Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

And that is where the 99's that were tested ended up.

Car And Driver tested a pre-2002 996 and got 4.8 seconds 0 - 60.

Suggestion
I upgraded my 00 to the Euro springs which replace only the front springs.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have heard one dealer say no difference and another say huge difference.
Has anyone out there noticed a significant difference in acceleration or handling between the two. Have heard one dealer say no difference and another say huge difference.
I had a 00 Cab and now have a 02 Cab. The performance differece feels like a lot but the road tests show that they cars are basiclly the same. The improvement in torque makes the 02 car feel like it pulls harder and it seems faster, however, the weight diff negates any improvement in performance.
As to handling, the 02s had crisper turn-in and less understeer out of the box. I upgraded my 00 to the Euro springs which replace only the front springs. This improved the turn-in in addition to lowering the front. I upgraded the 02 to the Euro sport suspension and it improved the car all around, you can find a lot of posts on that subject
Good luck.

I felt the 02 was much faster in any gear at any speed. Drive them back to back, you will definately notice a difference.

I had a '99 C2 for 3yrs and now have an '02 C2. In day to day driving (i.e., not on the track) I would say there is a difference but not a significant one. The '02 definitely has more torque and the ride is firmer (you feel every expansion joint in the road)
I own a 99C2 and have driven a 02 C2... the feel of the cars is slightly different... 99 has better steering feel (in my opinion) but 02 does pull harder in any gear... especially when your "not on the cam"... the 02 sounds better (different cylinder firing order)... as for pure performance you can be in a higher gear and feel more torque... better engine management system and and extra .2 litres of displacement... the 02 is heavier though... getting a chip for the 99 to re-tune the engine management system is a good idea... 99 was lightest 996 to be produced (c2) extra 15 horse will definitely make a difference..
2002 C2 has cupholders and one hell of a soundsystem though!!!
The interesting thing is if you look at the Car & Driver and Motor Trend Magazine 0-60 test times of the 1999 C2's you see times at around 4.8-4.9 seconds.
The same tests done on the MY2002 and up seem to be in the low 5's. Guess the lighter weight definitely helps...

Porsche website says 0-100kph (0-62) at 5.00, which usually corresponds to about 4.8 0-60. But, bottom line, whatever the numbers say, I have driven both and the 02- just has more usable power everywhere, it feels significantly faster. Just my opinion. Also, just as a side note some of the numbers you may see may be 911 cabs or suto transmissions as soem of the magazines do not tell if the car is auto or man trans or if it is a carrera 2 or 4 or cab. For instance, I think in Car and Driver the car simply says carrera 4 5.5 sec. Is it an auto, cab, who knows??

Just came back from Mid-Ohio.
I drives a 2000 C2 and my friend a 2002 C2. We are both running in the Black run group.
The 02 is definitely faster when comming on to the back straight.
I can see him pull away when I follow him and he would catch me quickly when I lead even with a few car lengths ahead.
Well it seems to me that the numbers show that there is very little to no difference in the two when it comes to 0-60 times from everything that is published. I have not seen anything where a stock MY2002 does any better than 4.8. And that is where the 99's that were tested ended up.
Now the obective opinions could be lots of things. You wonder how much is the "placebo effect". You put someone in a car and tell them it has more horsepower and torque...not a lot more but more and do they REALLY feel it or do they just believe they should?
On the racetrack? That can just come down to ***** and driving skill...
But I think the short of it to answer the question is no SIGNIFICANT difference...just like the one dealer said.
Well not everything has to do with 0-60. 20 hp isn't a large difference, especially when there is an associated weight gain. Nonetheless, this difference could show up in the top end more so than the 0-60. I believe the quarter mile or perhaps 80-120 could be seen to be faster in the 02+. The higher speed/longer distance numbers might show something more than the 0-60 time difference between the two cars.

I think you are correct because as zblue has stated, on the straight the 02 catches his 00 very easily at velocity speeds. I think the car does gain more mid range and high end speeds with the more powerful motor, and because of the weight gain the low end torque gains are offset.
This is part of the reason I gave up on trying to get more power from my 996 00 with all the bolt ons...with all the work I did it only gained 30hp's which places it the same as the new 02+ models.

Mid-range is definately stronger. I am sticking with what I stated before, the 02 is faster at any speed. If you want to find out for yourself, drive them both, just make sure that the 02 has more than break-in miles Good luck.

Car And Driver tested a pre-2002 996 and got 4.8 seconds 0 - 60. They haven't tested a 2002/2003, but estimated 0 - 60 in 4.6. Car And Driver seems to get slightly better times than Motor Trend and Road & Track.
We test drove a 2001, ordered a 2002 C2. The 2002 sounds better and the motor seems more tractable around town - it will pull away a little better without a downshift.
