I have a spare AVIC-D3 lying around with an iPod adapter.
Is it possible to just install it without getting an aftermarket amp? Is there an interface you can buy to make it plug-and-play?
Depends if you have Bose or Sound Package plus. We have several install experiences of AVIC-D3's on the board and you can figure out how to find and connect all the wires you need to for the sound package plus (though it's facilitated a lot by purchasing the interface and trim kit from contact navigation, but you'll need an amplifier for the Bose car.

Where are some good places to mount a compact amp? Has anyone done it where the stock amp is?
I've not looked at it closely but I suspect cooling may be an issue where the stock bose amp is located. I think I read somewhere it's a class D switching amp which tends to run cool. Can't swear to any of this, however.
In a way I'm surprised that no one makes a analog line input to MOST bus converter just for ocaisions like this.
So another compact class D amp with good cooling properties should be fine, no?
How many channels would it have to be?
How's this for a plan?
- Pioneer D3 + iPod adapter
- Alpine PDX-4.100 in place of stock amp (where is the stock amp, anyway?) with new wiring from D3
- Resistors to accomodate Bose speakers
- Japanese bezel (where is this on eBay? I have not seen the link)
- Line level to the sub, since it has its own amp, but how would I do that?
That should do it, no?
Thanks for your help!
Not sure about that amp, but the PDX-5 supports 2ohm output, no resistors necessary. That's the one I'm looking at when I install an aftermarket head unit. I believe I read elsewhere on here that the sub takes in amplified signals, not line-level. The bezel is no longer on Ebay, but can be found here

along with the proper wiring harnesses.
Anyone know where the stock amp is?
If you mean the Bose amp IIRC it's behind the panel that holds the tire goo and compressor. Or at least part of it. There may be other bits hidden elsewhere.
