I just installed the titanium version of the B&M short shifter.

Suggestion
At any rate, if you adjust the aluminum housing for smoother operation when hot, then it may be too sloppy when cold.

Suggestion
As an engineer I can't see a compelling reason to use titanium for the increased cost.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been reading some of the posts about B&M short Shifters and everyone seems to like them. I know you put a group order in at one time and received a discount.
Who has the best price if you want to buy just one???
What's up with the Foreign website?
I could only find Boxster parts and a Boxster page and nothing at all about a B&M shifter.
Anybody know what kind of wheels those are on the 996 on the homepage?
Lance,
Their last project car was a BoxsterS, hence all the pictures and info about the Boxster. The current project car is a 2003 c4s. Best to call them and speak to bob or bobby 1t [phone removed].

I just called Foreign Affair Motorsports and spoke with Allen. HE quoted me $275 for the B&M. I said some guys on RennList paid $199. HE told me that was way too low and that was what they pay for them!
I called Foreign Affairs yesterday and asked for Bobby, told him I heard about him thru Rennlist and that everybody said they had they best prices.
He asked me what I heard, I told him $199 and he said that is the deal of a lifetime but he sold it to me at that price. He also tried to talk me into suspension and exahust but told him just the shifter for now.
Bobby is away till Monday. I'll try him then. Allen sounded pretty firm on the $275. He told me it was $499 installed ($224 in labor).Could that be right. I thought these were easy to install and could be done in an hour.
I'll just speak with Bobby Monday.
I'm not aware of any "new" kit. The B&M website only offers one version that I can see. It says that it fits '98 - '03 911/996. Howerver, I have seen the shifter selling as high as $350.00 retail.
IF you think there's a new kit, send me a link and I'll take a look.
buddy coming fm l.a. to visit thght i hv him pick up the shifter,he called bydesign n was quoted fr the new 'titanium'- b&m special pricing at 399 usal in the fours?
That would definatly be different..... The regular B&M is Billet Aluminum. It feels so damn sold as it is.... Not sure what the benefit to having titaniam would be. Now you have my curiosity.
I just installed the titanium version of the B&M short shifter. Here's the story.
I messed up my interpretation of the above emails and asked for Bobby at By Design (as opposed to Foreign Affairs!). Bobby pushed back on the $199 price for the standard (aluminum) version. He eventually gave in but tried to upsell me to the titanium. Long story but he called back and offered me the titanium for $275 as long as I'd post my results on Rennlist. I almost bought it but just couldn't see the reason to spend the extra money. Four days later the titanium version shows up at my house and I've only been charged $200!!
I did a little research by calling B&M and found out the titanium is a special version made specifically for By Design. B&M claims it's 30% lighter than the aluminum. My bathroom scale showed the stock shifter only (no bushings) as 0.6 lbs. The titanium weighed 1.2 lbs. Don't know what the aluminum weighs.
As an engineer I can't see a compelling reason to use titanium for the increased cost. Wear or galling should not be an issue because there are teflon-like interfaces everywhere. Material property-wise, weight, strength, and modulus (stiffness) of titanium is superior. Aluminum in this application seems adequate.
The only area where titanium may have an advantage here is the thermal expansion is about a third that of aluminum. I don't track my car but on a hot day with a hot car, I suppose the aluminum body could expand enough to make the shifter stiffer. Heck, I don't even know if a hot engine/car heats that area up! At any rate, if you adjust the aluminum housing for smoother operation when hot, then it may be too sloppy when cold.
I found the 1/4-1/2 turn "back-off" from "no-bearing-play" in the instructions to feel too loose. I used just short of a 1/4 turn. For me, the play (slop) is mental/emotional. There are no performance related degradations for me.
Just thought I'd pass this on.
