I am getting the same smell but that will burn off if my experience with changing the exhaust on my previous M3 is any indication.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just installed the PSE (no electronics) - have a couple of questions... 1. It smells horrendous! Could this just be the metal getting used to heating up? It smellls like it's being welded as I drive. 2. It's LOUD - way louder than I thought it would be, and honestly IMHO it sounds a bit like a Monza with a coffee can on the back. Please no offense to those who love it, this is only a 10 minute opinion. Does the sound quality change over time? Finally, don't the PSE owners who have it on a daily driver think that the volume could be a bit too obvious to the five-o? Ive got a heavy right foot and have managed no speeding tickets in a few years, so I'm concerned that it's going to change that. Any thoughts? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Hi Zee Zee. I just had mine installed today. I am getting the same smell but that will burn off if my experience with changing the exhaust on my previous M3 is any indication. I will have to say I am a bit surprised at the sound as well. I thought it would be deeper. It is definitely a mid range buzzing/growling sound that I didn't expect but I like it much better than the stock. I also would like to know if the sound matures as the exhaust ages...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

RadHatCab - is yours the new 2" bypass or the plder 4/5" one? I hear that they sound a bit different (mine's the newer one). Also, I heard from By Design (who did my install) that the 99-01s sound much louder with PSEs than the 02-03s (mine's a 99). Strange, but he swears that the newer 996s don't really make much noise even with aftermarket exhausts. Have you heard this? How loud do you feel it is - at least relative to stock?

POST 4Original post

Mine is the 4/5" one. I really don't find it to be that loud I just am surprised that it is not a deeper sound. If you do not have the electronics hooked up does the by pass even get used? I think it is a lot louder than stock but not annoyingly so. With a Cab I don't want something that is going to blow me away.

POST 5Original post

I've heard the gemballa sounds nice... exotic.. but it may still not be loud enough for you... The 2002 996's have a different cylinder firing order and they sound great stock (IMHO).. don't know how much a PSE will do for a 2002+ 996... Gemballa does sound good though... changes its note throughout the range and not to mention a superb weld quality... regards, Pete

POST 6Original post

Pete, you've been misinformed about the 3.6ls having a different firing order. Courtesy of Loren: The 3.4 firing order is in Group 0, Section 0 Page 6 of the tech manual and it says: "Firing order 1-6-2-4-3-5" The 3.6 firing order is in Group 1 Section 1-1 (MY02 and newer) Page 4 of the tech manual and it says: "Firing order 1-6-2-4-3-5"

POST 7Original post

I had the PSE on my '99 C2 and also have it on my '03 4S. Quite a bit of difference. it's much quieter on the 3.6L....I could definitely hear it more in my '99
