Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 3Original post

It really helps the amount you can spend on QC when you build a $50k car and sell it for $80k. Not denigrating Porsche at all, just the facts.

POST 5Original post

Ouch for the Hummer...almost twice as bad as Porsche.......WOW

POST 6Original post

I thought the car selling for more than $20,000 over true value was the Lexus. AS

POST 8Original post

Who gives a flying **** about the Lexus? Talk about a car with absolutely NO SOUL. It is literally driving a robot. They say Yamaha pianos are more tonally perfect than Steinways. But it ain't no Steinway...

POST 9Original post

Well, at 63 problems per 100 cars, Lexus (GS and LS) is almost 1/2 that of Porsche (or BMW for that matter). Considering the "premium" we pay for a Porsche, I expect them to be better than they are. I do disagree with your comments, as an owner of an LS430 I can say it is the best-built, best-engineered car I have owned. After spending a week in the new 740, and a trip to Europe in an S class, they do not even come close imo. There is a reason that Lexus has gone from startup to #1 in North America in 10 years; they build great cars. Roy ps. I used to be "anti" japanese cars, until I owned one.

POST 10Original post

I have to agree with RWO. We've been in the market for a new car for my wife. We recently drove both the MB E-500, S-500 and the LS-430. The LS-430 is a much better car in so many ways. Sure MB has a reputation and perhaps more "soul" than the Lexus but why buy a car with some major flaws over a "soul-less" car that's done right. Same goes for the new BMW 7 series. We were close to purchasing one but after seeing all the problems with the new 7 we decided to stay away.

POST 11Original post

RWO, my dad used to own a Lexus LS 400. It handles like ****. The interior is so japanese, and the motor's sound is non-existent to plain boring. You do not buy a Porsche because you expect Japanese reliability. You buy it because it is a high performance sports car that can outhandle, outbrake, and outaccelerate almost anything on the road, time after time, with reasonable reliability. Case in point: Lexus 4.3L V8= &lt;70hp/L Lexus 3.0 I-6= 71.7 hp/L Porsche 3.6L Flat-6= 89hp/L Porsche 3.6 GT3 Flat-6= 105.6hp/L So who's pushing the envelope? You cannot compare a Toyota to a Porsche. Try tweaking a Supra Turbo to 500hp, I guarantee you that the reliability will go down, not to mention engine longevity. Porsche reliability is excellent considering that their engines put out a good amount of power per engine size. If you compare to other sports car marques, Porsche is the best. For the record, I hate the new 7 series. Its design is atrocious. Obviously since you have a 996TT, you probably couldn't care, but the LS 430 drives like a boat. My 740i Sport outhandles, outaccelerates, and outbrakes the Lexus LS 430. That is a simple fact. On the skidpad, a 740i Sport pulls almost 0.90g, yet still rides pretty nicely. It brakes in a touch over 120ft. from 60-0 and pulls 0-60 in 6 seconds flat. Sure it ain't no Porsche, but it hauls *** and makes you feel confident doing so. Lexus has not made anything close to this car. Let alone the BMW M5. Yes it has more problems than an LS430, but it has been pretty reliable considering how I drive it. Then again I would venture to say that BMWs are probably driven harder than Toyotas. Same thing goes for the GS 430, it is one of the most underwhelming cars ever. Lexus sells well because it builds cars that have lower cost of ownership. Why do you think most Lexus customers are OLD?

POST 12Original post

I can't remember the last time I saw any Lexus out on the track. How you drive an automobile has a lot to do with its reliability. I would venture to say that Porsches are pushed much harder than say Lexus or Cadillacs for that matter. The fact that Porsche is in the top six is a testament to how great these cars really are. Look at the results again, there are no sportscars more reliable than a PORSCHE, PERIOD! That's a Fact! I know that ACURA has the NSX, I used to own one, but really they don't qualify seeing as most of their cars sold were TL's, CL's, MDX's and RSX's (which is impressive considering that the import scene is loaded with young RSX drivers). Just my $.02 after some brief observations.

POST 13Original post

Such a general term like the "quality" here is what? what do they judge that quality by specifically? and what value do they place on each individual outcome measure?... as a measure of "quality" this chart by itself seems to me as useless as a beauty pageant is to measure the "beauty/physique" of the women who participate. To me quality is how well the car holds on a track or hard street driving for others it may be the integrity of their cup holder...

POST 14Original post

Haymann, Good points. The quality measured by JD Powers is number of problems reported per 100 cars. It has nothing to do with the "stress" on the cars. Most of the problems I have personally experianced with my 3 996s are design or build problems (squeaks, rattles, shifter cable falling off, brake duct falling off), they are not problems related to the high performance nature of car. My point was simply that Porsche could build a better car if they wanted too. Some of the problems I have had, and others have reported on the board, are inexcusable for the price of the car. As for your Lexus comments, we can agree to disagree on the subject. There are three suspension options for the Lexus, the sport suspension is very good imo. I don't track the sled so it's performance over/under a 740 is not an issue to me As for your "old" comment, most of the Lexus drivers I know are between 28 and 44, not old in my book, however, I have not seen any demographic data to support or argue your position. Roy

POST 15Original post

Carlos, JD Powers quality is the number of problems reported per 100 cars. Roy

POST 16Original post

Thanks, RWO. I didn't know it was that simple. I would think they would stablish a value for different types of problems according to how much it costs to fix, time needed to fix, nature of the problem, etc. A squeek as irritating as it is is not the same as your brake discs warping from heavy use for example. The list doesn't seem to correspond to build quality and reliability in real life at all. I would think a Merc is more likely to keep running 15 years down the line than a Merc for example. And from the top ten 4 are japanese and 3 american, and only one of them is german? Oh well, I'll take if for what it is, just the number of reported problems per 100 cars. But I would not draw any conclusions of build quality or reliability from this just like I wouldn't discern a car's sportiness capabilities from its 0 to 60mph times.

POST 17Original post

The other issue is that any problem is included. For example, Hummer has been saying that they have a lot of "problems" about "hard to park" and "it gets bad gas mileage"?? Mini has released some data saying that people complained about the "harsh ride" and the center mounted speedometer. It seems to me that you should be aware of those kinds of issues before you buy the car Roy ps. Did I ever tell you about driving an ATV off a cliff in Costa Rica You look like you have spent some time on yours!

POST 18Original post

I agree 100%, RWO. You would think people would know a little of the car they are buying. ATV's and SportQuads, they are fun, aren't they? <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" />

POST 19Original post

Also note that this survey is the "initial" quality. I recall that they survey new car buyers something like only 90 days after purchase. While the "build quality" issues are annoying, the significant issues usually take longer to develop as they are a function of how well the vehicle components were designed to perform their intended function repeatedly. (How many main seals went out in the first 90 days?)

POST 20Original post

I guess Jags are more reliable than I had previously been told. I wonder if they have always been or if this is a recent development since they have been bought by Ford. Porsches seem pretty reliable for a sports car. I wonder if the M3/M5 reliability is in line with the rest of the BMWs, and if the NSX reliability is in line with other Acuras.
