I have Bosek I may have the most strangely optioned Cayman on the planet, I bought it used two weeks ago ( It has a 89k window sticker) for 40k. No PCM but the previous owner placed a Den500 and iPod adapter and aftermarket Nuvi.
I am not a fan of stuck on solutions, I also like OEM but if this would have had anything but Bose I would have gone Pioneer F90BT. But I have no desire to spend another 5k on a sound system this year ( twice already)...instead it looks like I can spend that much for a out-dated OEM unit if I want PCM.
Here are my questions...if I just want PCM for now will it just plug into the Bose/Den500 for now ( forget Nav) and work? what about the phone function? Any drama I should be on the lookout for?
This is the PN of the one I am considering:
PART # 997-642-133-05
MODEL : be644
SERIAL: 45004650

I appreciate the help.

There are several revisions of PCM2.1 - standard production station, model level A, model level B, model level C (current version).
997.642.133.05 is a standard production status PCM2.1 unit. You can update this unit to the level b software though.
The big change came around mid-05 with the Level-B units that were mp3 capable in the single CD unit.
As you have bose you should look for a PCM unit where the 9th digit is a 3 (3=bose, 1=non-bose). If I remember right the non-bose version will still work with bose, but it has amps in the PCM unit which the bose does not require.
The version above should work but you may want to check ebay now and again for a later unit such as model b.
Model A -> 997 642 103 1x
Model B -> 997 642 143 0x
Model C -> 997 642 143 1x
When your unit arrives you may need to go the Porsche dealer and ask them to properly code the unit for your car, enable the optical out, upgrade the PCM software to 3.x, and perhaps code the PCM to expect a cd-changer so that the GW500 will work.
Once you've done that the GW500 should work great, and if you want phone integration just look at the BTA1500 add-on to the GW500.
Hope that helps.
Matt.
