Speaking for myself, I don't mind spending money on the usual (starter motor, plugs, alternator etc) but I don't really want to be shelling out for the 'exotic' such as active engine mounts, active dampers, mouse nibbled fibre optics (probably a bad example) etc.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So in 2011 I buy a 997.1 (2007) Comfort for £60.5k with 17k miles. A year later I swap back to a 996.2 (2003) Comfort for £40k (personal preference, but that's another story). Today the 6 with 24k is worth around £50-55 and JZ have a nice 7 for around 65 with 33k. So is the 6 gaining on the 7? There are more experienced observers than me here who will correct me I am sure, but I always felt the 6 to be a bit special simply because to me it seems to be the last simple/pure/unadorned 911 before trick technology came in to play. Perhaps there are other factors such as numbers built. I don't know. So... can the 6 (comfort and cs) overtake the 7 equivalent? hmm.

POST 2Original post

At this moment in time I don't think so,not yet anyways. If you offered me a swap for my 996 and a 997.1 GT3 I'd say no. Offer me a 997.2 GT3 though and it would be an easy yes.

POST 3Original post

I don't understand the snobbery about the 997 GT3 having stability/traction; you can switch it all off! As a result, fail to see what the 996 offers over and above. Let's face it, the 997 is a darn sight better looking, and it fulfils the other two bobblehat criteria (manual and mezger). In years to come, i believe the 997 will be recognised as one of the most beautiful iterations of the 911. It will likely also be the last 'proper' manual (excluding 991 as everyone hates the 7 speed). As such, i think will only grow between other models. I really like our 991 GT3, but i am realistic in knowing that it is first of many tech-rich GT3s. I imagine therefore it will be improved upon and quickly forgot. That is unless it becomes the last N/A model, it won't be an appreciating asset into the future. Don't you think it's funny though - every iteration claims to be "the last of <insert something>" though. Gives fuel to the argument that the bubble will burst at some point.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I cant say I disagree about the looks, I also prefer the 997. Thing is though, and the reason for the post, is that 6 prices just seem to be accelerating faster than 7 prices, despite arguments about better looks, better car etc. There maybe another factor here, and this is just a maybe; I've just had an annual minor service done on my 6 and as usual we found a few things needed doing, so instead of 300 odd it came in at 1500 odd (with a new start motor) among other things. The 7 introduced quite a bit of tech and I suspect that as the car ages there is more for the annual check up to find and pay for. I wonder, does this affect buyers looking for the ideal older car who want to keep costs respectable?. Speaking for myself, I don't mind spending money on the usual (starter motor, plugs, alternator etc) but I don't really want to be shelling out for the 'exotic' such as active engine mounts, active dampers, mouse nibbled fibre optics (probably a bad example) etc.

POST 5Original post

Guess it depends on the condition of the cars. Did anyone expect a 96Rs to be more than a 7.2RS (until JZM? sold one for 150k vs 140 for the 6)?

POST 6Original post

Are prices of 96's accelerating faster? not sure that they are - I think both have increased c 10 - 15k in the last 12(ish) months A pal of mine paid 70ish for a low mileage 997 with ceramics etc 3 years ago which probably was worth 60k (?) a year or so ago and is likely back worth 70k now I think my 996 has increased c 10 - 15k in the last couple of years also so I'm not seeing a big differential It's almost the same with the RS models, well 997.2 rather than .1 - they have increased c 50 to 60k recently and the 996 is c 60k to 70k higher Not much in it and I think the 997 will always be worth more than 996, although the RS story may be different......

POST 7Original post

All variants have risen, however, there seems to be a bit of a lower rise on the 997.1 variant I suspect it is really because the 997.2 further improved the same basic formula...I am sure that makes the 997.1 a bit of a value bargain I prefer the 996 platform over the 997.1 and probably even a 997.2 but i think the lower cost of the 996 has its own attraction.

Did you sell the 997 back to JZM in early 2012, I think I bought it. Still got it and love it very much...

Yup. A really lovely car with a great spec, it was hard to see it go. Very chuffed to see it again, thanks. Nick

POST 10Original post

I suspect we are more or less there for MK1 versus Gen1. Low mileage Gen1 are £70k from a dealer? We haven't seen a low mileage MK1 for sale from a dealer since the Fletchdale SY CS with 25k miles at £58k. That was in February. The next time one comes up at a dealer in good spec, low mileage, it will be high £60's. IMO
