I can't agree more about ABSOLUTELY stepping away from the situation for a week or so and let things simmer -- and definitely recommend avoiding making an emotional decision.

PS This is how messed up my knowing I lost my dad was on my decision making, his friend offered me a heated space in his repair center and assistance with repair.

You would have options to ship it to many places for repair, drop it off locally or use it as a core and buy a replacement engine.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Perhaps, at least close, my guess is it would be attractive to someone who can repair or replace the engine either to keep or flip, the current market and the time of year is in your favor .
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
I'm just crushed. I have a
2006 Cayman s
with around 120k miles that for the past 3 years had the tell signs of bore scoring. On Saturday my check engine light came on blinking a few blocks away from my condo and sounds like a tractor. I bought it used from a shady dealer I guess and still owe around $5,800 on my loan. LMN Motor Sports here in Virginia Beach quoted me around 12 to 15K to restore the engine with better sleeves and pistons to get this car right and last a very long time. I just do not have the money and will probably need to sell her
She still drives just sounds like a tractor. The car is amazing and I just put
Numeric shifter
cables put in ($1000) so I don't have to worry about the crap Porsche cables to snap for a 3rd time. Has a white bumper, because a skate boarder cracked the black one that was on her. I found this one in CA and put it on and then had the stripe added to make it look good.
The
Continental tires
are around 3 years old. New back breaks and I also have the new front breaks when needed.
No accidents and never tracked.
The interior is in great shape (black leather). Headliner sags, but fixed it with 3 pins lol. The cupholder does not close all the way, but that's like every 987.1 lol.
I also have the part to fix the loose drivers side handle. Just have not had time to fix it. Still works and probably why I did not touch it. Love this car and just cannot figure out how to keep her.
Reaching out to you all to help me figure out what to do. How much should I ask for if I sell her? Just lost right now. Bought this car at a rough time in life and it made me so happy to just drive.....
Thank you for just reading...
Wish I had better news but my 986 motor died at 38K and I took a BATH on it with new
Michelins
and a ton of money in it. Frankly I thought I'd never buy another Porsche and to this day these stories haunt me, I have to say though after 100K these stories surprise me less. I don't know how my 986 was driven before I got it, my
spyder
had 3K on it, don't know about it either except the dealer owner drove it. I hope to sell it one day under 30K because like you I'm not flush with coin. I broke a tooth today at lunch on a reported to be hand breaded boneless chicken strip and funding that repair cancels all planned summer trips. Dammit !
PS If you have the space and a daily driver don't do anything till you are more calm. I should have never sold the 986 but it was like a week after my dad's stroke and I wasn't thinking right. Make an unemotional decision, not an impulse one like I mistakenly did.
Thank you for sharing your story with me. Sorry for your pain also. I totally was going to hold onto her at least until November when the inspection is due and aholes here in my condo community get vehicles towed if everything is not up to date. %*&%#@$ but that's another story. When it rains it pours. My 2nd vehicle a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavour died today on my lunch break from work lol (pictured in the first Porsche pic on the right with all the surfing stickers) Anyone else feel like life just shits on you sometimes? So now my neighbor is letting me use one of his trucks until I can either fix it or buy something else. UGH!!!! Just been drinking beer at this point. Just lost....................
Can I at least get what I owe on my loan? She still rolls just tractor like sound lol
I’m sorry to hear that. I would imagine that you could sell it for what you owe on it but if it were me I would rent a storage building to keep it in until I had the money to fix it if you like the car that much. Also instead of repairing the engine in it I would upgrade it to a 3.8.

