Hi all
on my 2009 boxster (3.4 dfi, pdk) i've got a strange issue.
Cold start, when applying more than 30/40% throttle in every gear, while moving, i can hear a very unusual droning noise coming from the engine. I can't feel the usual boxer sound, it's something like having a heavy modified intake, flat deep note. I can also feel a sort of light vibration. The engine revs up, but it feels strange.
Once it's warmed up (just a couple of kilometers are enough), if i turn off the engine and turn it on again the problem goes away.
The problem presented itself randomly, but it's now getting more and more frequent.
No CEL light on.
I also opened the engine bay while keeping it on with the issue, and i can hear a very strange noise, a sort of "flapping" noise.
I was in a Porsche assistance center when i've done this, but they had no clue about the issue.
I had also a transmission new adaptment with the piwis, but nothing changed.
Any clue?
Problem solved, it was the camshaft solenoid of bank 2....
how did you find this? PIWIS?
Even if the CEL was off, there were 2 errors recorded in the ECU. P0018 and P1324, readable with a simple OBD bluetooth interface. Piwis confirmed.
Both codes refers to a wrong intake camshaft position on bank 2.
Moving the solenoid to bank 1 also changed the errors.
It seems that the solenoid was slow to activate the actuator, and the actuator itself a little bit stuck due to burnt oil residuals.
Everything was cleaned up, new solenoid installed and it seems that the issue is solved.
I've now strange troubles with the sport plus, but that's another story.
Thanks for the info!
BTW - which side is bank 1 on our cars?
glad you've found the problem - how much did it cost to repair/replace?
The solenoid is not expensive, 150€+vat, the installation 50€+vat
Considering however that an internal engine cleaning was required and i also had a full maintenance service, the bill was over 1000€
