When the engine is running, try to wiggle the key in the ignition without turning the ignition position and you may find that the fault will be intermittant.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This morning the wipers, rear windscreen heater didn't work.
Hi,
When the engine is running on my 99 - 996 cab I have no wipers, headlights, seat heaters and a few other things I guess. I can get high beam.
The clock was flashing also.
All is fine with the ignition on, but as soon as I start the car I lose them all.
Any advice on where to start ?
I am in Cyprus  and dont fancy a Cypriot electrian if I can help it.
Anybody else in Cyprus ?
Thanks
Scott
ps... Its sunny here
  :bandit:
Will you put me up for two weeks while I fix it?
I love Cyprus, been erm 10+ times but then I WAS a garage fan <waits for stick>
Ok, it sounds like a relay fault as in the relay is somehow working in reverse when the engine starts up it goes open circuit.
Need to locate the relay for these components, pull it out, give a few gentle taps on the floor then put back in to see if it cures it. Maybe pop the cap off the relay and look for corrosion (usually a Green powdery substance)
I no luck there let me know.
If you promise to fix it sure
I'll take a good look tomorrow, any idea where the relays are.
No doubt it will all be working when I check it tomorrow.
Thanks
Scott
My money would be on the ignition switch. They break up inside, and cause all sorts of wierd electrical problems like this. Porsche no longer sell the switch unit, but you can buy it from a VW dealer. Part number: 4A0 905 849B
I have a DIY I did (for RHD cars). If you would like a copy, drop me a PM with your email address.
I agree with Richard, it will definately be the ignition switch - I had the same fault with my 996 a while ago and thanks to Richard's guide I replaced it in about an hour. The new switch was only about £15.
When the engine is running, try to wiggle the key in the ignition without turning the ignition position and you may find that the fault will be intermittant. To be honest, for the ease of replacement and cost, I would change it anyway.
I can come and give you a hand fixing the problem
... By the way the ignition switch is more likely causing the problems as mentioned by our fellow members.
As for the weather...... :damn:

ps: I do not think you will find too many 911 in Cyprus let alone members of the 911uk
Hi Guys
I'm having a similar problem...
This morning the wipers, rear windscreen heater didn't work. My alarm and central locking has gone all funny, works some times, the horn goes off (never use to) when the alarm eventually works.
Reading the treads it could be my ignition switch as well. Someone mentioned that porsche dont sell them and you can get them from VW?
I've got a 2001 996 C2, will the vw part no 4AO 905 work on my car?
Thanks
Hi
I ordered the part but have not fitted it yet, what I have found is that if I turn the key slightly anti clockwise it works fine. If that stops working then I'll replace the switch..
Hi
I changed my switch last night. It took me about half an hour with Richard H's How To guide.. Thanks Richards!!!!! :thumb:
All electrics work now but the horn still goes off when i activate or disable the alarm?????? Any ideas anyone?
