I'd love an RS from the want factor of lusting after them ever since the 996 version, I'd also love a 991.2 non RS for the newer car and 'better' engine but not enough to get into finance over, I've retro fitted CarPlay and rear box bypass pipe to mine and absolutely love the thing.

I might struggle to find another as clean but with a huge house project on the go and nowhere safe to leave it I thought it would make sense to sell and get into a .2 manual or .1RS once the house is done.

The market changed with the gen 2 GT3 in that most buyers new and used demand(ed)ceramics as per the 991.1 GT3 RS possibly because the performance was on a par and obviously resale values of the gen 2 are quite a bit higher.

My 2021 model GT4 was c £75k basic new and c £6k for ceramics being similar cost to the GT3 is imo ott proportionate to the GT4s cost and minimal benefit they give relative to performance and this is reflected in used market prices..

Was going to sell my E92 to make buying the GT3 a bit easier, had a good offer last Oct/Nov but its a very clean low mileage car and if I took the notion of buying another at a later time I know this car would set the benchmark and the next would have a lot to live up to, I've had it from 6k miles, and the CSL I've had from it was 2yrs old so replacing either would be no easy task.

I could be wrong, but after extensive (internet!) research through how the 10 year warranty came about (mainly on Renlist) I believe it is along the lines of 'if the finger follower wear is at fault Porsche will replace the engine, up to 10 years or xx K miles from date of registration'

My plan is long term keeper, Spa/Ring trips, NC500, first and maybe only mod would be to change suspension, the place who fitted the suspension to my CSL showed me suspension they'd fitted to a 997GT2 from Greece, it would be complete over kill for me but it felt good.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Posted the below on another forum and was pointed this direction... Does anyone know of any 991.1 GT3’s for sale? Last year’s plan was to purchase a 991.2 GT3 but due to an unfortunate setback that plan was postponed, since then I’ve looked at .1’s with new eyes and I’m seriously considering buying one. Essentials are clubsport and PCCB’s.

POST 2Original post

I’ve been looking at 991.1 and 991.2 GT3s for the last few months and the places I’ve been watching are the classifieds here, the OPC approved used website and Auto Trader. In addition, maybe keep an eye on the independent Porsche specialists such as RPM Technik, JZM and the like, there are a few although they would generally advertise on here. If you want to get ahead of the curve maybe phone a few of the independents and give them your details for when something comes in? Good luck with the search! Top lurking btw!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Have been doing just that. There is a .1 currently advertised that I’d flight booked to go view when I sensed something wasn’t right and asked for a detailed video… let’s say I didn’t board the flight. Have you viewed any? What’s your thoughts on .1 vs .2?

POST 4Original post

Problem is as usual each year all the best spec cars get snapped up into Spring this explains why there are no CS and ceramic braked 991.1 GT3s left in the OPC network and a rapidly dwindling number of 991.2s. You might have to consider a steel braked car the brakes have a less critical affect on value on the gen 1 v the gen 2. Having owned both gens from new (manual gen 2) the gen 2 is easily worth the extra ££ premium not just for the newer car and far superior engine either but the gen 1 is still a great package despite the engine issues. If you want manual (and its one of Porsches finest gearboxes along with the GT4) there is only one option obviously.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I’ve spoken to two people who have had both 991.1 and .2 GT3’s and both of them said they prefer the engine in the .1? Both also said if it wasn’t for the engine concerns they’d have a .1 as it felt… one said racier, the other raw, what’s your thoughts on that having had both? Both also said if it wasn’t for the engine concerns they’d have a .1 as it felt… one said racier, the other raw, what’s your thoughts on that having had both? As mentioned above call the independents as they will have a list of cars coming in for sale or they can approach people to buy. I sold my .1 CS through RPM in Feb https://rpmtechnik.co.uk/porsche-sales/vehicle/991... Im looking to get into a .2 Manual next hence the sale, Greg at RPM told me when I want one let him know as he has a list of clients who's cars are not advertised but for the right price will sell. The .1 feels racier to me as you can hear the fly heel 'chunter' on ideal where as the .2 is quite inside on idle. I have tracked a .2 and the engine has slightly more low down torque and the intake noise is a lot louder inside - the rest for me is marginal. Apple car play on the .2 is nice for EU road trips but hardly a decision maker. PCCB wasn't a deal breaker when I was buying and most tend to swap the PCCBs out if they track a lot anyway - I never felt I needed more brakes when driving mine however the PCCBS are amazing.

