Also, just checked MOT history of the tip and it passed on 68k miles in March this year and ad states 81k miles now so done way more than 6k in last 6 years, more like 16k, which isn’t a bad thing but definitely under serviced.

Suggestion
Mileage would not put me off as long as a good indy has checked the turbo and are happy with it.

Guys -
help me out here -
I'm still debating internally betwixt and old school brutal
3.6 Gen one 997 Turbo
or
an
early-ish 991 with a nice spec
currenly headed towards the newer car, for everyday ease and lower running costs
but there is part of me that has always longed for a 911 turbo in black, and the potential to scratch that itch is also very strong.
Be interested in perspectives on the everyday usability of both.
Will be a weekend car for me - but my wifie will occasionally need to take it into the office (short commute, safe car park)
She is short and weak, and already moans about having to drive the (manual) boxster in traffic...
budget top end £50k
anything else to consider i may have overlooked?
Thanks y'all
You should drive both I'd personally take the C2S if only one car but I'd want one of the very last 991.1 and a low owners, low mileage with ceramics if possible which is still under OPC warranty. If you have turbo itch you can not go wrong with that 911 Virgin turbo you were looking at either if you ask them for a 12 month warranty with the car which is the only thing I ask for when buying from 911 Virgin as cars are generally priced very fairly. You could swap after a year without losing any cash on the turbo they've priced it well. Same with a good spec 991 like this one if you can find one. Nice choice to have. They're so different you need to drive both really
If you’ve always wanted a brutal 911 turbo I think you know the answer - the only thing I’d say is it might not be wife friendly. I daily my 996 turbo but my wife won’t drive it - thinks all the controls are too heavy. She previously drove out early 2.5 Boxster so I think your wife might find the same
However, she would get used to it!

For heaven's sake man, you've answered your own question.
Buy the wife an old petrol Fiesta, and everybody wins.
looks like a nice 991 S, not a fan of auto, but I guess if you get used to it its almost ideal, also a 991 seems 'better' then a 997, its also faster on the Ring I believe.
saying all that, a 997.1 Turbo manual looks more interesting for the driver, for fun, for interacting with the car, more analog?
never driving the more modern Porsche's though (owned some older 930 and 964 ones), just also keeping an eye on some Turbo's with a manual, or the tuned versions say 600hp .1 models or the 500hp 997.2manuals (but more rare and expensive) or... the 997 GT2 with standard 530hp and manual, but, those come at a high price.

Nice one!..you will have a good weekend??
Did you see the low mileage manual one at Mortimers In Billingshurst?
75 bags? ¡Ay, caramba!
Had a 997 turbo and swapped to a 991.1 C4S. Dropped 100hp and increased satisfaction from general character, noise and ability to press on without risking being locked up in 5 seconds from the get go.
997 turbo is much more of a special car than the normal 991 carrera.
You could easily daily a 997 turbo as they are great all rounders and really easy to live with. Plus service intervals are every two years and engines bulletproof (well my old 997.2 turbo s was)
Not so great -
The one at 911 Virgin went this morning
Saw a lovely Cab at Paul Devyea this morning, lovely condition and miles - had been 'driven by pussies' (direct quote)
, and had a full Porsche main dealer history to less than 60k miles
BUT its a cab....
RSJ had also sold the widebody carrera that i was planning to go and see...
Three more Turbos in the running - hoping to see two tomorrow
:
This one in Colchester
higher on miles but its good condition and its a MANUAL
This one in Leicester
slightly more dosh - nicer miles, milltech exhaush, interesting finish (red stitching), is a 1.5 so the later PCM (i think?)
Finally, this one in Birmingham
again later year, modern nav unit - looks like a small trader who has it as his personal car..... don't know the implication of this?? (not been taxed since '21)
Lined up the first in Colchester early doors tomorrow and then going to see if i can squeeze in a drive up to Leicester and round to Brum to have a decent comparison.
or - I might just buy
this one
on a sight unseen basis... anyone seen this style of auction site before?
has a phenomenal level of detail online - but looks to be, missing the proof of early services from the documentation?
Any pointers on any of the above most welcome!
Cheers guys,
Bergs
the 85k not put you off?
it doesnt me but i know folk get sniffy when these approach the 100k mark....
I'm only going to do 3-4k per year - so figure running one of these for a couple of years will still give a good market for resale (as it will be that much older then too, obviously)
Whats you view on the one sold through trade classics? I must admit i'd not seen the site before - but its looks like an effective way of marketing a car.
I wouldn't buy from an auction unless vendor allows full inspection by an indy. What if its perhaps been in an accident and not been repaired correctly etc? Mine had been repaired via Porsche Hatfield a few times previously really minor accidents at parking speeds and when Porsche Reading restored after I had an off on track they found the repairs sub standard and incorrectly carried out by Porsche Hatfield but were all covered by Porsche Lifetime Guarantee thank God. Mileage would not put me off as long as a good indy has checked the turbo and are happy with it. Its a complicated car and the engine will have a compression test by an indy.
TBH i do noythink you'll find a good turbo nowadays for less than 65k GBP. The 911V car was a bargain as its condition was that of a 35k mile car. Maybe add this to the list. Its in your budget and looks clean. With any indy I'd insist on a 12 month warranty on any of these they can be money pits.

