I replaced the clock spring today, and was able to clear all the codes.
Leading evidence: 'Replace clock spring today, and was able' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check airbag light, i concluded' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

But without any check engine light, check airbag light, I concluded that a short drive might fix my problem.

I check with Durametrics and they believe that the cable should clear the code.

Suggestion
I had to disconnect the bag during some part installs, and immediately after this code presented itself.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 987 that is throwing 8008 and 8007 codes for the steering wheel air bag. I had to disconnect the bag during some part installs, and immediately after this code presented itself.
I tried clearing the code with the Durametric cable, but it immediately returns.
Is this a set of codes that can be only cleared by the dealer? Or did I damage the airbag?
You should be able to reset them - assuming you have a real Durametric and relatively current software (6.x). Maybe the codes are coming back due to a problem with the airbag sensor or seat sensor connections. Or maybe a fuse. What had you disconnected to throw the codes?
I'm pretty sure my Durametric cable is real. I bought it from
Softronic
a few years ago, and it seems to have worked for everything else. I also just downloaded a fresh copy of the software, so I don't think that is it.
The airbag was disconnect when the power steering rack was removed. And by disconnected I mean, the steering wheel was spun too many times around and the clip came out. This is why I'm not sure if the air bag was damaged or not.
Nothing appears to be broken on the bag, all connectors look good.
I'm searched, and there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer regarding the codes. Some people say you need to go to the dealer, while others say you don't. I was hoping someone who has had these codes can confirm if they could clear with the Durametric cable or if they needed to go to the dealer.
No doubt then that the cable is legit. Just checking all bases.
I've cleared airbag codes before, but I don't remember the code number. Likely not the same cause as yours. I had the console out and started the engine. Maybe someone has come across the exact same one(s) as you. But I would be surprised if Durametric can't clear them. Have you run a test on the airbag controller?
It sounds like the cable harness wires wrapped around a steering component and was ripped loose at the connector. That could damage the connector or the seating of the wires leading to it.
After clearing the codes, I only ran the "short" test to see if they persisted.
I'll double check and see if there is another test to run on the airbag system.
Thanks!
I check with Durametrics and they believe that the cable should clear the code.
As a result, I'm ordering a new airbag wiring harness. Hopefully this fixes the problem. There are three connections on the airbag, two of them appear to be triggers and I'm not sure what the last one is; possibly the horn.
Good luck. As much as I detest taking my car to a dealer, airbags are pretty finicky and a primary safety feature. I think I'd make an exception and let the dealer trouble-shoot it.
You didn't mention what yr your's is but here's a wiring diagram for
987.1
. I imagine it is very similar for a
987.2
.

Yes it is a 2007.
I actually just spoke with a
Porsche
shop in Ohio, Olen Motorsports. They aren't anywhere near where I am located; California. But the owner seems to think the clock spring cable was snapped when the wheel was spun to far. It seems relatively easy to replace. Might pick one of those up as well.
Down the rabbit hole I go. Where I end up? Probably at the dealership... :hilarious:
ANy body shop with a Snap On scan tool can reset that and turn it off. After some paint work, I had air bag codes. I went back to the shop and it took a while but they were able to get it. Maybe you have a body shop close by ??
I have a hunch the clock spring hypothesis is correct.
The clock spring sits right behind the steering wheel, so it shouldn't be too difficult. I've already ordered a used unit from a seller on ebay and will give it a shot this weekend.
Delayed update - Didn't have long and thin enough torx screw drivers to remove the steering column covers
Confirmed.
I replaced the clock spring today, and was able to clear all the codes. I had some strange codes after the install, that cleared after a short 20 min drive; C140, C102, C15X? (didn't write them down).
For about 5 mins, I was cursing in the garage thinking that I had done something wrong. I was racking my brain because the clock spring is actually very easy to remove and reinstall. There is only 1 connector clip, the other connectors slide in and slide out with the entire clock spring.
But without any check engine light, check airbag light, I concluded that a short drive might fix my problem. Lucky for me it did, and I know have my killer autox machine back. This thing is an animal and I love driving it!
