POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, I have been meaning to document the process of this build for 8 months now after purchasing a 1976 914 2.0 fuel injected car as a base. This is my 3rd 914, I keep gravitating back to them!! This car was imported into WA in the early 1980s and was converted to RHD and remained with the one owner since then. It had a massive file with even the sales documentation when first purchased in the US, and a massive box of spares that I shoehorned into the front boot! I bought this car sight unseen on the Trading Post (of all places), flew to Armidale NNSW and drove the car home to Melbourne. It was quite the trip, made all the more special when Apple Maps took me across 3x causeways that were underwater, with one of them requiring a fair bow wave to get through and the feeling of losing traction with the ground on that particular crossing.... After a quick change of underwear, the journey continued and it didn't miss a beat I drove it for approximately a year whilst I planned the build and commenced the purchasing of the required parts, with most unfortunately coming from the U.S. and incurring horrendous freight and currency conversion costs This is the starting photo tucked up in the garage at home And this the absolute inspiration !! The first step was the tear down... I then rolled her out into the lane way and stripped the paint off, not worrying about the guards as these are to be removed in favour of the steel GT flares! One of my first purchases from the U.S. was a set of the required 15x 7" and 8" fuchs. This was them when they landed- I then set about the process of restoration of the rims, a fairly involved process but very worthwhile- you can't beat a set of anodised Fuchs on an early P-car The next step was to change from the VW 4 stud hubs to the Porsche 5 stud hubs as per the 914/6 build, so off she went- ...and voila (albeit that the rears were rubbing in the narrow body guise)! So off to the next stage- the steel flares from Auto Atlanta, a necessity for the true GT build The motor has now recently been dropped in preparation for the 6 cylinder P motor (still to be finalised)- The later model 914s had the horrendous and terribly heavy impact bumpers which needed to be removed and backdated to the earlier steel variety for the build. I located these locally (and the bumper tops) and had the bumpers chrome stripped and copper plated ready for when they will be painted black Then the cutting of the front for the oil cooler set up from Patrick's Motorsports- I gritted my teeth when taking to it with the grinder. The first cut was in the spare wheel section, slowly, slowly...- And then the front section... Next job is the through bonnet fuel filler, more cutting.... Cheers Craig

POST 3Original post

Hi crsedge, looking forward to this build with interest. Newbie question, why the copper plating? cheers

POST 4Original post

Thanks for sharing this build, please keep the content and updates coming. Have you tackled a lot of the tasks yourself and on previous builds or are you picking up new skills as you go along?

Hi Asyd, Copper was the finish recommended by the bumper restorers, providing the best surface for the paint to adhere to the steel bumper. Cheers Craig Hi Poli84, I have been more hands-on with this build than previous P restos so am picking up some new skills, which I have been really enjoying. I will however not be tackling everything, would prefer to leave the more difficult tasks to the professionals from a quality finish and time availability perspective! Cheers Craig Thanks Raf!

Awesome, Craig. It looks like we're both under the pump now for Australia Day.... Regarding your 2.0L engine, was it good before you took it out? I saw that you drove from NSW without any issues. I have no idea what mine's like as it's been sitting untouched for so long. I may be looking for a backup plan if I find out that mine's either toast or too costly to rebuild.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Luke. Yes motor in excellent condition, it was in the car up until about 4 weeks ago with the car driven semi-regularly on club rego right up until the build commenced. It didn't miss a beat, it was only removed because of my desire to build a sympathetic 914/6 GT and needing a 6 cylinder to do so!

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So some updates First update is the installation of the GT front bonnet pins- this surprisingly took some time to get them in the correct positions, drill, and then cut, fashion and weld the supports in place for each pin- As part of this work, one of the small three areas in the whole car affected by rust had to be repaired- this was part of the frame surrounding the front right headlight- The offending piece was cut out... ...and new metal fashioned into place. You can see the corner section fashioned to hold the bonnet pin in this photo- Good as gold Next was the through bonnet fuel filler, one of my favourite parts of a 914/6 GT build.... ... and viola!

