POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Recently sold a 997 GT3 Clubsport to fund a 991 GT3 due Dec . Already missing not having a special car . Today I've been offered a low mileage white manual cayman R for mid to high 30,s . Buckets and Spyder wheels . I'm tempted to jump into it for the next 4 months .....thoughts . 1) Will it be a huge let down after 997 ? 2) Will it be a hard sell in Dec ? Crystal ball time I know but just after some opinions .

POST 2Original post

1: no it's a better road car than your 997 (well a CAYMAN is), you won't want to part with it. 2: you should make a tidy sum if you are buying mid 30's as most are well over 40k now, there is only 1 for sale at a OPC and that's £45k Edited by mrdemon on Friday 12th September 21:58

POST 3Original post

Agreed - to a point. The R is like a toy compared to a GT3 but in a good way. It will be a laugh a minute and no financial risk.

POST 4Original post

You think a 997 Clubspprt makes a good road car lol.

POST 5Original post

Get the Cayman R, that way when the 991 arrives you'll have enjoyed your appetiser & be ready to be stunned by your main course ;-)

Would love to keep both but likely this will be going up for sale Dec ..... Edited by GT3cs on Saturday 13th September 12:58 Has all the right spec I think Paul so good purchase plus the warranty will still have longevity for the new owner which makes it attractive as the gt3 you sold me has. Cayman R's have a good following so never a bad trade also you have it In the best colour scheme. Have to say having seen your garage both would look awesome if you could possibly keep the two. Great combo

Called into OPC today to have a look at a GT2 RS they have in and checked build status on the GT3 while there . Now confirmed 5/11 so time to start thinking about selling the Cayman R . It's only been 4 weeks but grown really attached to the car . Great Daily Driver and perfect car for the rural area I live in . Going to do some sums over the weekend to see I can find a way to keep both . But just incase I can't there may be a fantastic spec low mileage R coming to market late Oct ,early Nov with 23 month Porsche Warranty. The car is that good OPC have offered what I gave them to have the car back . PM me if anyone is looking .

Andrew at George Mackay brilliant. Would highly recommend them, did a great job selling car for good price quickly. And if the new owner is on here you have got a great well loved car! Did have second thoughts when handing over the keys. But then the racing yellow GT3 arrived.... :-)

Oh and picked up some food at the supermarket on the way home, How can that not be the perfect car for any occasion? OP have you sold the Cayman yet?

Keep it you will def miss it, or sell it now and forget how well the steering feels Befor you get the new one.:-) My mate would buy it but it's about a month to soon for him Great spec car thoug. Rare with xenons but then no leather. Cannot have it all. I miss xenons but have leather , not many cars with every thing. Has it got the SS ? Cheap to fit if not.

Did have second thoughts when handing over the keys. But then the racing yellow GT3 arrived.... :-) Did you buy the racing yellow?

I see Jack has also decided to NOT use his GT3 as a every day car now and has a shorter ratio GTS to use ;-) SO as you can see it's nothing to do with magazines, it's all about my OWN experiences and what I like and how I found the GT3 frustrating, please accept it :-)

ALl these cars have way to long ratio's and while the 987.2 is still too long the speeds are the smallest of the 3 cars, (GT3 and 981) even PDK is too long in 2nd gear, but is about spot on in 3rd. (74mph from memory for a 981 PDK in 2nd)

each to their own but that's how I feel about them and any who does not agree is entitled to have their own opinion :-) All well and good saying find a nice B road but when a nice B Road ave speed is 85mph which most are in the UK if you are on it, then it puts you in no mans land in 3rd gear in a Gt3 and hence why it was sold, the 981 I think I would also find frustrating 118mph in 3rd gear in a 981, where my Spyder an R is 104mph so when you state 104 is equal to 118 mph that is deluded :-) I never bought the R for it's ratios, I bought the R as I was pissed off with the GT3 and then the M3, SO I bought the hard top v of my Spyder as it's about the only car I liked driving. these are pain facts, yuo are stating black is white atm !!!

I don't care any way, I sold my car because that's what I found an issue for my driving on the roads round here. It's as simple as that, other people might like not being able to rev out the mezger engine and the owner ship is enough. I found by the time I got the baby singing in 3rd ie > 6k revs it was time to be on the brakes again and 2nd ran out of puff So you are find yourself driving at cira 5k revs in 3rd gear which to me was very frustrating, so I sold it.

Otherwise I'd still be using it. I have to say that even the Powerkitted 3.8 in the GTS feels pretty lacklustre compared to the GT3. I honestly can't see how anyone would chose a boggo 3.4, 3.6 or 3.8 unit, in any guise, over a GT3 unit. Regardless of gearing.

so you'd be holding the car at 3rd gear at circa 85 leptons on an A/B road indefinitely or are you talking about wanting to overtake something at that speed?

I found the GT3 was hard to rev out in 3rd on a Typical B road, ok on the A43 lol but then that's not my idea of a fun drive out. And of course 30mph over any legal speed is a ban so sort of rules out having a A road play. at cira 85mph you are over 2nd gear and at 5k revs in 3rd, I found it frustrating, it's as simple as that. you would not change down to 2nd for a 75mph bend as an example so then the revs are even lower at 4k, you are now >2k away from any real shove. the cars at it's best 6200rpm to red line. that was a rare site for me. which was about 90mph to 120mph and that just does not work in the UK on B roads. these are est figures of course I had the car 2 years ago , but that's why I sold it and give or take how I found it to drive. Right road right day yes awesome, but that was so rare. the Spyder and R are better B road cars to get the most out of, there are many ex GT3 owners in R now who will agree. Yes if you are a Spa or ring person the GT3 will shine and kill most other things, or on UK tracks like Silverstone. But as many GT3 are sold as "never seen a track" I do wonder why those people then love them so much !!! Yeah I got it wrong. 55mph and around 5300rpm is 2nd gear, not 3rd. In 3rd, you're somewhere around 70mph at 5000rpm. Which still gives good urge if you're not able to change down to 2nd (which runs out to about 85mph).

POST 72Original post

It wasn't intended as a windup mrdemon, a genuine question as driving for prolonged periods at 6k+ rpm within a smallish speed window isn't something I'd consider. Even holding on to a gear at 5k+ rpm when I've been interrupted during an overtake for example (but can see another opportunity) feels mechanically 'unsympathetic' to me To answer your questions yes I do go and drive B roads and no I have not owned a GT3, although from by brief test drive of a 996.1 GT3 I found it to have more torque low down than I was expecting. At the speeds you mention even in my humble Boxster I find it has enough grunt without dropping to low gears to apply power and keep the car balanced through corners - maybe I'm just missing the point (not trying to be controntational, just curious). I do understand your point about long gear ratios though as even my 987.1 will do 70+ in 2nd and 100+ in 3rd.

I do think a GT3 with Sunny D bits would be a good car, PASM has no place on a GT3 imo and the RS final drive is far better for the car in the UK. Shame the 997.2 RS are now £170k other wise I would have tried on with a nice set of 3 ways. I still think the R is the perfect road car for the UK and will prob drive/feel better than this new GT4 unless they can nail the steering feel on it.
