Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hi guys
my gear stick has a bad rattle and im going to have a look tomorrow. I have looked at all the threads here but they seem to all be focused on the difficulty of removing the factory gearstick. i was lucky to have the carbon fibre porsche crested one with the alu-look surround when i bought the car. Im sure its not difficult but i dont want to force/break anything as it costs about £450.00!!! so my question is, how do you unclip the gaiter surround? i dont want to start wedging it up if theres a simple way.
thanks guys, any answers are much appreciated
peter
it is just clipped onto the main conole and can be carefully prized off. Use a cloth and screw driver to avoid any damage and dont force it. I changed my whole surround and gaiter as the leather knob was worn.took about 5 mins. Hardest part was not the surround but prizing the lever section off the gearstick. Good luck.
Thankyou so much for that!
have you seen the price of the parts like the carbon fibre gear knob and the center console in either aluminium paint or carbon fibre especially? can cost around £600! Maybe a bit more! You would have to spend a good few grand to kit the whole thing out in cf! I will tackle it tomorrow! Thanks again

The gearknob can be spectacularly difficult to remove. Mine is a turbo which I think may be a different gearknob (?). Could only be removed by using a piece of wood with a hole cut in it and a slot to go round the lever shaft. Then pulled hard with both hands either side. Very hard work and came off so hard it hit the roof - hard!
I had the carbon one but it cracked bizarrely
After pulling up the surround fully over the knob you'll find a grub screw on the leading edge underneath. Simply undo it and it'll lift off. Mine wasn't interference fit but other guys, like AndrewM, have had real hassle pulling them off!

Thanks so much guys,
I got it off and it's true, it's just clipped in but I tell you, one side came off and the other wouldn't, then with some extra pressure, the whole thing just flew off with the worst sound ever, I closed my eyes as I was sue I snapped the clips but they were fine when I plucked the courage to open my eyes lol! I reckon you can break them easily though! Thanks for the answers.
The reason I wanted to take it off was to investigate my rattling gear stick which is a short shift! I thought that a nut might need tightening but turns out the whole unit has sone play in it so I'll have to remove the whole console