POST 23Original post

Wow your 914 looks awesome. I am wondering if you restored the Fuchs yourself or got them done and if so by who. They look fantastic. I have a set on my 911 that need a resto and I’m going through the process of trying to strip and polish them myself and then get them anodised or just try and find someone to do the complete job. The only thing I know is that I want the finished product to look like yours.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 272981

Thanks I went through the process of undertaking all the ground work myself- blasting, sanding any scrapes scrapes, took it to the polishers, then to Melbourne Anodising. I then taped each wheel up myself and got a painter to paint them I have done this a few times now so am becoming a mini-expert

POST 25Original post

Thanks for the info. That exactly what I needed to know. I’m pretty handy and not afraid of some elbow grease so I think I’ll follow your lead. If they come half as good as yours I’ll be a happy man. Thanks again for your help.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Raf & Raven, Sorry, it has been a while since an update due to the craziness of life getting in the way, as we all face! The  steel bumper has been modified to accept the oil cooler grill. I decided to remain with steel rather than buy a fibreglass replacement from overseas due to the additional strength offered in any impact (the ex-paramedic in me ? ). This included welding an extra section underneath the cut out to encase the grill The steel valance panel also had to be cut to fit.... .... to give the final look of the below (Bumper to be painted black)- Battery cut off switch and fire extinguisher point fitted up I have also purchased a fresh 2.2... The motor will be installed prior to final paint to avoid any potential scratches to the paint work (given the mechanic will need to drape themselves over the side of the car for access). I have purchased 914/6 heat exchangers, tinware, and engine mounts from the U.S. which are due in the coming days..... I have also purchased a secondhand exhaust suitable for a GT replica which will be cleaned up (insert more smiles here) Next tasks are flare extensions on the rocker panels and rear valance panels to match seamlessly with the steel flares! Cheers Craig

POST 40 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow, I didn't realise how long it has been since my last update, forgive me father for I have sinned.... 🙉 Progress has been slow, but the good news is that I plan to push through to completion post 1 July this year!! So, flare extensions on the rocker panels are now completed. I bought some ready made from a supplier overseas but as these things go significant work was required to shape to match the steel GT fender flares! I am however really happy with the result.. Next has been the fitment of the BF Torino Rallye ST seats, needing to remove the previous seat mounts and weld in new support. These are going to look great with the period harnesses Next tasks- Oil cooler lines, engine  mount fitment, GT roll bar hoop installation, chassis stiffening kit and valance panel flares. Then epoxy- hooray!!

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A bit more work on her today 😎 Engine mount for the P motor now in place Oil cooler lines fitted in place in front boot area, into cabin and out under rocker panels. Next is to carry them through to rear wheel well and into engine bay, as per the path for GTs 👍 The chassis stiffening kit was also tacked into place, ready for putting onto the hoist and welding 👍

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It has been quite a while since my last update. Period correct roll bar created with seats now in position. Roll bar currently at the powder coaters Bracket for rear rubber bumper top installed- this wasn’t present given the car started as a later model impact bumper 914 914/6 GT centre fuel gauge now in position. This will be flush with dashboard and covered with new dashboard basketweave material Footwell oil cooler line cover created- the front oil cooler lines actually pass from the front through the cabin floor to travel underneath the sill panels on their way to the engine

POST 43 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Final prep for epoxy 👍 Then the car was given the epoxy treatment yesterday 👍 Hoping to get to paint mid-late Jan

I have been contacted by a local with a 914/6 RHD who is interested in selling it.  I will know more tomorrow about the car and its origins. It looks to be in very good condition. A couple of quick questions.  Were there any original RHD and as I suspect, all were converted here.  If an engine conversion was done to a flat 6, was the 2.7 commonly used?

POST 56Original post

Quotes source post: 324536

Interested, let me know details please.

POST 58Original post

Quotes source post: 324536

914s and 914-6s were never made in factory RHD, all were LHD. Crayford in the UK did RHD conversions to cars direct from the factory, but that's where my knowledge stops. If RHD conversions have been/are being done in Australia, I don't know by whom. I hope that helps a little bit.

POST 59Original post

@crsedge question, slightly out of sequence for your build but... when converting a 914/4 to a 914/6 what happens with the transaxle? When using a, say a 2.7 motor from a 911 in the rear mounted position how do you get the transaxle to work in a mid engine layout? Do you flip the transaxle upside down? What was the factory 914/6 solution? shift linkage, structural supports, cutting & bending metal, rear suspension my mind boggles at getting it to fit neatly. I'm sure there are a few options ways on doing things. fantastic build by the way!

POST 60Original post

POST 61 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, a year has passed since when I stated I hoped to have paint on my 914/6 GT project….. 🤪 As we know, COVID interacting with life has thrown everyone’s personal timelines into havoc. Combine that with my restorer changing business premises and well here we are…. Progress certainly hasn’t stopped over the past 12 months, it is amazing the amount of work that has occurred which won’t be visible to those looking at the final product (or even these photos)! This includes final prep for the front and rear flared valance panels, bumpers and flared scuttle panels. I think this is something that everyone who has embarked on a major build will well and truly understand!! Anyhoo, I now have paint on the undersides of front and rear bonnets, boot, froot and the engine bay! Next is stoneguard under the wheel arches and more bursts of sunflower yellow paint on top of the stoneguard! The main paint treatment for the body will not occur until the motor and gearbox are installed- this is scheduled to commence in the next 2 weeks 😎 Some photos of progress to-date!

