Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'pc9-408 lead' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'pc9-408 lead' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect cables' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

This was quite fiddly and required an extra set of hands but it all fitted nicely.

Put in the sculpted surround, replaced the Nav Disk unit with a Cubby from Porsche which I drilled and mounted the USB connector against the side of.

I drove it down there with the dash in bits so I could ensure it was the right one.

Disconnect all the cables from the rear of the PCM and removal is complete.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I decided my tired looking PCM 1.0 system had seen better days so decided it was time to upgrade. After a lot of research on-line I decided to give it a go. As the PCM 1.0 system is a Double DIN unit then I decided a nice Double DIN after market unit was the best upgrade.
My requirement was for a good quality Sat Nav system and modern audio with USB socket etc. I wasn't that fussed about Bluetooth or ipod integration. I have that in my other car and can count the number of times I've actually used it on one hand.
The unit I went for was the Kenwood DNX5240. I went for this because the Kenwood has integrated Garmin Sat Nav and it seemed to tick all the boxes.
Got the unit for £539.99 and it arrived next day.
The PCM system was quite simple to remove.
Unclip the 2 accesory switch panels from the side of the unit. Pop the switches through and these come off quite easily.
Remove the front cowling which removes air vents etc which has 4 torx screws golding it in. 2 clips on the side of the PCM then remove it really easily. Disconnect all the cables from the rear of the PCM and removal is complete.
The power lead to the PCM plugged into the Kenwood wiring loom as standard. The speaker / amp lead needed an adapter from the local car hifi shop. I drove it down there with the dash in bits so I could ensure it was the right one. Turned out to be PC9-408 lead. Also needed an ISO to DIN aerial adapter for the aerial cable. This was another £30 for these two.
Next challenge was to swap the GPS detector in the dash. This was quite fiddly and required an extra set of hands but it all fitted nicely.
Then it was just a matter of putting it all back together which was quite simple.
Am very pleased with the result but a couple of jobs still to complete.
1. Going to remove the original Sat Nav disk drive and replace it with one of the Porsche 4 x CD holders.
2. Need to sort out the USB socket which I just have sticking out through one of the accessory switch slots at the moment. Looking for advice here!
Photos below so you can see the job.

Why don't you just put in the cubby hole (rather than CD holder) and drop the lead down the back through an aperture in cubby top/rear.
Then when its not in use it can't really be seen, and the rubber insert will stop it moving around too much.
Then when you attach USB key it has somewhere to sit and won't move round much either.
You could even hotglue etc the receiver socket down the side of the cubby, and then just push USB key when is use into it. Like those mini torches in BMWs.
Don't forget, you can get an lower and upper cubby, so it can be further out of sight and the CC display/controls can be higher for ease of access.
AFAIK they're about £12 (the 4xCD draws are only £26ish)
I am sure Richard H will be along soon with the price list ...
If you plan to move the CC you will need a new trim piece too.
The CC panel has four positions and can be filled to standard DIN for top (CC or 1/2 PCM screen), upper middle (CC or single radio/CD/cassette or 1/2 nav screen), lower middle (CC or nav disc or sound processor or cubby) or wedge shaped for bottom-most position (CC or cubby).
Probably other option/gadget permutations I have forgotten
I'm here, I'm here!!
Cubby for top of lower console - 996.552.253.01.01C - £22.45+VAT
Cubby for bottom of lower console - 996.552.243.01.01C - £22.67+VAT
CD Holder for top of lower console - 996.552.773.00 - £63.58+VAT
(Yes, that really does say £63.58!!)
If you really want to splash out, the cubbies are available in leather, at about £330!!
That's a good question. Porsche don't make an aircon panel trim surround for that position.
Porsche number the positions from top to bottom, 1 to 4. The a/c panel normally goes in position 1 if you have a radio, and position 4 if you have PCM. I don't believe they ever fitted it to position 2 or 3. Last week, I believe someone (tbrown?) suggested that position 3 isn't DIN height, which seems to make sense. Having said that, I'm sure I have seen someone fit it there, but IIRC they made up some kind of non-standard trim surround.
So I finished the job last night. Put in the sculpted surround, replaced the Nav Disk unit with a Cubby from Porsche which I drilled and mounted the USB connector against the side of. Am very pleased with the result now.
