Suspected cause
They said it was the first they had seen, so maybe it is a 10 year weak spot!
Leading evidence: 'first they had seen' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'first they had seen' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace nut and reweld the cut hole' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

i am thinking now that i will have to get someone to cut into the frame, replace the nut and reweld the cut hole.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
as a relatively new owner i was hoping i could get some help with a small issue on my 996 cab. The roof locks into the windscreen frame by hooking under a fixed moulding which is in turn bolted to the frame of the windscreen. Its held in place by two bolts, the o/side one has broke the captive nut it screws into. The remains of this nut is in the frame and i cannot replace it with a riv nut until i can dislodge /remove the broken remnants of the old captive nut.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem please??? i cannot close the roof until i fix this problem. Thanks in advance,
David
Hi, firstly congrats on buying your porsche and welcome to the forum.
I'm not familiar with the fixings, however if it's possible I would drill the centre of the nut with the biggest drill bit you can but must be smaller than the outer size of the nut, then you should be able to get a small screw driver on the outer side of the nut and prise it inwards, the nut should collapse inwards and the pieces should just fall out. However as I've said it all depends on the actual mounting and if it's strong enough to take the force of the drill.
Hopefully one of the guru's will be along and might be able to help you better :thumb:
Good luck
Gary
Hi
I had exactly the same problem on mine. One nut sheared off so the mounting plate was loose. Had to get the OPC to drill our the other and repair. They said it was the first they had seen, so maybe it is a 10 year weak spot!
get in touch if you need any help or photos to show them - I had to lead them through it.
thanks
Thanks guys for your response. Just to clarify the nut is a brass type which is caged within the frame of the windscreen. i have had another look today. They cage the nut and press the frame so the nut can move for adjustment but you cannot get to it. The nut is split and the bolt has nothing to screw into. i am thinking now that i will have to get someone to cut into the frame, replace the nut and reweld the cut hole. Unless i am missing something.Anyweay thanks for your interest.
