pain to align.
This is a great thread because I have this same issue. It is a pain in the but. I live in South FL and it rains almost every day in the summer. This means you have to wash your windows every other day. I may have to complain more next time I go to the dealer. You guys are not alone.
happens to me too and i also find it to be annoying.
for a week i kept the windows up, but since the windows open and close a little every time you open and clos the doors, the streaks still appeared at the bottom 1/4 inch of the window.
Definitely go to another dealer. A friend of mine had a problem with his A/C. The dealer near his house said that the condenser got hit by a rock and it wouldn't be covered under warranty. He went to another dealer (50 miles away) and they just changed a bad seal, under warranty.
I had this problem.. I rolled down the windows and cleaned the inside edge of the window seal with windex.
No more streaks.
I think maybe some wax, cosmoline, or grease at some point gets brushed up onto the window seal/flap and smears on the window.
just my opinion but i would agree with moose on this and give the seal a good degreasing or cleaning you may have to try various cleaners but I don't see the window coming in contact with anything except the seal as it move up and down. This should be an easy fix hawc, let us know how it turns out. Is it dfc or pfaff with the lousy service?
I've had two separate dealers take off the windows, clean down the inside and replace the windows, all under warranty. The problem is, eventually the smearing comes back. The bigger problem is, I've had the smear worked on two times, and the window re-allignment worked on subsequently four times, with one more to come.
They take the window off, put it back on, and it doesn't go high enough to seal shut. Deffinite massive increase of wind noise when driving, though obviously no sealing issues at all.
For all the hassle the window allignment has cost me, it's totally not worth it bothering with the smears. I just windex the inside of the windows every time I clean the dusty inside of the windscreen, and try not to open the windows immediately after rain or a wash.
frankly, I can live with smeared windows much better than I can with four evenings wasted waiting for some bloody idiotic mechanic to say "it's within tolerance", then look at me like nothings wrong when the "open door retraction" height of the window he just fixed is 7mm lower than the other window which doesn't make any noise whatsoever.
Have you tried using a warm damp (thin) towel to clean the rubber strip on the window? From the photos, the inside window seal appears to be what is doing the streaking. I am not in my car to see if this will work but lower your window and then clean the rubber strip (both sides top and bottom and inside and outside strips) with the warm damp towel. Dry the same way. If that doesn't work, try smashing a Qtip and running it between the inside window and the rubber strip. Did you perhaps put a rubber protectant on these strips to keep your window seals flexible?

The Techs at Hendrick Porsche
, in Charlotte, NC, could not even SEE the streaks on the glass when I had the car in for service. 'Talk about "Denial Issues"! There's no hope of finding a Dealer Fix, it seems.
Although I have yet to dismantle the door myself
, my (simple) theory is the interior surface of the door glass comes into contact with another material or surface inside the door while in the down position. Either a plastic weathersheild, rubber trim, or soundproofing material is saturated with a petroleum product that transfers to the glass surface when operated (up/down).
On a recent road trip, driving in heavy rain, I noticed the (previously clean) door glass "rolled up" wet as I pulled away from a toll booth. The milky water stain quickly dried as a thick, sticky film that requied a solvent (Windex) to remove.
The source of the contaminant
is obviously inside the door, and transferring to the same area of glass on both doors.
It's not Rocket Science, Folks.
Someone at Porsche
is smart enough to figure this one out.
Meanwhile, I am considering Exploratory Surgery on the passenger-side door (fewer electrics) to discover the root cause of this very aggravating symptom in an otherwise delightful sports car.
I'll have a camera crew following my every move, and post the findings here.
'Wish me luck!