POST 62Original post

Love it when the paint goes on , it is a major milestone ................awesome build

POST 64 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Stone guard and paint now applied to wheel arches. Plus a few other shots of the painted areas. Next is reinstating the wiring harness, paint the fuel tank and refit the oil cooler radiator and associated hoses before being shipped off for the engine/gearbox installation 😎

POST 73 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has been a long time since my last post with an update. Given how long this build has taken, I hit a patch where I started thinking about whether I had it in me to complete the journey. I don’t think I am the only one who has encountered those dark thoughts. After much to-ing and fro-ing, I decided to maintain the path. All flat panels are now painted in multiple coats of glorious Sunflower Yellow and clear coat. As is the body too. Unfortunately some of the photos don’t do full justice to the colour due to the fluro lights in the booth. Am stoked with the progress and near-end body product, am hoping a couple of weeks to go and she will return to me to be put back together in my shed. Then the motor and gearbox installed, followed by the interior. So still some way off before she hits the road again. But I am heartened by the progress 😎

It has now changed custodians to @DJM to finish her off 😎

POST 79Original post

Ok, thanks Craig.  Hopefully an update will be forthcoming sometime...

It’s moving along.  I sent it to Chequered Flag to get them to cut a hatch in the firewall to provide access to the fan belt from the cabin (my mechanic recommended otherwise it’s engine oit to change he a fan belt 😬 ).  I also got them to remove the cage and lower the seats so I can fit in. Nick Cascone sourced and is about to start building an engine for it now - 3.0SC engine, new JE 10.5:1 pistons, ITBs and Motec is the plan.  I’ve ordered a Rennline shifter, tangerine racing shift rod and bushings from the states to improve the shift.  Auto elec lined up.  Nick will put the car together for me after the engine is built (given I am too busy and severely lacking competence at car building).  Nick believes it should punch out circa 280hp which should be lively given how small and light it is. I'm not on here a lot but I’ll definitely post up some info and photos as it comes together. Hopefully on the road under club reg later this year.  If I can get to Art Neun in November that’d be cool.

POST 81Original post

A pity that Craig had to relinquish the project but good to hear you've picked it up. Sounds to me like this is to be purely a road car (little or no competition?) if the cage is coming out - or is it going back after the seats are sorted? A service hatch for the fan belt is absolutely essential - I'm surprised that ppl build them without it. I presume you have a side-shift 901 transmission?  If it's a tail shifter, change it ASAP.  I have used both factory and Rennline shifters and slightly prefer the factory shifter - but there's not much in it. I am about to resurrect mine which has been sat in the shed for too long after an argument with a Tasmanian mountain a few years back. Good luck with the project.

Side shift 901. With the cage in the car I could not get the seats back far enough to be comfortable nor fit the headrests.  So the cage will remain out in my ownership.  No competition planned, more of a weekender, cars and coffee kinda deal.  I have a GT4RS for track driving.  I just liked the idea of a pigeon pair - early and late mid engined Porsches.  I might be tempted to do a hillclimb in it, we’ll see how it drives when complete.

POST 83Original post

That'll work.  The factory half-cage didn't do much anyway.  A fundamental weakness is lack of torsional rigidity which can only really be fixed with a full cage picking up the rear suspension and extending to the front firewall.  Some builders weld extra plates onto the longs but I can't see that being very effective.  Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how it turns out...

POST 84Original post

It has the GT chassis stiffening bits but can’t see that doing much torsionally. i assume @crsedge used something like this https://pmbperformance.com/products/914-6-gt-chassis-stiffening-kit

Yes but can't recall if the PMB version.

The removable targa roof panel fits in the rear trunk, while also giving the joy of open-air motoring but also the safety, noise reduction, and at least some of the rigidity of a coupe. The 914 boasted torsional stiffness equal to the contemporary 911 coupe and higher than that of the equivalent 911 Targa. https://www.hagerty.com/media/market-trends/hagerty-insider/the-914-is-no-longer-porsches-ugly-duckling/

POST 87Original post

Interesting.  I wonder what the source of that info is? - i've never seen it quoted anywhere and I find it hard to believe! - the 914 wasn't nick-named the 'Flexi-flyer' for nothing... Anyway, for a non-competition car its irrelevant.

