Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

And don't forget to replace the "people" air filter.

Suggestion
K&N filters are not "fully" functional unless the owner uses, regularly, "proper" cleaning and re-oiling technique.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 99 996 and need to clean out my K&N filter. There is nothing in the owenrs manual that tells me where it is or how to get at it. Can anyone give me a detailed explanation of how to get to my filter to clean it. I already bought the cleaning kit.
Thanks in advance.

Open the rear engine lid and right in front of you will see the rectangular black plastic box that contains the air filter
PS: don't over oil the K&N or you will damage the sensor.
And don't forget to replace the "people" air filter. Under the front bonnet on the passenger side of the battery.
The one in my 01 C4 was quite thoroughly clogged at only 8k miles.
Thanks for everyones help, I was able to get the filter out. Thanks especailly to Loren's DIY page which had detailed instructions with pictures. Very helpful. I have a question about oiling, my mechanic told me that I should not oil the filter but K&N documentation says if I dont oil then I am not stopping dirt or something like that. Any suggestions? Also not sure what you mean by with the indiana jones reference.

Does anyone know what Porsche's policy is regarding warranty coverage with a non-dealer installed K&N?
K&N filters are not "fully" functional unless the owner uses, regularly, "proper" cleaning and re-oiling technique.
As far as I know, the dealer will service your car if it has a K&N or BMC filter. I bought mine used with the filter in there, I am jsut trying to clean it and recharge it because the porsche tech at the dealer told me I should. From the replies it looks like I have to oil it somewhat but just be very conservative with the oiling.

A turbo owner on another board tested the airflow in CFM on the K&N and compared it to the stock twin turbo air cleaner. The stock air cleaner actually had better flow rates than the K&N. I've since removed mine and replaced it with the stock unit.
