POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The check oil light went off on my 02 996 last night. It has 4200 miles. What weight Mobil 1 synthetic should I use?

POST 2Original post

Your owner's manual gives you all the specs on what weight to use.

POST 4Original post

I know this might sound silly, when do we have to change mobil-1 oil? i mean do we keep on adding and adding for ever?! waz

POST 5Original post

PCNA says change every 15k, i do my at 6000 just for my own sanity. in between oil changes, you just top off. on my C2, i added about 8 qt in 13000 miles. in my C4S i added 3 qt before RMS leaked. after taht, i added lots of oil until it's fixed.

POST 6Original post

I bought mine used 2 years old from a dealer - it had 8000 miles. After putting 2000 more miles on it, I needed to add a full quart. I guess this is on par with most other people.

POST 9Original post

Hmmm. Technically, synthetic oil should not be affected by heat so I am intrigued by the change frequency in Dubai (I have been there - and yes it is hot - in the summer!). The main reason synthetic was invented in the 1950s was for jet engines. Seems the longer molecules of organic oil would break down from heat so synthetic was devised with shorter and MUCH more stable molecules for this very reason. So it was for heat survivability, not low friction that was the primary goal for it's beginnings. Slippery is a secondary benefit. I doubt your engine gets as hot or demanding as a jet engine - maybe a turbo under constant boost could get close. The Porsche recommended change frequency here in Canada is 24,000 km and technically the cold weather is harder on engines and their oil than the hot (due to the creation of condensation and moisture in the crankcase and sump). Now hard or sustained high speed driving WOULD be cause for a more frequent change so if that is why, so be it.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The owners manual says for ambient temp >50 use 10w40/15w40/15w50, and for temp <50 use 10w40/10w30/5w30. I've seen several posts recommending 0w40. Is zero weight good for New England driving?

POST 11Original post

Porsche approved oils as of Feburary 2003

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Loren - is that from the 03 owner's manual?

POST 13Original post

No, it is from the TSB "Engine Oils Approved by Porsche" dated February 28, 2003. This is for all models and all years of 996's. There are separate (but similar) TSBs for Boxster and TT/GT2, and even the new GT3.

POST 14Original post

I'm confused now!!!! Loren's post is a lot different than the owner's manual recommendations, which dream4 quoted. I figure the 0W40 is good for break in since tolerances are tight and it might allow a little "extra" friction to let things set in. But 0W40 is not only completely absent from the owner's manual, but try finding it in a store! I just went out last night and bought every quart of 15W50 I could find including Wal-Mart, Aid auto stores, AutoZone etc. And that seams to be a lot more popular than 0W40. Anybody know the real deal?

POST 15Original post

There is nothing wrong with 15W50 (Mobil 1). Porsche recommended that up until about a year ago. My car (as I am sure many cars) are still running 15W50. For whatever reason Porsche has issued a Technical Service Bulletin that states (to dealers) that they are to use one of the approved oils (primarily 0W40). I just bought 3 cases of 0W40 from Autozone and my next oil change I will convert to 0W40 (Mobil 1). This is just like tires... as they see improvements (or problems) they change their recommendation. Again, nothing wrong with the 15W50 I would go ahead and use it (as long as you live in a warm climate).

POST 16Original post

Loren, I understand your logic just don't know why they wouldn't update the '03 owner's manual. Anyway I live in N.Y. but since the summer's coming I figured 15/W50 would be ok. Did you have to order the 0W/40 to get 3 cases? How much and how long if you had order?

POST 17Original post

My guess is the MY03 manuals were printed over a year ago. They are now preparing the MY04 parts and documentation for the factory switch-over. I did not have to order the 3 cases I bought (but I did take all but 1 quart of what they had on hand). They said that if were out it usually took 1-3 days to get more (providing they could get it from another store in the area). I paid a case price of $29.95 which comes out to about $4.99 per quart.

POST 18Original post

I'll ask my local AutoZone. So you think 0W/40 is acceptable for summertime?

POST 19Original post

quote:
So you think 0W/40 is acceptable for summertime?

