hello all
i have been searching on here for any information concerning the convertible top on my 2006 987 boxster s
being true to the manual i have not operated the top under 60 degrees, however i got it about 5 months ago with 28k on the od so who knows with the pervious owners did
anyway, about a month ago, just before it started to get cooler here in the chantilly va area, i heard a pop!
i noticed that that the passanger side frame tuck was no longer happening, meaning the top was lapping outside the frame, which i might add increased wind noise a good bit
on inspection i noticed that the top was more loose in that area so i suspect there is a strap or something that has given way
does anyone know of an easy fix?
thanks!
otto
Yes, there is a piece of elastic that pulls the sides of the top into place so they slip into the channel. You can find it if you open the top about half-way. The elastic on my 05 has slits in it and it is anchored to a frame member with a torx screw and a washer. Once the screw is removed, you can slip the elastic to the outside and do something - I used a stapler to attach a new stronger piece of elastic. That worked for about 18 months, but now it is shot again. I am currently addressing this myself, trying to come up with a more permanent solution.
If you heard a pop, it's most likely a push rod. I usually have the shop replace mine.
I had that happen to my 08 when my wife didn't fully unlatch the top before hitting the top down button. It snapped a small plastic ball joint which I was able to purchase on ebay and fix myself. You can do a search for "Boxster convertible top ball joint" and find replacement parts. Keep us informed on your progress and good luck. Ken
As others have pointed out on other threads, if you need to replace the ball joint, and you go aftermarket and DIY, make sure you are getting plastic replacement parts and not metal. Some aftermarket parts are advertising metal as being stronger and will not break etc... this is true but bad. The part is designed to break to protect the motor that operates the top. If something is not working properly, the ball joint snaps before the motor can burn out trying to move the obstruction. Only replace with OEM or aftermaket parts that are plastic as designed.
Will you let us know how you fix it? Mine is bad too, i just lean over and tuck it in as the top is going up. My elastic is no longer working at all.
it's not very scientific, but I just doubled up the elastic and put a safety pin through it to make it shorter. I know that's just a temporary fix, but it has been working for about six months now.
If not the rod, then u'd have the same problem I had a month ago. But I had it on both sides. The solution was to change the elastic on the right side, and tighten the one on the left side!
I've got a 2010 Boxster that needed this. I found various other fixes (including unscrewing the screw and pulling the elastic strap tighter using an existing hole — And replacing the elastic by sewing in another piece). I can tell you that there is almost no room to work without taking a bunch of other things apart. So I bailed on unscrewing the screw. I had to do this 1 handed and so I placed a small LED headlamp in the cavity because it's super hard to see anything as the Boxster top does of good job of blocking out all light. I ran the zip tie through rear most (reachable ) hole in the elastic, then ran the other end through a hole 5 spaces further. I zipped the tie to about the size of a half dollar and then tested the tension to see if it would track. I figured I could make it tighter later if need be. It tracked into edging so I snipped the end off and repeated the process. Good luck to all!
Here's a recent thread that addresses a couple of fixes.
