Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. The car will have the Harman audio package (all early 996Ts were fitted with it).

If you were replacing the head unit, you could always replace the amp and fit a new sub somewhere.

Showing signs of a once younger life - can these be replaced easily?

Not difficult to replace the gearknob and gaiter, but fairly expensive.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I went ot view an early 996TT the other day, nice car but missing a few options so I was wondering how easy - or if possible - to retro fit these?
1. Sat nav? It has none, I don't really need it as I have a Garmin but for resale I think it would be a bonus - can this be retro fitted? i.e. a PCM2 comes up for grabs can I fit it? Rough cost for these units?
2. No bose sound. How accessible are the speakers etc to upgrade? The interior was very quiet, I'd hate to get some new sounds in there and it ruins the interior. Plus, can a sub be installed?
3. Gear knob and surround (leather base). Showing signs of a once younger life - can these be replaced easily?
4. It has sports seats, just the back is electronic, are later sports seats all components electronic? I wouldn't change these it's more of a consideration point to go for a later car instead.
5. The "panel" under the windscreen wipers is grey, has this faded? Are they normally black? Can this be changed?
Sorry for all the questions but I don't want to get too far down the line to find I can't change something that I thought I could and not be 100% satisfied. These maybe minor things to some people but having kept my last car for 9 years I like to get the exact car I want and enjoy

Hi Matt
1. It would be senseless to retrofit PCM1, as it is such an outdated system. (Early cars had PCM1 not PCM2). If you plan to keep the car for a while, then maybe consider a modern double-DIN nav system which look good in the car, and not at all out of place.
2. The car will have the Harman audio package (all early 996Ts were fitted with it). Not too difficult to upgrade the speakers, but no provision for a sub on the amp.
3. Not difficult to replace the gearknob and gaiter, but fairly expensive. - about £150
4. Sports seats are usually the preferred choice, and even the later cars have backrest electrics only.
5. That panel usually fades. Believe it or not, it is only £38 inc VAT for a new one.

Cheers for the info Richard...
Can the HK sub be changed easily? If so, is there actual space for a sub to go in?
One thing I forgot to ask how much are rear light clusters? Off side.
The Harman amp doesn't have a sub at all. If you were replacing the head unit, you could always replace the amp and fit a new sub somewhere. I built a speaker box to go behind the rear seats and fittted a couple of 6x9 ellipticals and didn't bother with a sub. Plenty of bass for an old fart like me, but maybe not bangin' enough for a youngster!
The rear light clusters are £290+VAT each. I picked up a perfect second hand one on eBay for £75 for mine.
1. Double din aftermarket unit all the way. I did it and a great move.
3. Gear knob and surround is an easy job but as Richard says they arent cheap. i got the techquipment carbon fibre set up and it looks great. Got it on ebay but normally £300!
5. You could try cleaning it with back to black plastic reconditioner available in Halfords etc. Should bring it up pretty well.
thanks for the replies.. If I added a double din sat nav unit where does the existing air con controls go? AndrewM - do you have a picture of your sat nav in place?
The A/C panel is moved to the bottom. You just need a small trim piece at about £3. The cable in the loom will reach the bottom position easily.
Here are the two I have done:
My 2004 model has full electric seats as standard with adjustment for height, fore/aft, backrest and tilt, and memory function on drivers seat. Not sure which year these became standard though. The electric lumbar support was an optional extra.
Memory seats are always a must for me as I am 6ft and my wife is 5ft, and 'yes' she is on the
insurance
, and 'no' she hasn't driven it yet.
I expect the a/c panel would fit there, but I'm not sure the surround trim would fit. Maybe someone else can chime in.
I made the splash screen in a graphics program and imported it onto the AVIC via the SD Card. That may sound complicated, but it's dead easy really.
As for the seats, memory seats were standard, and sports seats an option.
After owning my TT for a while now, forget about all the little bits and pieces, most important is to make sure the car is sound, and if not you have a good grasp of what needs to be done to it... even putting minor mechanical things right will cost the same as some of the extras your considering...
I hear what you are saying Kiwi - any car I buy will be getting a 111 point inspection as I am sure I'll be blind to even the most obvious faults being all childishly excited about buying a 911 turbo.
But I am prepared to spend time looknig for the "right" one, or indeed upgrading a sound one to the spec I want. I just need to know it is possible. If I bought it and then could not change aspects I am not 100% on I'd feel a fool :frustrated:
Ill try and get a pic or two - Ive promised a couple for wheel/brake refurb threads.
Richard was a great help and provided plenty of assistance to me in the job. Wiring was the only real problem although the non-standard surround required me to cut out and make my own. Non badly at all if I say so myself 8)