POST 7Original post

Depends largely what you are using the GT3 for because the power and torque drop off on the gen 1 is far greater than for the gen 2 approaching the 9k red line. Remember the gen 2 has a completely revised 4.0 effectively Cup car engine over the older gen1 3.8. This really is a masterpiece of an engine so enough said. Also don't forget most gen 1s are approaching twice the age of gen 2s. The gen 2 engine also has far more induction noise across the whole of the rev range than the gen 1. The gen 1 has way more driveline shunt and flywheel clatter more reminiscant of the 997 GT3. Some like this but equally many don't. If you are serious about the gen 1 you are advised to research the engine situation be aware most pre May 2014 cars had an OPC engine swap so many first run cars from Autumn 2013 hung around outside OPCs over the winter and owners received a free new loaner Porsche and monthly compensation. Luckily my May 2014 car received a new engine on the production line and was eventually delivered in October 2014. Many gen 1s have had several new engines and there are many PH threads on this and also other forums detailing the differences and current warranty situation with Porsche. As ever your best bet is to drive both generations and see which you actually prefer. The PDK S gearbox in both gens is broadly similar and is a superb gearbox although I prefer the manual of which there are far fewer numbers for sale despite approximate parity on numbers when new.

POST 11Original post

I didn’t own but drove a few 991.1 and the .2 engine is significantly better I thought ,the .1 really feels like it has no torque on the road and I suppose if tracking it that won’t matter too much but outside of that if you can afford a .2 it’s a no brainer. I’m thinking of changing but after road testing a lot of different cars I can’t find anything that engages like the 991.2 gt3 and a significant part of that is the engine . Good luck whatever you decide .

Worth noting there are far fewer 991.1 GT3s with ceramics than 991.2 GT3s. That's strong money being asked for that one from Ashgood. If you can afford 1113k then stretching to 120k gets you a .2 which is a no brainer at that point. You'd lose out on CS, but will get a much better car and a lose less in depreciation as well

I’m thinking of changing but after road testing a lot of different cars I can’t find anything that engages like the 991.2 gt3 and a significant part of that is the engine . Good luck whatever you decide . The difference in torque is noticeable on certain roads if you leave it to the PDK as it likes to hold a higher gear. I also felt the suspension on the .2 was a bit more compliant as the .1 could be slightly harsh at times even in comfort. I drove my .1 and a .2 back-to-back at PEC as I was considering buying a .2. With a cost-to-change at the time of ~ £40-50k I kept the .1. If the cost to change is now closer to 25k then that could be about £200 per month difference if you put 50% deposit in.

That was the hardest part about selling, it was genuinely immaculate and wasn't a car that just sat in a garage. I might struggle to find another as clean but with a huge house project on the go and nowhere safe to leave it I thought it would make sense to sell and get into a .2 manual or .1RS once the house is done. Have you driven one with PCCB and one with steels out of interest? As mentioned there are far fewer .1 with PCCB and I would personally go with condition over what brakes a car has. The only real benefit of PCCB to me would have been no brake dust with PCCB.

Agree with white GT3 if I was looking for a 991.1 GT3 I wouldn't bother with ceramics. My 991.1 had steels and they were fine. Also bear in mind the cost of replacement following potential damage is quite eye watering around £5k per disc apparantly. The market changed with the gen 2 GT3 in that most buyers new and used demand(ed)ceramics as per the 991.1 GT3 RS possibly because the performance was on a par and obviously resale values of the gen 2 are quite a bit higher. Biggest advantage is less unsprung weight (and no corrosion if standing outside plus no brake dust residue) but for road use there is little benefit imo. Interesting that the 718 GT4 at a lower price point carries little value uplift with ceramics v steels and certainly not the huge option cost new over the steels which may well increasingly be the case as the cars age due to the higher maintenance.

Not quite, Ashgood sold a racing yellow example for £125k that was on 26,000 miles, previously owned by another forum member on here if I recall correctly, while this JZM one was on 23k miles, so it's far from the highest mileage one in the country. Of course majority of sales are in the £130-140k range and this is not talking down the market in away, I was only saying that occasionally some lower priced examples come up that might be closer enough in pricing to the .1 cars that make them a viable alternative if you are patient enough.

Last year’s plan was to purchase a 991.2 GT3 but due to an unfortunate setback that plan was postponed, since then I’ve looked at .1’s with new eyes and I’m seriously considering buying one. Essentials are clubsport and PCCB’s. If you can absorb the inevitable mental anguish that may arise as the 10 year warranty lapses then go for it. The price point of the .1GT3/RS is narrowing and having owned both i would plum for the .1RS. Not to everyone's taste with the rear picnic table etc but the "occasion of driving" never diminishes in the .1RS. For the additional £20-£40K you get a heap of extra car, my personal favourite are the 918 Buckets. Not to mention, 4 litre motor, 5 gram door pulls, CF bonnet, wings and so on.

Interesting you say that, for me its value rather than cost, a .2 is the price of a good M3 on top of a good .1 and is it worth that. Also I don't look at it from a monthly, I'd be buying outright.

