(Ive got a '53 C4S 38k miles ) I lifted up the rear spring loaded wiper arm to check the blade and I let go of it before the the arm was in the fully upright position and as its spring loaded it shot back down , wiper blade flipped round and the metal spine of the blade scored the rear pillar ( corner pillar between the N/S/R window and the rear screen itself - quite difficult to explain ) SO - I now have a dreadful 'V' shaped score about the overall diameter of a coke can and its too deep to polish out .

When the laq is dry use 1500 grade WD paper on a small block to level the laq so its flush with the rest of body work, being very careful to only sand the laq in the scratch.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I can hardly bring myself to put it into words .....but here goes ........ (Ive got a '53 C4S 38k miles ) I lifted up the rear spring loaded wiper arm to check the blade and I let go of it before the the arm was in the fully upright position and as its spring loaded it shot back down , wiper blade flipped round and the metal spine of the blade scored the rear pillar ( corner pillar between the N/S/R window and the rear screen itself - quite difficult to explain ) SO - I now have a dreadful 'V' shaped score about the overall diameter of a coke can and its too deep to polish out . ...................... how can this be addressed without a massive paint job - is it possible to have a small localised repair carried out - can these mobile ' Chips Away ' franchise boys do this ?? HELP the more I think about this the worse the mental pain becomes - advice appreciated , thanks , Barry ( Glasgow )

POST 2Original post

hi barry - sorry to hear about the damage - its the sort of thing i would do! this is the sort of thing chips away do, not had one done personally but my father has had work done and you could not tell. the paint was mixed in the back of the van and the job done on your drive/place of work.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks in advance................... Thanks for putting my mind at rest - I'll track down a ' Chips Away ' phone number tomorrow ......thanks for the reply - appreciate it

POST 4Original post

Sorry to hear about your bad luck mate. Lets us know how it goes. Good luck Jim

POST 5Original post

You'd be surprised just how many people do this. When searching for mine I saw quite a few with the tell tale scratch marks. My friend has it on his too. Good luck with the repair... :thumb:

POST 6Original post

What you can do is . . . . 1. Using an artist brush with very little paint on it get colour into the scratch not fill it. 2. Once that is dry use a clear laq and fill the scratch so the laq is sitting slightly proud. 3. When the laq is dry use 1500 grade WD paper on a small block to level the laq so its flush with the rest of body work, being very careful to only sand the laq in the scratch. 4. Once the Laq is flush refine with 3000 WD and then 4000 WD being extra careful this is a blending exersise. 5. You should be now left with a hazed area which can be polished out, i would recommend menzerna intensive polish using a Dual action polisher followed by menzerna final finish. Remember to be extra careful when using WD, the aim is to just get the laq in the scratch flush with the rest of the body work ready to polish. Your paintwork only has so much clearcoat and you want to remove as little as possible, as little as a couple of microns. Ideally a paintdepth guage should be used. I'll try and find you a video guide.

POST 7Original post

Whatever route you use to find a solution - before and after pics would be good...?? :thumb:

POST 8Original post

Here is a link to a guide which will give you an idea of what im talking about. This guy hadnt gone through the laq so he didnt need colour but the method he uses is near enough the same as mine, hes basicall doing the same thing. http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=49370&highlight=scratch+repair Hope this of help Dave

POST 9Original post

Haha, a eureka moment. I had been wondering how the hell I had got such a nasty scratch on that pillar. Just checked and yes, it matches the movement of the tip of the blade perfectly. I have also read that using a cocktail stick is better that trying to use the touch up pens. I should have some of the Drcolorchip coming so I will let you know if this works.

POST 11Original post

Too late for you guys now, but a simple loosly-tied cable tie can prevent a lot of grief in the future:

POST 12Original post

I needed two weeks in the Priory after doing this. Suffice to say that the wife no longer bothers creeping up behind me with a 'surprise' cup of tea when I'm washing the rear windscreen with the wiper up.

POST 13Original post

Swap that piece of ***** wiper blade, with the evil metal arm, for one of the flat ones asap (they have a nice safe plastic cap on the end). Don't be too hard on yourself. Two different OPCs did mine when the car was in for servicing. Denied all knowledge. Chipsaway quoted just under £500 to sort, this due to them having to extend the area that required lacquer quite a way. OPC bodyshop quoted a similar price, so could be worth contacting your nearest one.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Gents , as ever it great to see your replies ... Knowing that this is a common problem I dont feel just so bad . I'll do some before and after pictures , however the car has developed a small water leak from the front O/S radiator so its up on our ramps having that replaced at present . This scratch simply must be fixed as I feel a stab in my soul every time I clap eyes on it - so when the time comes I'l do some before and after shots . Should be next week . The cable tie idea is simple genius - but , as you say , too late for me ... 'dstyrell' thanks for the link I'll read up on that and thanks also to the rest of you guys including 'brightblue' cheers
