I would think a quicik call to the OPC would clarify where the hoses run for the different fluids...?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys, I have a 2004 996 C4S Tiptronic. Just yesterday it started leaking some fluid from just behind the left tailpipe (left as you look at the car from the rear). It appears to be a leaking hose/hose joint. It leaked onto my driveway after a 20 mile run and stopped a few minutes after the engine was switched off. I didn't think to capture the fluid in a cap for analysis, but the feel was slightly silky (def not engine oil) and a swab with a piece of kitchen paper revealed it to have a slight pink tone. My guess is that it is Automatic Transmission Fluid. Now 2 questions. 1. Can anyone confirm if a hose carrying ATF is present in that location? 2. How do I check the ATF level so I can be sure I can run it to the OPC nearest me (just a 3 mile run luckily) 3. If anyone thinks it could be anything other than ATF could they please say!! Cheers, Stu.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its definitely left an oily type stain on the drive. Would coolant do that?

POST 4Original post

I would think a quicik call to the OPC would clarify where the hoses run for the different fluids...? or, there are some great workshop manuals you can download online - these would show you where the lines run...?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, thank you guys. It is coolant and its leaking from the overflow pipe. How usual is it for coolant to overflow into this pipe? Can anyone tell me how this pipe should be routed down through the engine bay? mine seems to not follow a natural route and when it overflows it seems to spew its guts over other engine components and pipes. Any ideas as to the correct routing of this overflow pipe? Thank you
