Suggestion

CV joints can be cleaned, re-lubricated, and new boots installed as I did on the front of my 911C4, or you might be able to purchase remanufactured axle assembly, or of course new.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Recently I have felt a weird noise/vibration coming from the back. It happen on full lock turns to the left side and I will feel the shudder in the rear right section of the car. I dont feel anything when i go full lock turns right. My guess is that it might be a wheel bearing or something like that. Was wondering if anyone has felt something similar to this or not.

POST 2Original post

" Noise when Reversing - If the steering wheel is close to or all the way to the steering lock the power steering pump may push against the lock and make a “clunking” noise which is normal. This can also be exacerbated by cold weather making the tires less pliable." Taken from the sticky at the top, sounds like the issues.

POST 3Original post

Failing CV joints usually make noise/vibration when forced to flex; sometimes a popping or clicking type noise. Another source could be a failing wheel bearing. Might be on any corner so careful test/analysis is advised. A quick first check would be to examine the boot on both joints on both left and right axles. CV joints can be cleaned, re-lubricated, and new boots installed as I did on the front of my 911C4, or you might be able to purchase remanufactured axle assembly, or of course new. Wheel bearings are sealed units on these cars so only option would be to replace when bad. Normally requires removing strut, or at least the upright, and a hydraulic press. However, there is also a special tool that can be used w/o removing strut. Somewhere I read a post about a homemade version. Basically some plates and collars with a large threaded rod. Can first press out the old and then pull in the new. Expense would offset all the labor.

POST 4Original post

Thanks for the reply! So I am leaning towards it being the CV joint. Does it make sense that in a really tight turn going about 30mph that it would feel like the right rear would feel like it is almost hopping?

POST 5Original post

How bout some info on your ride? Year, mileage, etc?

POST 6Original post

When I experienced a bad cv, it only made noise on low speed turns. Worse turning one direction than the other, and the sharper the corner. The noise was a clicking/ popping sound. There was some light vibration. Btw I'm at Austin attending US Formula 1 grand Prix. Fortunately w/o last year's rain and floods.

POST 7Original post

When a CV joint is worn, it usually makes it's noises regardless of which direction you are turning on a RWD. It is common on FWD for the symptom to only occur during a right or left turn because the angle of turn is greater on the inside tire. On RWD it is rare that a rear CV joint would only do it on a left turn and not a right turn. Most noises from the rear that only occur during hard full lock turns are caused by failed wheel bearings, strut mounts or a bad differential. LSD's are notorious for the symptoms that you described. A failed wheel bearing would be the first place that I would look. Raise the car, remove the tire/wheel, then see if there is any vertical movement when pressing up and down on the axle. Any felt looseness or visible movement means the bearing is worn and must be replaced.

POST 8Original post

could it be a need to change the rear axle/diff oil? oh, and also just check the brake discs and callipers if there is any small debris or pebbles stuck there.
