Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I also prefer the wider body of the 4S, but the milage on used porches is a huge factor on the price

Can you afford a new trans, engine, or similar full repair, whatever it takes?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I found no difference in maintenance between the two cars you reference.
Found an 02 C4S at herb chambers ford in Braintree MA. 1 owner, garaged and always serviced. Clean CarFax. Can anyone recommend a place for a PPI ? Are the dealers willing to bring the car to an outside shop to have the PPI done?
Thanks

2002 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S
$34994 | 41602 miles
Body Style: Coupe
Engine: 3.6L H6 24V MPFI DOHC
Exterior Color: Arctic Silver Metallic
Interior Color: Black
Transmission: 6-Speed Manual
Drivetrain: AWD
I need some guidance, I have had 4 Porsche in the past and all coupes but looking to purchase my 1st cab. I'm looking at a 2006 C4S and C2 similar in options except the C4S has navi/full leather and the CS2 does not. The C2S has turbo II wheels. Both cars are black. C2S has less miles by 10K.
My understanding is the C4S is wider but the C2S is faster. Any maintenance issues on the C4S? Does a 2006 C4S really get that much of a premium as a used car?
What would everyone buy and why (pro's vs con's)?
I don't think there is much difference speed-wise between the two. I personally like the wider body of the C4S (I am biased because I had a C4S cab). They make fewer C4S configurations and they have more features in the drivetrain (and hence higher MSRP), which could be a factor in the higher prices. Sounds like the C4S you are looking at has more options as well which will drive the price a bit higher.
I found no difference in maintenance between the two cars you reference. You live in Austin so snow is not a factor in needing AWD. It will come down to which of the two cars you like the best and how well will each of them pass a PPI. I personally prefer the wider body of the C4S, but it is not needed. Make sure you get heated seats in any cab purchase you make. They should not be optional on those cars.
Good luck with it.
If you need AWD for weather, I'd get that. Otherwise, many people (including me) feel that RWD has a lighter and nimbler feel, and is therefore more fun. As far as speed, both are very similar. Also, I think the AWD may have a smaller trunk, but I'll leave it to others to confirm that.
I don't believe the driving feel is that different between the two; especially since both are cabs.
I need to know more about each car to ultimately decide but based on what you have stated so far I would say a lean towards the C2S with lower miles.
But a key to me would be warranties between the two.

Have to really agree on the cab part (actually the RWD and manual parts too
).
My 911 is a cab, and the top down experience is awesome. It's not just about sun and wind. Having the top down connects you with the environment in a way that no coupe or sedan ever could, like picking up variations in air temp, humidity, and local smells as you drive along. You also hear and smell the car more acutely, and having the top down makes the car feel amazingly spacious. All with very little sacrifice of performance.
I am in the process on buying an 03 C4S that has 30K on it one owner all service for $36,500. Talk to the dealer service manager, when they do a PPI they "work" for you and should go through it as if they were CPOing it. Just had mine done yesterday and all it needed was a new cable for the gas door. Since it was in there I'm having them put the LM engineering HD IMS Bearing and a new RMS along with an oil change and new K&N air filter.
The C4S cab is the heaviest of the models. But I wouldn't worry about that. Like others have said, the rear wheel drive models tend to feel more nimble because of the lighter front end, but they are all a blast to drive. Personally, I really like a full leather interior, but that is personal choice. I wouldn't select a car based on wheels, since they can easily be changed out. Good luck in your selection. These are the fun kinds of decisions we get to make.
I am worried about IMS. It has not been changed. Should I see if the Porsche dealer will do it or have an Indy shop do it when I get it home. I have a good local shop
Because you are buying it from them maybe you can work out a deal for a lower rate on the IMS. If not an Indy would probably be much cheaper if you can find a good one.

Mine is being done at the dealer where I'm buying it from. $2400 installed along with the new RMS. No matter where you get it done you should do it for the peace of mind. Takes 2 days. Oh and along with the oil change I'm having them put in a magnetic drain plug.
Go to an Indy. No way trust a dealer. They will sell you a soap box on wheels and say its the best porsche that they have seen. Get a ppi from the well respected indy in your area.
i'd do the c4s. Personally I would not spend the extra on a 997 unless .2 without IMS and with DFI etc. Power wise a 2005 is about the same performance. Plus the widebody looks so much better.
My exact car (except I have 82k miles on mine). I went with the C4S because I wanted the wide body but didn't want tt. No regrets here. I say go for it.

I think MUCH better drive is a bit of an over-statement... I have driven countless 997's, 2 991's and bought a 996 4S... the driving differences in a 997 and a 996 aren't that noticeable IMHO. 996 is a wonderful car, and generally $20k-$25K cheaper used.
I would go with a widebody over a skinny 997 for sure. I just love the look of that big fat booty!
Good call on taking it to an Indy for PPI... hope everything works out with the inspection and sale.

I spent a week driving a 2010 997 C2S in Europe, and I will agree that it has more usable power. It also spools up faster, making rev matching easier than it is in my 996. I think the DFI engine really helps with throttle response. It's really fun to drive. That being said, the overall driving experience was very, very similar to my 996. It felt very familiar. So I would agree with you that it's better, but I would also say that the gap isn't huge.
If I were choosing between a 997 C2S (2009+) or a 996 C4S, I'd choose the 997. However, I don't think that's what the OP is considering...
Don't get me wrong, I love my C4S.

Do I trust the selling Porsche dealer to do the PPI? Or arrange for an Indy shop?
Quote:
Agree, get a PPI done outside of dealer. There are too many horror stories of failures or downright lies from dealers. Just because a Porsche is an exotic expensive brand, dealers of any Make are NOT to be trusted. It is a giant conflict of interest. They just want to sell "it" and get it out the door, "As Is".
Look to PCA members for "referred indy shop and expect to pay ~$250-$300. Insist on written description of items and parts/labor costs. If dealer will not take the car to an indy, maybe sketchy service records or whatever, think about it. Can you afford a new trans, engine, or similar full repair, whatever it takes? I would "pass" and go elsewhere, or possibly offer $10k less for the car.
