Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

This is my first post so any help would be fantastic! I've had my CS for just over a year now and she's covered around 10,000 miles. My problem is, after a few months of ownership I noticed that on start up from cold she had an exhaust/engine rattle around 2200 RPM but went off after 5 or so minutes of driving, its always in 1 and 2 gear. Because it didn't last very long I've not bothered with it, however she went into the Porsche dealership last week for a oil drop (done it every 2000 miles from new) now its happening all the time but its at 3000 RPM hot or cold 1st second third and fourth gear! I took her back to Porsche Sheffield (UK) who said "its the pressure relief valve on the oil pump", however Porsche no longer offers anything to fix the problem as they consider the noise to be a Porsche characteristic! As you can imagine I was not happy with that response at all, if I'd wanted a scrap car I'd have bought one not a £55k Porsche! I called the nearby Nottingham dealership, they said yes there was a fix and to bring it in and they'd do it! WOW so one says no, the other yes?? I called Porsche GB, who straight away called Sheffield to find out what was going on as the info they had told me was clearly wrong, there is a fix. Just goes to show, never trust one persons advice! Finally Sheffield replaced the valve today but alas its not worked! I have seen this problem listed on the forum but no one seems to mention if Porsche has actually sorted it or if indeed it is the pressure valve. If anyone out there has had this problem and got it sorted, please help........ PS if yours is doing it when cold rest assured is going to get worse!

POST 2Original post

I had a similar rattle at about 1000-3000 rpms in my CS which i thought was loose catylist media in a header which would nearly go away after the car was warm. Turned out to be a slightly loose 02 sensor. Tightened it up and noise gone!

POST 3Original post

I had the oil pressure release valve issue in my 2005 Boxster. The dealer replaced it with a newer modified one and the problem was much quieter but still there. It would happen after about 3 minutes of driving and at 2000-2500 revs. My Cayman does not exhibit this at all. In fact a few other problems I experienced with the Boxster are not on the Cayman! BTW, the dealer I was with did not know about the newer valve. I had to bring in posts from this site and Renn mar. My Boxster was built in Stuttgart were the cars are suppose to better built. My Cayman has been an angel compaired to the Boxster!

POST 4Original post

I had a similar problem with my 2006 where it would always have a metal rattling sound at 2200 rpm in 1st & 2nd gear when the car was cold. It was a metal heat shield that was causing the noise. I first noticed the noise at 2000 miles after the defective catalytic converters were replaced.

POST 5Original post

I've got the same rattle upon startup. Mine actually goes away after idle settles down (that is when I drive off). I guess I'll have to take a look at it at some point. -Moto

POST 6Original post

Hi, Bit of a long shot given the post date but did you ever get to the bottom of the 3K rattle when warm?
