Suspected cause
There is a very basic (no roll cage, no ceramics and no harnesses) lhd car for sale at EUR 200.000 in Germany - that is probably the lowest going rate for this car.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

A friend has just turned down 260k for his 4.0RS and 130K for his 6RS. The 991 is an awful cock up ( feel sorry for the owners ) Unless it's power train gains a LOT more credibility - ie 1000's of racing hours and not just hanging together at a few track days - demand for the Metz cars will become even stronger. Don't sell yours unless you have to.

An artificial market IMO, but a market all the same.. I would sell a 4.0RS at £260k and buy 2 7.2RS's + a 6RS (they are not all 130k)
Don't know but it won't be less than 260 that's for sure. Its a lovely black example with 5k on the clock.
I might just hang on to it and get a 7.2 RS to use. Although I really do think this crazy market will calm down and correct eventually.

500k. In what time scale - 20 years?
As substantial as a frothy cofeeee ...
When the speculators start to get their fingers burnt, the enthusiasts who drive their cars will discover where real values are.
Anybody remember mortgage rates at 15% per annum ?
I see some saying that because of the level of debt this could never happen again, and I believe it.
But 7% is not impossible.
And other asset classes may (easily) become tomorrow's best kept secret ...
I'd prefer to have the money tied up in one car rather than three, otherwise it is three cars to insure, tax, MOT, service, storage etc etc
The biggest problem is getting the insurers to agree to a value of £250k for one. I thought they had topped out last year at £200k, oh how wrong I was.
So how many RHD do you think are left in England? On 'How many left' it says 28 licensed in Q3 of 2013.
APOLO1 said:

I don't always agree with you, but I certainly wasn't one of the dissenters on that one. Less than 30 RHD UK cars and most if not all by now in the hands of people that don't need the money... Name your price territory sadly. I blame Porsche GB for not securing a sensible allocation in the first place. Far too many were built for the US...
Very few LHD examples showing up on the continent either - buy now or ignore forever I reckon. The GT2RS (built in the same numbers) seems far more abundant, so I would say that the market has spoken as to what the collector car will be.
If they are available for say £260k, and there are many who think they will go up £300k or more soon, why are these people not buying more of these cars.
Apolo1 seems to have plenty of money - has he squirrelled away a few already?
I would just drive them as it is a phenomenal car. The knowledge that you are not going to lose money is an added bonus. Happy motoring. There is a very basic (no roll cage, no ceramics and no harnesses) lhd car for sale at EUR 200.000 in Germany - that is probably the lowest going rate for this car. I also believe that lhd/rhd prices will even out eventually.

There still seems to be a lot of disparity with owners expectations and what the market is allowing for if the last few sales are anything to go by.
PS: glad to see your post was reigned in from the original drafting. Seemed rather unwarranted

The voice of reason.
Reason and indeed sanity, yes. However, the thing is, there are supposedly around 10-15 times as many 4 litre LHD cars as RHD. A third of the population of the planet lives in countries that have RHD... This might imply that market forces globally might inflate the value of UK specification cars rather more than left hookers...?

Interesting theory - but that has never happened before with any classic car.
In the normal world of collectable cars, the most "original" car is always the country of origin spec. Furthermore every Porsche driving enthusiast knows, that a lhd Porsche is better suited for the track (as any other lhd car for that matter as 99% of all tracks are driven clockwise). LHD and RHD prices tend to level out over time. In very few cases the difference is merely what it costs to convert the car from led to lhd or vise versa. Historically collector values have been driven by the american market and their desire for lhd cars. As a result lhd UK cars such as Astons carry a premium over their rhd equivalent.
If somebody thinks that RHD 4.0 prices are more than 200% higher than LHD prices then I can only suggest that the above lhd cars are bargains in the longer term.
PS: I don't know anything so don't read this as fact - purely speculation.

Some people with RHD cars are also probably talking up the market skywards.

The population figure is a bit misleading as that includes India who by and large so far anyway have not been big importers of cars. As far as I'm aware the big importers of RHD cars from the UK have been HK/Singapore/Australia total sum of population is... not very much let's just say... Japan?
Ultimately a pointless debate.
If you've got a RHD 4.0 then chances are you'd get a much bigger number for it than you would for a LHD one. That's just a fact. Same with 964 and 993 RS. I'm not talking up values, as I don't think there is a buyer on here at the levels where we are today. We all like a deal! But there are less erudite buyers out there who pay top money. If they don't reach the aspirations of current owners then no sale.....same with most 'in demand' cars at the moment.

Singapore; that's correct you cannot import a LHD car, also I think the car has to be less than 3 years old. Happy to be corrected on this as I may move there and I love my lowly 996 GT3 and would like to take it with me.

Really? Ok interesting. From what I understand it was very difficult to do so in lhd except for diplomatic plates or getting a mainland chinese plate which is not exactly easy either.

That's actually backwards, regarding track driving. RHD has historically been the default, hence why 99% of sports prototypes have been RHD. Just look into the cockpits of Porsches 917 and 962 to see this. Clockwise circuits have 360 degrees more right than left hand bend, so it is advantageous to put more weight on the right hand side of the car, and for the driver it gives the added benefit of better line of sight to the apex (at least in the days before massively intrusive A-pillars).
I always thought the preference for LHD 911s came from the less-compromised pedal layout, and in certain cases the option of a larger fuel tank.

sorry I was referring to RHD, I have sold plenty over the years over there......

