NEED RESPONSE - ANY CLUES AS TO WHAT I HAVE WITH THIS ISSUE.....???
HELP PLEASE... BOXSTER GRIND... ANY CLUES OTHER THAN RUB OR BEARING?? AND HOW IS THE HUB LUG NUT REMOVED WITHOUT REMOVAL OF THE HUB CAP?? Recent purchase: 98' Box. Tracked prior to purchase ( I am third owner). Took off Z rated rears (bald & 1" wider than spec) after pounding TX/OK highway 287 & CO 70 14.5hours to North Denver - did stop for breakfast in Amarillo, Dec 27, 5:30am..... The trek encountered severe thunderstorms north of Ft Worth and snow/ice storm in Dumas TX - slip & slide. We, arrived unscathed in Thornton CO at 2:30pm next day. The adrenaline between TX and CO pumped more than the flat 6. I was back in the saddle..... 72' 914 memories now distant and remote, even my first Porsche flight. My son, on the other hand, just permitted to drive and only .5 hour behind the wheel was not so sure.... is it child's intuition?
Box has about 68,000mi. In the last 5k miles or so, I have a sound (grinding) coming from the right front wheel when powering left turn. It is louder and seemingly more vibrating now. No noise on right turns nor do the wheels wobble when on lift and cant-torqued. I read some postings about this phenomena. Suggestions to replace bearings made sense, especially when tracking was part of the cars history.
I purchased (Pellican Parts) front wheel bearings and had them installed, thinking that the grinding would subside. Mechanic did find other 60k mile things to do:
..Water pump and gasket replacement with coolant refill - never left a trace on garage floor.
..Serpentine drive belt that 'should be replaced at around this time.'
..Brake fluid test and flush.
..Engine air filter was offset and needing replacement
..Cabin air filter replacement
..Fuel filter replacement
..Bosch sparks replaced
..Oil filter and lube - Mobil 1-281 topped off
Interestingly, when the mechanic handed the car over and I handed over the funds, he noted that the noise is gone. Mechanics talk for 'it is repaired', I thought. He did note that it did, in fact, need bearings..... 'Ready to roll.'
I had begun the project myself, then checked my patience oil to find a low read. When I put the hub caps back on (that's about all I did) I for some strange Porsche detailing reason, aligned the Porsche emblem toward the valve stem on each of the front wheels.
The mechanic had the car sitting in the doorway to his small shop, running. Possibly to warm up and trigger a cooling fan, that I also mentioned, when dropping off the car, as having some noise issues - like fan blade against cowling. I was corrected, 'no, the cooling fans are in the front.' As I walked toward the car the fan came on, clanging as I had previously heard..... 'You are right, the fan is in the rear.' Duh#1
I drove about 2 miles, did a couple of turns, the last, back to the mechanics lot. I announced that the grind is still grinding. He was dumbfounded. I took him for a ride. Hello! Test drive not included?! We spun around the lot, heard the grind and then proceeded to inspect the wheel well - 'there's your problem.' We both cast eyes and fingers over apparent tire rub on the wheel well liner. Duh#2
I am still searching for an answer. George, a friend and solid Porsche enthusiast and mechanic and Cal Poly alum, suggests using shoe polish (white) smeared on the wheel liner to see if the car is treading on the liner when power turning left. I haven't polished yet, though this weekend will be the test. I may polish my sneakers while in the mood.
Overall, the Box is a nice drive. Without gauges (another post), it reminds me of childhood go kart days. I drive daily and even with grind and no gauges it is, well we'll see over time..... a nice ride - top up or down.
Any response will help.
Oh, did try rebooting (battery off for 5 minutes) and checking B1 fuse. Still no gauges. And still grinding.
Oh yeah, the hub emblems....... when I got the car back, and before leaving the mechanics lot, I noticed the hub emblems still pointing directly at the valve stems.
Here is the Garage Question of the Day - Did the bearings get replaced? How did the lugs get removed?
