I think that a replacement (new or used) requires a code from Porsche that mates the radio's serial number to the vehicle's VIN.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

According to my local Dealer shop, my CDR24 stereo unit is not putting out a fiber optic signal and that is why I am getting no sound out of the speakers. My dealer tells me that each radio is specific to the VIN of the vehicle and thus I can't reprogram another CDR24 from a parted out car. Does that sound right? I thought Dealers could program whatever code was necessary. If the dealer is right, I don't know how Porsche could ever fix a unit broken in any car if they can't be replaced. I see a number of these listed on various sites. What is the Porsche part number CDR24 that would work for my 2007 Boxster S? If the seller gave me the code for that unit (that came out of another Boxster ), what does it take to make that unit work on my car? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Gil

POST 2Original post

I hope I am remembering this correctly. I think that a replacement (new or used) requires a code from Porsche that mates the radio's serial number to the vehicle's VIN. This code is then recorded into the ECU by the dealer using PIWIS . So, it seems your dealer is just trying to sell you a new radio and installation service. You should check with other dealers in your area. Still, even providing your own radio, it will be expensive since they will be charging for their services.