I don't think you can hang your sales pitch on "it still runs". Will someone pay you the balance of the loan for it? Perhaps, at least close, my guess is it would be attractive to someone who can repair or replace the engine either to keep or flip, the current market and the time of year is in your favor . Life is "lifey" for everyone, I'm not 12, there was no bowling birthday party tomorrow but I would have never guessed I'd spend it in a dentist chair over a boneless chicken strip.
Like Chris said, you love it and replacement would be a lot so maybe keep it. I'd try for a private spot to keep it so you don't get fleeced during the waiting period, you never know who has garage space and a kind heart who will cut you some slack in rent, good luck.
PS This is how messed up my knowing I lost my dad was on my decision making, his friend offered me a heated space in his repair center and assistance with repair. I was too intimidated to pull it and more importantly between jobs. I have a four car garage to this day where it was. I could have afforded to drop a new engine in it soon after had I just stuffed it in my garage for free. My dad was my best friend, unfortunately his illness became my illness.
Was thinking about that also. Just can't seem to part with something that was there for me in a very low part of my life (Not of my doing) I feel like I should not let her down. Amazing how cars and pets can just make things right again....
I will think about things and try and figure this out. So sorry to hear about your Dad brother. Will look into finding a friends garage or renting a storage unit. Just started a new job Dec 20th after 19 years working at a great company and losing it due to the covid situation. I would not have had to worry to fixing her with that job, but make so much less now. Just can not throw that much money to fix her which sucks....Driving her is my coffee. Kids these days have no idea what driving an amazing sports car with a manual feels like.
Just one more thought: If you found it a temporary home, hired the proper assistance and pulled the engine out. You would have options to ship it to many places for repair, drop it off locally or use it as a core and buy a replacement engine. That endeavor should save a lot of money assuming you could do the same in reverse and reinstall it. Sorry you lost the "big time" gig that happened to me too, after 17 years. I took it personally, but the company crashed and burned so it had zip to do with me.
Boris to make you laugh a bit here is the pic my surfer/skater/soccer daughter sent me after her skateboard fall lol
No helmet!!!!!! Learned her lesson the hard way.
Really sorry to hear this! Every funky noise I hear on the track or on the road, my heart sinks for my beloved CS!
I am confident you could get $5800 for it in this state but you also have to ask if this is really the catastrophic failure you think it is. One of my track mates had what sounded like the same thing and was sure he grenaded the engine, fortunately, it was something like the vacuum pump. It was still pricey to fix, but not the re-build cost!
The other side of the coin though is you state it has bore scoring. If that was actually verified w a borescope, you were going to have to re-build this anyway and the car is just keeping you honest. Sometimes you have to make an unemotional decision so later down the road, you can make an emotional one again.
I am with others on when to decide . . .if you can afford to store it somewhere for 90 days or so, you can decide then. That will also afford you the luxury of not being backed into a corner with the many potential buyers out there wanting to take advantage of the situation (HOA included).
Again, really sorry life is throwing you curveballs!
Thank you for the reply. So much to think about. So dam stressed out now. Just going to leave the car out of my thoughts for a few days and work on fixing my truck, so I have something to drive
This may be a blessing in disguise. I'd agree with storing the car for a future project. There are a few YouTube videos of swapping in a LS motor or a K series Honda motor. Which may be cheaper than the price quoted.
Here is one
Thanks for the reply
I thought about this also and why I am sure if I can not come up with the funds then someone would buy it from me to do this very thing. Thanks
My gosh. Sorry to hear about the car,
@Happiour
...and the tooth as well,
@Boristhespyder
-- UGH!
Yes, I know what you mean about "when it rains, it pours." I can totally empathize.
I can't agree more about ABSOLUTELY stepping away from the situation for a week or so and let things simmer -- and definitely recommend avoiding making an emotional decision.
My immediate thought is likely to sell the car and unfortunately take the loss, unless you have some sort of a free storage solution. If at some point you wind up getting flush again, there are still plenty of sorted 987s out there for sale -- and you can buy one when you're ready. FWIW, although our 987s are expensive and fun, the consensus appears to be that 987.1 cars aren't (currently) terribly scarce, rare, or collectible. This means that when you're ready, the right replacement would be out there and waiting for you.
I can relate to what you're going through per letting "things" go -- I'm going through the same exact problem right now per storage, etc. and having to just take major losses on all sorts of my favorite things because I don't have a place to keep items. I have also had vehicles that required more time and money I needed to repair, so it was time to let them go. It took me a good 7 years to emotionally let go of my beloved '68 VW convertible, but it was time. Meanwhile, the cold hard math shows me that I'd be eaten alive by storage fees.
Anyhow, I'm totally cheering you on here. There's no wrong answer here -- it's more of a question of your finances and what works for your wallet. Most objects can be replaced...but people and our lives cannot. Hang in there!
Thanks, very well said. I am looking further ahead like to next year when I will be buying a new house and just like you said we pour in so much money into our vehicles that we forget to live. Still going to think about things, but I can't let the love of this car break the bank. I have had many years of fun, but it's been expensive lol. Think I have had pretty much everything that goes wrong with the 987.1 either fixed my a garage or myself. LOL
Would like to see it go to someone that can get it back to the amazing car it is. SUNFDY! Car....
Perhaps I missed it. But other than a mention of a CEL and sounds like a tractor there was no mention of other symptoms pointing to bore scoring. I am no expert. But I would imagine a CEL and 'tractor ' sound could be caused by numerous ailments aside from bore scoring.
If your credit is good, you could refinance the car and pull cash out to cover the cost of the repairs. This will come down to what your bank/credit union values your car at and how much they are willing to let you pull.
Hi
It is also is consuming oil. So I have to keep an eye on it and add oil. White smoke here and there. Drives like nothing is wrong up until when I started this post. The CEL light came on blinking and I stopped driving it. It could be other things. I know that I also need catalytic converters. guessing those might be bad, because of all the oil consumption. The place I take it to works on Porsches and even race them. They are pretty sure it's bore scoring, but won't know until the engine is apart.
Could be a bad Air Oil Separator, but that would usually smoke all the time. I've gone through 2. I would take it to your local Porsche mech and have them diagnose it.