I've been renovating a house to (still am, its a never ending story)... and building a garage but was determined right through the process to hold on to what I had and thankfully I did. I just looked you up on instagram, I see you're into cycling also, more than just cars in common.

My 2021 model GT4 was c £75k basic new and c £6k for ceramics being similar cost to the GT3 is imo ott proportionate to the GT4s cost and minimal benefit they give relative to performance and this is reflected in used market prices.. Bear in mind one replacement pccb alone is a stratospheric £5k plus fitting etc.

On the 10 year engine warranty, it's worth remembering that you can just continue to put a 991.1 under the normal Porsche extended warranty up to 15 years old, so until 2029/30 for most .1s. It's cheap at £1k per year, same as any other 991, and would cover a new engine if the valve train turns to cheese. Disadvantage is the need to maintain OPC servicing and parts, including Porsche branded batteries and N rated tyres, and no mods. My point is that there isn't a cliff edge to engine warranty cover next year, although there could increasingly be a premium associated with 991.1 GT3s that have a solid OPC history and comply with the warranty conditions (he says in the great PH self-serving tradition, owning precisely one of those cars!).

I could be wrong, but after extensive (internet!) research through how the 10 year warranty came about (mainly on Renlist) I believe it is along the lines of 'if the finger follower wear is at fault Porsche will replace the engine, up to 10 years or xx K miles from date of registration' So although you can extend the warranty as normal I am not sure that you would definitely get a new crate engine, perhaps a rebuild would be offered. Maybe down to individual cases I suspect. Like you I have a 2014 .1 and had a new engine fitted at the end of last year, the limp mode was not easy to activate and it took some attempts to get them to strip the engine to check, but once it was diagnosed a complete new G6 engine was at the dealer in a few days. (There's a method to get it to go into limp mode again, if anyone wishes to know). To the OP I had a .2 before the .1 and would buy the .2 over it for the improved suspension (I really notice it on a B road) and tech., but on a track I can't tell the difference and day to day again I can't really tell them apart. Oh and I don't have lift, drive everywhere including back roads in London and just live with the odd scrape on a £130 bit of plastic. Which ever you buy you'll love it I'm sure

To add from my experience I wouldn't rely on dealers coming back to you, keep an eye out yourself. Maybe the market has changed but when I purchased my 991.1 GT3 CS in November 2021 I had previously contacted 15+ dealers/specialists a few months prior, I had promises that I would be notified of anything for sale but to this day none have come back to me. I also wanted to purchase outright rather than finance and my budget limited me to the 991.1, had to be CS in white. I found CS cars were snapped up so had to be on it, comfort cars sat around for months. I ended up with a two owner 13.5k mile example albeit with steel brakes and no extended leather, which doesn't bother me. I also had the dreaded engine replacement last year but the whole process was effortless with my OPC and I now have a car with a new 'proven' engine which feels like it pulls stronger than before. Good luck hunting.

As I said in the first post I was planning to purchase a GT3 early 22, but in March last year I'd a big set back, I lost the price of a GT3 in a robbery and just shelved the idea at the time. Anyway in 2020/21 when I was lurking round the classifieds I was completely focused on .2's and didn't look sideways at a .1, but later part of last year I started to look at .1's, watching some youtube videos, spoke to a couple of past owners and then there was a Chris Harris PodCast recently that started swaying me more towards a .1 over a .2. It value rather than affordability, the price deficit between a .1 and .2 is the price of a good M3 and I don't know if I'd personally get an advantage from that. My plan is long term keeper, Spa/Ring trips, NC500, first and maybe only mod would be to change suspension, the place who fitted the suspension to my CSL showed me suspension they'd fitted to a 997GT2 from Greece, it would be complete over kill for me but it felt good.

I plan to change the suspension regardless if its a .1 or a .2, and tech isn't that important to me, only thing I wish my E92 M3 had is DAB radio, plus I've a CSL and the tech in it is completely basic and I don't wish for more in it... then on the other end of that scale our iX3 has to much tech, so happy with less. I've posted this before, but basically I couldn't really afford the .2, so was always watching the market values, worrying about mileage. at £30k cheaper I can afford the .1 so I just enjoy it as and when it suits, fair weather or foul. You're coming at it from a value aspect rather than affordability, but perhaps the outcome is the same. Before suspension change I'd recommend String theory set it up with standard for how you like a car to behave.

The invoice from the OPC is evidence along with the new sticker for the service book and engine bay. The centre that did the change also let me into the workshop to photgraph the old engine, wear on the cams etc and the car with the engine removed. Then when the new engine arrived I visited and took a load more pics. I had to send the V5 to DVLA though, initially the OPC said Porsche would do this, but never heard from them.
