Hello Planet 9,
Entering my third week with my daily driven 05
Boxster
with 65k miles, and noticed something very concerning.
I have started to notice that under aggressive driving, a high rpm shift from 2nd to 3rd will almost always result in a quick little grind as the gear goes in. Does not happen at all under normal daily driving, only when into the 5+ rpm range when I decide to be reckless.
I've confirmed that it is not driver error, as the clutch can be firmly pressed to the floor and it still grinds. My fear is that the synchro mesh is worn and I'll just have to live with it and baby the
Boxster
all the time, which is not what I bought it for!
Can any of you share your experience and potential fixes? Also, if any of you have had to have synchros rebuilt, what were the costs?

Do you actually hear a grind or is it just a feeling with the shifter? A resistance going into gear like it doesn't want to go.
Could be other stuff - I don't think of a 2-3 syncro as one where you'd expect trouble.
Other possibilities : shifter cable adjustment; clutch master/slave; fluid. All these as much less expensive than tranny internals.
The first thing I would do is change the fluid. At 65K miles it is probably time if it hasn't been changed before or if you don't know what type of oil is inside..
Hi there,
Yes, I can hear and feel the grind as i enter 3rd. I find it strange that it only an UPSHIFT from 2nd to 3rd, and it doesn't make a sound from a hard downshift from 4th
Sounds like a plan, I'll just be gentle on her until it gets warmer and then i'll go to work. Any recommendation on Trans fluid?
According to the forum consensus MOBIL 112811 Synthetic Gear Oil, 75W-90 seems to be popular suitable choice. I got mine from ebay 57 bucks shipped.
I'd be checking the clutch hydraulics before changing the fluid. The trans fluid is supposed to last 120K (which admittedly is quite optimistic, but it gives you an idea of how little it wears out). And if the level were low enough to cause shifting problems you likely would've noticed the leak by now. Make sure the clutch is fully releasing.
If it was a clutch issue, then it would occur during every gear change, not just the 2-3 upshift at high RPM.
Changing the gear oil, checking the shifter cable adjustment, and checking the shifter play is the first step.
There are youtube videos on how to adjust the cables and how to check shifter play.
Good points guys. This is my first
Porsche
, and don't know how the shift is "supposed" to feel. I'd say entry into each gate is very firm and tight, and while there is some play it feels like it comes from the plastic shift knob (that I am dying to change for a weighted steel one).
I'll do some more research and let you know what i find. Hopefully the cable adjustment is not too difficult.
If I remember correctly yours was Base 5 spd. right? In this case checking the cables and shifter is not difficult - both cables are on the transmission passenger side and easily accessible. I think on the shifter there was an article either here or on Pelicnparts.
