Suggestion · Original poster

Thinking of putting a short shifter on my 996 C2....Would this make the gear change slicker, i think the standard shift is to long and a bit sloppy.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thinking of putting a short shifter on my 996 C2....Would this make the gear change slicker, i think the standard shift is to long and a bit sloppy. Anyone got the Short Shift...any advice appreciated

POST 2Original post

fit the standard 997 Carrera short shift which is shorter but not so shot as to make it so notchy, only circa £150 other end of the scale is the rifle bolt Manthey shifter at £700+

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So the 997 short shift will fit my 996?

POST 4Original post

oem standard 997 carrera shifter, which is actually shorter than 996 fits fine other 'shorter' options available from http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_996_gearbox_transmission_upgrades.html

POST 5Original post

I put a B&M "Style" shifter in mine, best money I have spent - transformed the feel of the gearbox and cannot recommend it enough.

POST 6Original post

I have the Techart one on mine set at 30% reduction. Completely reversible and a very nice improvement as the standard one is soooooo long.

POST 7Original post

Yes it will with none of the notchiness of aftermarket short shift kits. Should be a 30% reduction in throw. Fully fitted cost circa £350

POST 8Original post

I bought the B&M style for my 996tt, desperate to get it fitted as I also feel the throw is far toooo long, just afraid to get it fitted now in case it invalidates my warranty.

POST 9Original post

Had that one on my turbo. Really annoying after a while. Just plain notchy, the short throw novelty soon wore off. I felt the 'box did not appreciate being rushed anyway. The std 997 unit fitted to a 996 is reletively cheap, about 10% shorther throw than std and smooth as butter.

POST 10Original post

Yep, exactly what I have and very happy with it. Not so much reduction to cause problems but enough to get rid of all the sloppiness and totally reversible. Takes about an hour to fit. Suitable Instructions at http://www.bmracing.com/media/products/pdf/67.pdf . Just ignore all reference to busting out the bushes as the whole assembly is supplied with it anyway. Part number 997 Short Shift Kit 997 424 983 00 J

POST 11Original post

The 997 short shift was about £250 when I looked. I ended up fitting the standard 997 mechanism to my turbo for £125 which shortened the throw by about 10% and feels about right (and means I can reach 1st without stretching!). The metal parts used in the construction made the change much more positive without any of the cold start notchiness I've read about with the snort shift. As mentioned, it seems like they're meant to have a longer throw, but worst case, if you fit an aftermarket short shift, it's a 30 minute job when you've done it once so you can always remove it and sell it. One tip when removing the gear knob, is to feel through the boot to check whether it's bolted or just push fit. If it's push fit.. look out of the side window while pulling upwards or you may loose yout front teeth :grey:
