Removed gearbox second time round had a good look checked the gearbox output shaft for play and out of round using dti gauge all fine.

the only problem i can see was that the clutch bearing guide tube was slightly bent and not central so replaced bearing/lever/guide tube and RMS.

Suggestion
Should be compulsory reading for all prospective buyers of s/h 996/986 cars as there's probably loads running around with replacement clutches fitted by "normal" garages where the owner decided to scrimp on getting a new DMF.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is my first post was hoping it would be a happy one but hey thats life.
I bought a 996 carrera 4 1999 model sold as seen with clutch/gearbox problem, the last owner had a new clutch kit/flywheel and slave cylinder fitted. but only lasted a week before the bearing failed and done a deal with the garage of some kind and sold the car on (to me)
I removed the gearbox to find the the bearing had collasped and the clutch release lever damaged due to rubbing on pressure plate.
fitted new lever and bearing drove the car and all was fine until i opened the throttle a bit, felt heavy vibrations from engine bay and it traveled along the front. the clutch pedal went to the floor and the bearing had collasped AGAIN (within 3 miles)
Removed gearbox second time round had a good look checked the gearbox output shaft for play and out of round using dti gauge all fine. the only problem i can see was that the clutch bearing guide tube was slightly bent and not central so replaced bearing/lever/guide tube and RMS.
Drove the car and the same thing has happened agian :frustrated: i did notice that the crankshaft had very slight up/down movement when doing the rear seal apart from that a bit lost now. so wondering if anyone has had any similar problems ?
It sounds as if the bearing is falling off the lever
There is a crappy retaining method that needs to be secure
Bend the springs in for a tighter grip
Clutch Grease on the tube check the lever post is in top condition
If the bearing was binding (running with the clutch) it should start singing and eventually collapse
Does the bearing look heated?
Did collapse when you pressed it?
Sounds like it vibrated and then failed without a push reading your thread
the bearing was secure in place and also the lever is locked tight with the spring i double checked this before fitting, there is no clutch noise or bearing noise and all works fine you can proberly drive the car with no problems if you keep the SPEED down.
There are marks inside the bell-housing as if the flywheel teeth have been hitting the casing, which seems that it might be crankshaft movement at mid-revs which would explain the vibirations i,m getting just before the clutch bearing lets go.
not had much dealings with this type of engine before but if that was the case (worn main bearing) i assume that i will get a oil pressure drop and knocking noise from engine?
That is one scary thread Stuart. Should be compulsory reading for all prospective buyers of s/h 996/986 cars as there's probably loads running around with replacement clutches fitted by "normal" garages where the owner decided to scrimp on getting a new DMF.