[/quote]
That for me is the decisive fact between lhd/rhd Porsches . Im 6:4 and I simply cannot find a comfortable driving position in a (manual) RHD 911 as there is no room to put the left foot when coming off the clutch. On the lhd car you have the wheel arch to rest your food when not in use and you can stem yourself back into the seat (if you are not wearing a harness) whilst on the rhd space is compromised due to the wide centre tunnel.
On tracks it goes both ways. Some drivers actually prefer to sit on the outside of the car turning into the apex with a better line of sight. I think the ideal position is in the middle !

The 919 is LHD - as are GTE and Cup cars.
LHD > RHD.

LHD > RHD.
All factory racing 911s are LHD as far as I am aware, mostly because they are asymmetric and designed to be LHD from the onset with RHD being an adaptation. However, all Porsche prototypes made before the VAG takeover (everything up to the RS Spyder P2 car) were RHD. Other prototypes that you might not expect to be RHD include the Peugeot 905 and the BMW LMR. When it comes to the 911, LHD > RHD by design of the road car chassis. When it comes to prototypes, RHD > LHD
Does that mean that the mistake with the 919 is fatal? Unlikely - Audi have managed to win there with LHD enough times. I heard somewhere (I don't recall where) that they actually worked out that over a lap of LeMans (which is of course a pretty long lap) the benefit of RHD was less than a fifth of a second per lap, but they reckon that something about the pit work was easier with the driver on that side of the car and that was the justification for swallowing it.
Classic Pistonheads page....several topics covered - yes you can, no you can't - LHD>RHD, RHD>LHD etc etc.
I'm more confused than when I sat down 5 minutes ago with my first cup of coffee of the mornin'!
Keep up the good work, I love it!

It's got to be cheaper to get someone to print the venture shield.

As part of our investigations we noticed that your 4.0 stickers were none standard, as such we were unable to complete the fix on your issue under warranty. Please find enclosed

For what it's worth, the OEM decals are better quality than the aftermarket ones. I was working on a gen 1 RS with gen 2 decals a few months back and the difference in quality between those and my dad's 3.8RS was very noticeable. Depends how keen an eye you have I guess but the OEM once are extortionately priced admittedly!

Had a look at it when I popped the car in to JZM this morning for fettling. I'd forgotten quite how lovely your new toy was (last saw it when it was at Reading undergoing PDI). Just one thought - if you wanted decals that would complement the black accents and wheels, would you consider the 997.1 RS side decals? I reckon that might work quite well actually...

No....no....no
See above!!!
If I do do anything to it it'll be as per original. Ideally I'd like it with the decals and silver wheels, but it's quite a kerfuffle and a not insignificant amount of money.

Ex-factory for that car is as it currently sits though - black wheels, accents et al. If you go for retrofitting the standard decal pack then it surely won't work unless you also have not just the wheels, but also the turning vanes, wing end plates, lipstick and mirrors repainted silver. Is that part of the provisional plan? I haven't seen one in Mexico with all the silver stuff on it, but not that my opinion on the subject of your toy matters - my imagination reckons it is better as is...
The LHD and RHD prices seem to be converging for the 4.0s. This is a nice car but they make it sound as if it has the most desirable spec - which it has not.

Yes if it had those things it would be "complete with essential roll cage for track officionados, complemented by the all important harness and iron-hard bucket seats for the ultimate racing pedigree"
It has folding buckets, which are IMHO the seat of choice. Beyond that, I doubt that many people who were prepared to spend £275k on a car would be unduly put off by a further £4k to have a factory cage and harnesses installed it they were planning to take it on track. Objectively though - what proportion of the people buying these now will be looking to track them I wonder? Some certainly, but I strongly doubt that it will be the majority of prospective customers.
The biggest negative for me would be that they have gone for the red alcantara pack, of which I personally am not a fan. But again - at this price point it matters little indeed.

The red seats do look cheap. It is strange how the cars you see on eBay which have been "enhanced" in dubious taste get laughed at and when Porsche do it it's different.

I quite like the red alcantara seat inserts as it lightens up an otherwise all black interior - but then I am biased.

Would agree the red is quite a nice touch actually.. the red interior looks much better upfront than on pictures I find. (I have the boring all black one so I can't be said to be biased

Do you also have the red headliner though? That was where the red interior really went wrong for me but they don't all have that (also the hardest bit to swap out).
Did you spec it and if not, would you have done so if you had (without benefit of hindsight)?

Yes, I also have the red headliner, but to be honest i had to go into the garage to check as i couldn't remember so that tells you that it is not too intrusive. I did spec it at the time (ticked all the options - except telephone module) to be a bit different and would not change it a bit.

Fair enough - it isn't as if it is possible to make them bad - it is just preference at the end of the day. Personally I would have wanted paint to sample if I were ticking the boxes, but I guess launch colour is always safe and you wouldn't have had to wait until the end of the production run for it?

The LHD and RHD prices seem to be converging for the 4.0s.
Interesting... Are we seeing the price convergance towards the pricer RHD end or the 'cheaper LHD end of the market?

The prices haven't converged as much if you look at LHD one's in continental Europe....
