Suggestion

I had my GT4 as a weekend car thinking it would be used for 'me time' to get away to the odd track day or an early morning blast.

May even be better to wait till March if you're in no particular rush now - for example ask yourself how much you will use a GT4 over the winter realistically?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What would you do in my position? The 718 is a PDK in silver with buckets, PDLS+, folding mirrors, Bose, few other options. 22 plate with 4k miles for £96k Or do I get a 911 turbo S 991.1? I have a baby due in January and have access to another car, this would be a weekend toy. I don’t track much but would love to go Nurburgring in whatever I buy with the family next year. I could tow either car there so that’s not a concern re the seats. Just unsure what will hold money better and what would be the better purchase. I’ve been going round and round all week - someone please talk sense into me.

POST 2Original post

You need to try them both as only you can tell what suits you best. They are very different, the GT4 although you could daily it, it is really the weekend toy for track days and fun. The Turbo is the everyday car that will do everything. As I said you need to try them and decide.

POST 3Original post

I'd go for a 991.2 turbo s or 991.1 GT3. Have look at the one owner 991.1 GT3 currently on sale at Bramleys. Its a peach. On both 991s do get an OPC warranty as they do both glitch from time to time. Drove a 718 GT4 PDK a good friend has just laid on on a very fast stretch of technical road I've been driving over 30 years now. I found it a little breathless and a bit too easy to drive but looks wise absolutely fantastic in Gentian Blue. Stunning actually in that hue.

POST 4Original post

If it's a weekend toy only then the GT4. If you may veer into 'daily' country then the Turbo S. In any event I think you should be driving both as much as you can rather than getting on line advice as it tends to be more 'personal opinion' than you need. Whichever way you choose a) you'll be spending a lot of money so it needs to be right and b) you'll love it!

POST 5Original post

As mentioned, the GT4 is more of a weekend toy but it's not as if a Turbo S can't be enjoyed as a weekend car. It will certainly feel special and put a smile on your face. IMO, as a road car the Turbo S offers everything that a GT4 offers and more, especially over a 718 with PDK. With the Turbo you get a car that is more practical, much faster, useable in all weather and you have the option of taking your family with you. It's also less conspicuous; I got tired of looking like I'd come from the track in my GT4. Also at my age (39) it felt like a mid life crisis car, whereas a Turbo S is a classy way to get around with a more timeless design. I think you need to drive them, but be warned, the performance of a Turbo S will be very addictive and hard to walk away from. Edited to add - you mentioned about which will hold money better. GT4s are very mileage sensitive. 991 Turbo S still have a little way to fall, but it has broader appeal and I think it's a safer bet considering where we are heading. The better purchase is a car that you will actually use and enjoy, regardless of depreciation. Edited by Oz83 on Monday 26th September 15:13 Edited by Oz83 on Monday 26th September 15:15

I’ve tested the GT4 and loved it, however my girlfriend is also complaining it’s not as practical as the turbo S. Note - I’m only 26 so the family will only get bigger, but it’s why I want a weekend car. I’ll look into the figures of the TS anyway, just in case.

POST 7Original post

One of the main reasons we buy 911s is so we can take our wife and babies with us However if you want a GT4 just go for it the turbo s may well cost more in terms of overall cost of ownership and everyone is battening down the hatches at the mo. These cars will resume normal depreciation with interest rates set to be hiked etc and general poor state of economy but the GT models always best from this perspective. All caused by hysteria over CV19 and furlough and now Ukraine which means car bubble is set to burst (again). Honestly Boris and Truss are buffoon imposters. I was at tesco the other day and did a shop that used cost circa £35 a few years ago and cost £112 and was £128 before club card discount. Maybe trivial but this sort of thing has a genuine effect on market sentiment I'm keeping my powder dry for now unless I'm invited to buy halo models. These include things like Cayenne turbo GT and Purosangue (unbelievable but true) which are very difficult to get hold of at the mo. May even be better to wait till March if you're in no particular rush now - for example ask yourself how much you will use a GT4 over the winter realistically? Our turbos will and have been be used 24/7 365 days a year for over 15 years (faultlesly by the way). Brilliant cars 911 turbos but the awd makes them cumbersome and over weight on track where the GT products really shine. Definitely look at a gen 2 991.2 turbo s cab I'd buy the saffron yellow sub 10k mile car on Porsche website. Seen the car its stunning that paint is a triple layer pearl effect paint which you can not appreciate properly in photos

Ha ha my wife hated the GT4, she didn't even want to be seen in it. It shouldn't matter but it does, because it means you'll use the car less. I have 2 small kids. I had my GT4 as a weekend car thinking it would be used for 'me time' to get away to the odd track day or an early morning blast. The reality is that the GT4 on Cup 2 tyres is a summer car so between cold temperatures, bad weather and family life, it just didn't get used as much as I thought it would. Don't get me wrong, they are amazing cars, but as the previous poster mentioned, maybe wait and see what the economy is going to do over the winter, and see how much free time you actually have once the baby comes along :-) All the best! It's a nice choice to have!

POST 9Original post

More practicality i.e. kidspace with the 911 but the Cayman has great luggage space front and rear. Absence of lift option on the GT4 is slightly annoying as the restricted front clearance is identical to the GT3 and these cars are prone to scraping if sleeping policemen speed bumps and driveways are an issue in your area. GT4 standard Cup tyres impractical for December to April usage sub 7 degrees in the UK so you will need different tyres if wanting winter use. Turbo is fast but uninvolving here is where the GT4 scores being a proper Porsche GT although I prefer the excellent if slightly long geared manual gearbox v the PDK which still retains quite a premium ££ due to rarity although these premiums are rapidly falling as there are an increasing number of flipped PDKs on the market whilst imminent production end approaches. Track use no contest the Turbo is no track car very heavy and expensive on consumables in contrast to the GT4 which like the 991.2 GT3 is 50% track and 50% road car so ideal for both rapid road and track use. Residuals on both have held up well although increasing numbers of admittedly £200k plus 992 TTS on the market will inevitably hit 991 Turbo residuals but not too much medium term due to the large price gap. Bear in mind Porsche made the 992 TTS far more focused as a drivers car relative to the 991 TTS which is partly why residuals have remained strong. 981 GT4 residuals still very strong decent spec mileage and provenance low owner cars even at 7 years old still over list price retail so future 718 residuals will inevitably be strong despite higher but still relatively low prod numbers especially with the warranty benefits much better economy and far superior bespoke 8k engine on the newer cars v the 981. Both great cars in their own right btw.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I’ve decided to go with my original purchase of the 718 GT4. The only thing it doesn’t have that I’d of liked is clubsport and dual air con but it’s only a weekend car so I can live with that! Hopefully plenty of ring trips in it!
