I've got an 08 2.7
Cayman
circa 74k miles on the clock and now we've got some nice spring weather and the windows are down I've noticed an annoying sound from the engine/exhaust. I can only hear it when the windows are down and i'm in a confined space like my garage or
next
to another car. The engine sounds really ticky/tappity and not nice at all. Stationary at idle it sounds really tight and when it's rev'd it also sounds nice from the outside so i'm a bit confused. Completely random and un-technical post so apologies!
If you hear this sound all the time, you are likely just hearing the fuel injectors opening and closing.
If the sound only happens when the car is cold, it's the tappets - that sound disappears when the oil pressure gets up to normal.
Want to hear something scary ?? Drive it with the engine cover off....
I hope so took it out for a drive Thursday and soon as i got it out of the garage i got a very rough misfiring engine and then the CEL on with the 'take me to the dealer' message. It's at my local Porsche Specialist now, They've changed the coils, that didn't fix it. They've put new bolts in the manifold/exhaust join to fix a hole that had opened up in the joint - that didn't fix the misfire. Now i'm a bit worried it's a re-build.
Anything i should be getting them to go through to in order to diagnose the misfire quicker?
How about a bore scope of the cylinders and a compression test. What was the code that caused the CEL ?
Turns out they've tracked it down this morning. Air/vacuum leak - wouldn't have thought that would have made it run so rough.
I'm not surprised, vacuum leaks can play all kinds of havoc. Glad it was a minor issue!
So am I - my internet research was beginning to make me think it was something serious! However now with new coils and plugs the ticking noise from my first post has gone!
So it was not the vacuum leak? Was the real issue new plugs and coils?
The vacuum leak was the real cause of the terrible misfire, i don't think the worn coils were helping. However the annoying ticking sound i was experiencing must have been down to the worn coils
