Alternatively what would be the recommended stereo to fit in my car that had a docking station already on it?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone advise on placing an iPod docking station in my 1999 911? I currently have a Porsche stereo with the 6 CD autochanger in th boot. It's very good but has anyone been able to adapt this to place an iPod dock that works through this system? Or am I being VERY hopeful!!
Alternatively what would be the recommended stereo to fit in my car that had a docking station already on it?
I've seen the ipod connectors that plug into the cigarette lighter and have a built in cradle. I haven't bought one yet so hopefully someone will be along soon with further info

Mobridge is and or the Denison unit provide the functionality at a price, if you want a low cost solution the Griffin Itrip works fine. Ive also heard that the Belkin equiv is ok bt not tried it. Assuming RDS is enabled the Itrip dispays the track etc of the MP3. I use mine with an Iphone which has the CoPilot sat nav software uploaded, you can play MP3's and have the sat nav running at the same time which is great, all integrated into one system.
The only other way to have all this tech would be to go down the double din route, all depends on how deep your pockets are and if you want to keep the car std. I understand from other posts if the car is under Porsche warranty the installation of the Mobridge or similar could invalidate the warranty, whereas a plug in won't.
I had a Parrot MK9200i fitted. Plays Ipod through all speakers and bluetooth's my phone as well. Cost about £150-170 on the net. Needs professional fitting for best results. Works very well

Mine came with a "Cygnett Groove Transmit" iPod cradle left in the glove box. It spends most of it's time sat in there - but when you do want to listen to your iPod, it works a treat. Unlike others I've tried before, it does lock on to a free FM channel and stay there even when you drive long distances - and you can save 4 pre-sets. I think they're about £35
On the Cygnett web site, they actually market it with a picture of it in a 996

I have a I pod transmitter,one the better ones.
It plugs into the lighter socket wobbles about.I find working the pod whilst driving is hard work and dangerous.I have given up with it.
I really would like to change my head unit, run mp3 and retain my 6 x cd player.
Is this possible?
Cygnett Groove Transporter 2 gets my vote if Mobridge is not feasible(warranty permitting). £35 from Play.
I have tried a couple of Belkin FM units, the tomtom ipod FM hookup and a battery powered dongle which transmitted the track name through RDS to the radio display , all dismal around London or any city.
The Cygnett worked well driving across London, up the M1, M6 and was brilliant in the countryside. The DC power from the car gives a better signal than a batter.
But we all know FM units are not going to as good as a wired connection.
The Cayman I borrowed the other day had the Universal Adaptor with the headphone lead and it was so much better.
The Cygnett has a good remote which allows you to do most functions. The cradle is excellent from the ciggarette lighter on the 996 dash.
The holder is better for the classic than an iphone because it can block the LCD for the FM freq.
The sound is full on all ranges but no better than a radio station.
But the sound of the car and road will remove any of the finer detail of sound. It will never sound like a Bose or Harmon Kardon in an Audi A6 or BMW 5 series.
For me the sound is nice and solid on the Cygnett even with the top down on the motorway with the wind break.
There is a thread here with fitting instructions where CD changer can be swapped out quite esaily for the dension.
I have a Belkin device for my Mercedes it works well, plugs into the lighter and you just tune a couple of stations. For my Turbo the original owner removed the factory stereo and replaced it with new one with an iPod dongle. It works well except that it wouldn't keep the iPhone charged so I just got an extension piece about 1"sqaure that provides the correct voltage and charges the phone.
In regards to cradles I haven't been impressed with what I've seen, so I made a couple out of No8 fencing wire, their quite cool and sit nicely in both cars and work really well. Cost essentially nothing and really functional. If anyones interested I'll take a photo of one and post it.
Cheers
Jeremy
I had a Dension gateway in mine, operates through the headunit, charges and allows limited access to playlists - was a good piece of kit althouh you would have to disable the 6 disc changer to use one.
I have just replaced the head unit and have my old one about if you were interested??