Personally if I wanted to buy an older Porsche Turbo like the 997 I would want a manual, also look at the system of those 3.6 turbo automatics, it does not have paddles but switches on the steering...
maybe wait a bit till a manual with lower mileage comes online, although such Turbo can handle the mileage, but for selling it later on.
Don't worry about mileage, worry about condition, use and servicing. You're not buying it for the next owner - it's not like the price magically crashes at 100K miles ....

Definately
Saw in interesting couple yesterday - chalk and cheese when it come to recent use:
This one in Colchester
lovely car - guy is PCGB lifelong porschophile (good chat), he's had it six years and has put 30k miles on it -
Has had the following - all fully documented along with fastidious filing of all the other work:
Discs & Pads & Sensors
Major Service, Clutch Slave, Turbo Actuators, AC regas
Intercooler seals
Minor service, Drive Belt, Coolant Pipes
Major Service - Drive Belt, Spoiler Rams
Front End Respray
Hot Wax & Clean Underside
Starter motor, AC condensors, Air temp sensor
Minor Service, Belt Check, CV outer boots
Water pump, new bellows, clutch pressure cap, Exhaust & Turbo Gaskets, Heat Shields
Offside front shock, covers for front suspension, Brake Fluid
all been done in the last few years - felt tight and just a slightly wearing interior in grey to count against it.
This one in Leicester
On the other hand has done just 6k miles over the last 6 years, had an oil change last year but thats about it...
very good history up to then.
its very nice looking though...
I'm just not sure the tip will do it for me... It does however have a milltech exhaust
What the thoughts on a low milage that has not seemingly had an annual look at? will this count against it as it ages?
Only one oil change in last 6 years makes me think someone could afford to buy the car but not service it. Mine has done similar mileage in last 6 years but serviced as per Porsche schedule without fail.
Many things need to be kept on top off to keep these cars running properly and that car doesn’t seem to have had them done.
The other car looks like it’s been looked after, but if your not sure of the tip don’t do it as may regret it if you really want a manual.

Got my linkies mixed up, the 80k mile one was up in Brum, the Leicester one (which was a beautiful car) deffo had just the 68k on it.
I actually pulled the trigger on another one last night.
Picking up early next week 😁
I think i may have just got the bargain of the year…. Or a world of pain 😂
Watch this space!

Excellent!
Come on though you must have a picture of it to show us
well, if ya insist
2008
Basalt
5 owner
39,500 miles (but a good mileage lately - to carry on the point above...)
full OPC history
just had a large service 300 miles ago
Buzzin'
If you did not do it on the test drive then when it's warmed up do the double blip on the accelerator to reset the gearbox.. then when you open the taps and kickdown ..the acceleration is savage when the turbos cut in...very addictive

What infotainment system is fitted please? That looks aftermarket to me.
Yeah - it is. The guy selling it bought it with a Kenwood aftermarket system fitted which he didn't like - so has had fitted a Pioneer with carplay, wireless etc. Also intagrated with the multifunction steering wheel and has a dash cam that somehow feed the reversing camera too....
all a lot more hi tech than i'm used to
Has the original PCM1 unit as well - if any beardy wants to bring it back to original spec in the future
I think it was a real bargain - based ont he speed at which stuff seems to be moving now.
plenty of deets on the car, pics/vids/ etc
here
Thanks fro the kinds works everyone!
Hope you’re enjoying it, how are you getting on with the gearbox ? Not thinking about missing out on a manual box.
I ask as I am looking out for one at the moment, I am thinking what way to go.
Can’t jump till I sell my car tho.

It's awesome. I'll pop another thread to keep tidy
I'd driven a tip turbo before - but only on an airport day - so no real sensation of the speed.
There is
so much power
it just flows through - i'd worried that the non-pdk box was going to be somewhat 'worse', but I think the grunt just negates and less slick changes
there is a slight feeling of lack of control - but i've yet to work out whether this is just cos i'm new to it and haven't got used to it yet
I need to suss out what that 'double-dip' full power trick is....haven't even tried out sport mode yet...

Not a 997 but I had a manual 996 turbo and I always felt it would have suited the Tiptronic much better. Sure it's not PDK levels but the turbo's just have a very different character being bigger, heavier and more powerful. I actually felt like changing gear was a chore in mine and I'm not some sort of manual hater either, have had a mix of both in the past and feel some cars just suit one much more than the other.
