Suggestion

My daily use driving is 99% in rush hour traffic and on the freeway, and you just can't make that "fun." Rush hour and freeway snarls are definitely better with an auto, but for gosh sakes why would anyone use a Porsche in that situation?

is a 7 speed and the lower gears are spaced closer together so off the line it makes really good use of the available torque of the engine.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello I am in the market to a Cayman S and have found a few that I want to go see. But the only auto is a 3 hour drive. All of them are 2007 and 2008s. I am not going to race or track the car but I like the feel and control of the manual. I also like the auto in the wife Mercedes that has the manual shift feature so I am not totally against the idea. I have driven a RX-8 that was an auto and it really made the car slow of the line. So anyone with the auto or has driven the auto please let me know if it is worth the drive. Thanks

POST 2Original post

If you are considering an automatic transmission, I would suggest you also look at 2009 models that have the PDK dual-clutch transmission in addition to the 2007/2008s with the standard Tiptronic. The PDK has many benefits over the Tip, including less powertrain loss, extremely fast shifts, and better fuel efficiency. With regards to performance, the PDK has been shown to be faster than the manual transmission equivalent in most tests, and you can drive it in either automatic mode or manually shift gears yourself as you desire.

POST 3Original post

My car is a manual and it definitely is fun to drive on the open road. Driving an auto saps the fun of driving so much so that I personally prefer my base model with manual over an S with automatic. However, it depends on your use of the car. My daily use driving is 99% in rush hour traffic and on the freeway, and you just can't make that "fun." Rush hour and freeway snarls are definitely better with an auto, but for gosh sakes why would anyone use a Porsche in that situation? If that's your primary use, you might as well drive a Honda Accord. That's why I have a Scion tC with auto for the mandatory morning traffic hassles and save the Cayman for weekend fun. In fact, I'd feel bad subjecting the Cayman to my daily commute. Obviously your situation might be entirely different.

POST 4Original post

I would love the 2009 plus but I have not found any in my price range so far. But thanks for your input.

POST 5Original post

I have a truck and the wife also has a car so it will be an extra car and we can pick when we would like to drive it. We have kids so most of the time it would be just to small. Also how well do the autos hold up to the S motor? Any problems compaired to the 6-speed?

POST 6Original post

The situation is not as black-and-white as you make it out to be. My previous car was a 2006 CS w/ 6MT before I bought my 2009 w/ PDK , and I live in the greater Los Angeles area. I certainly didn't buy a Porsche just to druve on the 405 in rush hour traffic on purpose, but there are times when I have to, and there is no reason why you couldn't. A Porsche owner does not absolutely need to buy/have a second car just to commute in heavy traffic. I have just as much fun in my PDK as I had in my 6MT in all situations, and I don't plan on buying a MT car ever again unless there is a real compelling reason to do so.

POST 7Original post

I think you have answered your own question. You like the feel and control of the manual. Go for it! It's a great gearbox.

POST 8Original post

I live in DFW and hate operating a standard in traffic. I am sorry you have not found a 2009 in your price range, because the PDK (with sport chrono) and paddle shifters IMHO is the absolute best of both worlds! Auto controls everything very nicely and allows you to eat jelly donuts in your car (which I personally do not recommend). Performance-wise the PDK car is faster than the manual. Placing the PDK in manual and paddle shifting gives absolute control of the gears. As far as whether that is more fun than a clutch and a stick shift...totally an individual choice. My advice...go with the standard now or save up for a 2009 PDK . Happy hunting!

POST 9Original post

I have a brand new '11 CS with MT and it's sooo much fun to drive, downshifts, upshift, etc... at the right time and the right way is 1/2 of the fun - for me

POST 10Original post

One other point worth bringing up is that the base 987.2 Cayman with PDK might be a good option as well considering how well the gearing of the PDK works with the 2.9l engine.

POST 11Original post

How is it compared to the 6 speed in the first generation? I have not seen any numbers for the base with the PDK

POST 12Original post

My current Cayman is an 08 S Sport model (special edition 1st generation with 303hp ) and the base Cayman with PDK that I drove at a Porsche Driving event a month ago felt as fast as my current car. (the demo car that I drove did not even have the Sports Chrono, so with Sports Chrono and Sport Chrono Plus it is probably faster) PDK is a 7 speed and the lower gears are spaced closer together so off the line it makes really good use of the available torque of the engine. The 7th gear is also taller giving you better highway MPG. Per the Porsche spec for the 2011, should be the same for the 2009: Top Track Speed 163 mph 5.4 sec ( PDK )/ 5.2 sec ( PDK with Sport Plus) Technical Specs - Cayman - All Cayman Models - Dr. Ing. h.c. POST 13Original post

Just found a 2009 S with PDK and Sport Chrono Pkg W/Out PCM. I am a little confused on the Sport Chrono Pkg W/Out PCM what exactly is it? Sorry for all the questions. It is more than I wanted to spend but I can swing it. Also tan is not my first pick for the inside but I could live with it. Oh yeh thanks for the response and help.

POST 14Original post

They're similar. Sport Chrono without PCM means you get the increased throttle response, sport and sport plus buttons, launch control, and the clock on the dash. Having PCM not only gives you a little more information such as lap times, etc., but you also get built in satellite navigation. Incidentally, many of these answers to your questions can be found here with a search, or by checking the FAQ first.
