Correction: Driver side mirror fell off this morning.. what the ......
apologies.. my phone auto corrected
So I guess there is a first for everything...
I have never had this happen, I took a spirited left turn over some bumpy roads today and my drive side mirror fell off...
I didnt see it falling off, one second it was there, the other it was gone... (only the glass portion fell off)
Anyone know if it is possible to replace just the mirror?
Please share an online source if you know of any..
Thank you
I know for a fact that many other brands are selling just the mirror and it is significantly cheaper than the entire assembly. Most likely the same with
Porsche
. The mirror is just glued. This things happen, don't worry too much. Age, climate, how the car was kept... All this matters. Not a big deal... Keep driving and who needs rear view mirror anyway
That looks fine to me. That's what I see in the rear vision mirror most of the time. Don't even bother...
An auto-dimming mirror will likely be much more difficult and costly to repair/replace. Is it a regular mirror or auto-dimming?
Correction : Upon further inspection during the day, turns out it didn't fall off, it went full smoke and has visible cracks through it.
The fay its fogged tells me I have the auto-dimming version and it either cracked or fused or shorted.
Any ideas ?
If your're going towards replacing the mirror, PM me and I may be able to get a good price for it. Let me know.
I am not sure what would cause the mirror to crack and fog up like that. If it is heated maybe the heating element shorted and the whole thing got hot or the auto dimming function had a problem.
Here is an example of a link for parts if you want to put it back to OEM. Not cheap depending on what kind of mirror you have.
Outside rear view mirror parts link.
There are probably many more sources than this and different prices.
Here is a photo of the position the mirror has to be in in order to separate the mirror glass from the motor (items 4 and 5 ) in the above parts link.
thank you
Looks like mine is auto dimming
That picture looks like the mirror fell off. That is what it looked like on my Mini when the glass fell off.
It appears the mirrors are epoxy glued to the bases and they'll only take so many thousands of heating cycles. You could try to epoxy a replacement glass only and Rockauto.com might be the least expensive. I;ve had them fall off 928's and that's my evaluation of the substrate fastening material.
