Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Isn't this just the 'smell of a Porsche?' I've smelled this on my car, as well as on the 3 or 4 I test-drove before buying mine.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

last 2 weeks, after an easy ride down highway, when i park i smell burning rubber smell. no smoke, no leaks, cannot see any plastic bag or anything stuck on mufflers...any idea of a common cause for a smell like this? or should i head to the dealer? 2002 996 6l miles...thnx.

POST 2Original post

This might be totally off and i only say it because it happened to me. It turns out that my right side rear brake was not releasing and was getting really hot. You'll know if you have this problem because one of your rims will be so hot you won't be able to touch it. Next time you get out of your car touch all your wheels and check to see if one of them is significantly warmer than the others. This happened to me on my 1990 735i.

POST 3Original post

I think it's a common feature, but don't know what causes it. My '99 C4 stinks when I get it home in the garage. This would have worried me but I had a similar smell with my previous 993 & could never find any burned rubber or plastic in 4 years looking.

POST 4Original post

Could be a 100 different things but when you take it to the dealer it probably wont smell!

POST 5Original post

...get same smell in my '99 996 C4 after drives - but not always. Appears to be common enough for me not to worry too much about!

POST 6Original post

Isn't this just the 'smell of a Porsche?' I've smelled this on my car, as well as on the 3 or 4 I test-drove before buying mine. I've grown to really like the smell - it means I'm driving it hard and that the thing is doing its job!

POST 7Original post

I notice it as well on my '99 C4, especially after driving it hard, but it's good to know so many others do too! I always wondered if I smelled it so much more with this car than on my '90 C4 because this one is in a garage now, and I guess that's why...

POST 8Original post

I wonder if it's the same smell I've smelled on first my SC, then my 993. It is just a hot engine smell.