Yup. More from the TSB ( I sent it to you via email)... "Beginning January 24th, 2001, all Porsche vehicle are now factory filled with OW-40 Mobil 1 engine oil. The engine oils listed in this Technical Information are approved for the 911 Carrera (996) / 911 Carrera 4 (996) vehicles. They can also be used for all 4, 6 and 8 cylinder Porsche engines from model 1973 onwards. If none of the engine oils approved by Porsche are available, other engine oils of the viscosity OW-40, 5W-40 and 5W 50 can be used if they comply with the ACEA A3 specification."

POST 22Original post

adding 8 qts in 130000 miles...etc? why are porsches burning so much oil?

POST 23Original post

I have been running the Castrol Syntec 5w/50 becuase it is readily available at Walmart for almost a dollar cheaper per quart than the harder to find 0w/40 Mobil 1. What about Amsoil? Any issues using that instead of Mobil1 or Castrol Syntec?

POST 24Original post

Does anybody have any thoughts/experience with any "off-brand" synthetics such as Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil etc.?

POST 25Original post

I have a preference for Amsoil and used it successfully in my 928 and 993 but not yet in my 996 as i am uncertain which to use. Amsoil is a bit more expensive but I trust it more so that Mobil1, I would rather not say why but I am confident the product is excellent and superior to Mobil1.

POST 26Original post

My mechanic builds CART and other hi-rev racing engines and is a multiple podium winner at Sebring...he will only use Royal Purple in his cars...from experience he can prove its superiority under high stress conditions. Now, how many of you agree that Porsche recommends Mobil1 because of the millions of sponsorship dollars Mobil gives to Porsche? I've used Castrol ONLY for 23 years and my 362,000 mile original engine substantiates my continued use of it in my soon to be delivered C4S over Mobil1.

POST 27Original post

P-Zen good point. The only thing I worry about is if you have a warranty issue and they try to deny you because you "didn't use an approved oil". I know that in court if you used a similar spec oil you're probably right, but who wants to go to court anyway... . I just find it difficult for anybody to justify the higher prices (Redline almost 2X Mobil 1) and probably very slim differences if any, instead of just going with Mobil 1 and having a free mind. Sidenote: As a former manufacturer rep (not Porsche) I have seen the factory deny a warranty claim because of a non-oem oil filter failure. I can't remember the exact circumstances but it scared me enough.

POST 28Original post

POST 29Original post

as noone bothered to answer about my shock at the engines burning so much oil, I'll ask again...what's up with this? that engine is supposed to cost more than most cars and to such incredible performance, specs, etc. "hand built" my Porsche brochure said... in 23 years of driving i've never had an engine burn a fraction of this much after 100,000 miles.

POST 30Original post

Turbos use a different engine than your C4S and use up to one qt per 1000 miles as normal spec.

POST 31Original post

I thought the Castrol was not true synthetic oil. I remember reading a thread wherein it stated that the Castrol was derived from a different process than Mobil 1, for example. Am I off base here? Thanks, Mike

POST 32Original post

quote:
Originally posted by MKW: Turbos use a different engine than your C4S and use up to one qt per 1000 miles as normal spec.

MKW, different engine? Different by how much? Besides, my reply about the excessive oil usage was a result of a fellow C4S owner talking about how much his car uses. For the first time in my life I've found a world (Porsche world) where lower quality is acceptable and expected at a much higher price. So far I've been amazed at how many people on this forum tell me that "it's not a car for you then," when I rant about quality control. Like, when they can't give a reasonable explanation, they turn to focus on "if you can't afford it, buy a Honda S2000." Since when does nostalgia replace quality control? How many people are still having RMS leaks? I think I've been hearing that problem for almost 30 years. Ok, sorry for the soapbox. But I just go my Panorama and everyone single person reviewing their experiences with their C4S had complaints and very low mileage cars...way too many of them. Can't we picket the Porsche corporate headquarters or something? Ciao

POST 33Original post

So I went to my local speedshop to order some 0W/40 Mobil 1. While I was there the other Mobil 1 oils were priced about 4 or 5 bucks per quart. Well when my OW/40 came in he charged me $7.99 per quart!!! I think I got ripped off!? Someone earlier in this thread said they ordered their 0W/40 from their local AutoZone and paid $4.99 a quart or $29.95 per case. What are some other people paying for 0W/40 and from where???