POST 88Original post

A quick update. The 3.0 SC engine has been stripped and the bits are back from machine shop.  Nick Cascone has most of the new parts he needs and the engine build will start very soon.  JE 10.4:1 pistons, re-Nikasil’d barrels, reco heads, GE60 cams etc.  I’m quickly learning that Porsche bits add up fast…… 🤑 .  Oh well, I’m “half pregnant” now so we’ll plough on. PMO Injection ordered.  Not quite as sexy as AT Power or Jenvey ITBs but a few grand cheaper and, in a 914, they are not really on show so I was happy to bank that saving. Firewall hatch completed, seating position now sorted with cage removed.  Rennline shifter and tangerine racing shift rod received. Hopefully, it’ll be on road by year’s end or at least before the end of summer 🤞🏻

POST 89Original post

A quick update - engine build is behind schedule but was part assembled pre Xmas.  Nick Cascone assured me he would work on it while he is otherwise quiet over the Xmas break and hoped to have it finished. I’ve left him alone but I’ll call in next week, hope to see it all buttoned up.  Looking forward to sending him the car ASAP and starting on the engine install.  Won’t be on the road this summer…. 🤷‍♂️ . A few pics below - SC engine we started from, some nice coil on plug and crank trigger gismos, access hatch, some engine bits and  parked patiently next to 4RS.

POST 92Original post

I dropped my 4RS to Nick Cascone his morning.  He has the 914/6 engine back from the wiring guys (Proloom) where it had an engine harness built and Motec ECU and sensors ordered.  Nick already built the gearbox and has the clutch.  New high amp alternator ordered. Next to assemble motor and box and fit the tin ware.  We agreed I will send the car to Nick in June before I head away on a trip and he’ll work on getting it installed.  Finally inching closer……..never had a car built before so it’s been a learning curve…..think of a number and a timeframe and double it, pretty much 🤷‍♂️

POST 93Original post

It’s in great hands. Looking forward to seeing it being put back together!

POST 94Original post

Let’s get this show on the road 💪🏻 . Car was shipped to Cascone on Thursday to start the assembly process. I’m travelling 8 of the next 12 weeks so hopefully late Sept, when we’re back, it’ll be well progressed.  Plan is to drive it out of there on Club Reg, ready for targa top summer 🤞 .

POST 95Original post

Called into Cascone yesterday, he is about ready to bolt up the gearbox after new alternator, balanced flywheel and tinware was installed.  Car is up on the hoist and we’re now working through options for brakes and suspension.  It is also apparent that there’s a fair bit to be done in the engine bay before the engine can be installed.  Incomplete brake lines, oil line ends have no fittings for the engine, trying to work out where the various lines and cables need to be routed, how to get the fuel lines in to the tunnel etc.  working on 914s is all new to Nick so he’s trying to work it out as he goes.  The underside of the chassis is pretty filthy so he’ll do his best to degrease and pressure wash, be a shame to slot that pristine engine into a dirty bay.

No but good tip, thanks.   Getting a price from Ice Blast Co who Nick knows and recommends 👍

POST 98Original post

the last piece of the puzzle is the suspension and brake setup.  Obviously with a fruity motor, it needs a decent upgrade.  Isaac at PMB in the states has been fantastic providing heaps of advice (including which of their products to buy!).  I’m getting this gear priced up which seems like the right package to go with.  I haven’t spared any expense on engine and gearbox so I’m not about to cut corners and run with inferior or standard components.  I really don’t want to get spat off the road…… 😬 I suspect there’s not a lot of 914 build experience on here but any further expert opinion would be appreciated while I wait on the pricing for this package. https://pmbperformance.com/products/pmbs-exclusive-porsche-914-strengthened-rear-trailing-arm-set?srsltid=AfmBOoq7pAASHgoWUtQTIOJdxfRuhiH8dlnxO4ZVzBVSuUlSfz-E2ToL https://pmbperformance.com/products/am-caliper-the-ultimate-m-caliper-up-grade?srsltid=AfmBOooHNEcLo-laxn73p-h1mrSWTGVlPhrxCDRzlTgli8iRcuHXL8N8 https://pmbperformance.com/products/reproduction-porsche-914-6-or-914-6-gt-rear-caliper-set-with-dual-bleeders?srsltid=AfmBOopHnCIhEEUYGafZTO5no7r5beNr4pbaPUaRX3d8eNASDpS17QVI https://groundcontrolstore.com/collections/914

The guy that bought my car had it done and I went around to have a look while it was being cleaned. Very impressed, even the old plastics came up looking brand new. he commented that the underneath looked like it had done under 10000ks one done. It had done over 100.

POST 100Original post

Blasted clean 👍 .  Now for the “would you like fries with that”…….several areas needed some attention so I’ve got them tidying up and giving it a lick of paint underneath.  Some cool cars being restored in their shop 😮 Meanwhile, Nick Cascone has opted not to continue with the project.  Frustrating but no point flogging a dead horse.  Darren at Auto Coupe was recommended to me by several people and I’ve been to see him and he’s agreed to take it on later in the year.  Parts stored in my trailer for now 🤷‍♂️

POST 101Original post

Just catching up on this project. That’s going to be a rewarding first drive!

POST 102Original post

Painted underneath, just the front suspension arms to go satin black then it’s done

POST 103 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looks amazing, well done Doug 😎

POST 104Original post

Now it looks finished 👍 Car will come back home today to be stored for now. Hopefully, when I return from 6 weeks travel, Darren at Auto Coupe might be able to lock into a start date.  Most of the bits are now in hand so I just want it finished!  Looking forward to Darren’s involvement, he seems very calm and measured, has guys to help get the work done and has some very nice cars he is working on.  Feels like the right guy to finish it well 🤞

POST 105Original post

Some might say it’s prettier underneath than on top now 🤭

POST 106Original post

Righto, it's been a while since the last update.  As of August 2025, Nick Cascone decided he was out, Darren at Auto Coupe agreed he'd take it on from around October.  I was away Aug/Sept and called when I got back and it was evident Darren remained snowed under and, while keen, he wouldn't be able to make a start until the New Year. I then happened upon some factory hard oil lines (thanks @crsedge for the tip and @KERMIT ).  Ken was a lovely fella, been there, done it and he introduced me to Adrian at Hartech in Mordialloc who built his 914/6 and maybe one other.  We got chatting and ultimately, Adrian penciled me in for Feb '26 to put the car together.  Meanwhile, Darren at AutoCoupe confirmed he'd be available no sooner than about Feb so I decided to run with Hartech.  Closer to home, prior experience building 914/6s as well as RWC in house and an Engineering link with prior success....plus a date in the diary which was a first! Adrian unfortunately had to shunt me back to 2 March for medical reasons (understandable) but we're closer than ever.......!  I hope to be sending him the car and bits next Monday, im calling tomorrow hoping for good news. I now have new 3.2 short stroke ITB/Motec engine, refurb 901 gearbox & LSD plus a pile of suspension & brake components , strengthened trailing arms, rear suspension and brakes and various bits and bobs to  finally start the assembly. I hope to have some further updates soon.....mid year RWC and club reg would be nice.  A 6 month project completed in 2.5 years, I'm slowly learning what a car build entails.......ugh. I also have an FD RX7 track rat in the paint shop concurrently, a similarly frustrating process albeit not as lengthy.

POST 107Original post

Sounds like a typical timeline. Just multiply what you think it will take * 5. 😉 Glad it's looking closer, but from experience with custom work done in a small workshop i'd be tempering my excitement till they give me THE call and not an update. I had a custom engine build after blowing it up at Winton. That was through Covid mind you, but it took 4 years! New idler pulley belt snapped after 5 months of fun and the car was off the road another 15 months, even though we dodged the bullet and there was no internal damage!

Looking forward to seeing the mechanicals come together Doug as you head to the finish line. The actual project started in late 2017 (as per the first post in this thread under my former ownership)- unfortunately this is a proof point that projects do take time and that unexpected delays can occur...

POST 109Original post

I can attest to that! The time and $$ is definitely WORTH IT!! Especially when you are fanging cough cruising down the freeway

I’ve cut and pasted the PFA thread into a Word document to tuck away for future reference so I had a re read over it all in recent days. Quite the journey the old girl has been on.  9 years! I can now confirm a flat bed truck is booked for mid morning on after Hartech confirmed he’s good to go.  I brought the trailer full of engine, gearbox and bits home tonight and tucked up in the garage.  So we’ll convoy to Hartech Monday to get the ball rolling 💪🏻 a momentous occasion.

POST 112Original post

Latest update. Hartech are progressing.  Cabin wiring sorted, gauges installed, stiffened trailing arms and rear coilovers installed.  Unfortunately needs to go to the body shop to have some underbody crap rectified - rust painted over in engine bay, left to right conversion is missing the stiffening under the brake pedal and around the master cylinder, tunnel stops short of the firewall.   Having come this far, we’re not cutting corners now but more $$ and more time before engine can be installed.  Hopefully the last of the surprises and we can push to completion later this year 😩
